THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! ...for posting this..I was 10 yrs. old, and my father and me drove from Atlantic City...without tickets THIS night......it was sold out when we got there, but thank god for the guys leaving the parking lot that didn't want their tickets...lol!!!.....
I WAS TEN YEARS OLD, I SAT UP IN THE RAFTERS OF THE SPECTRUM.....I JUST WANTED TO SEE HULK HOGAN.....to be cont:
Hogan at his peak sold out the largest venues like the Garden and the Spectrum as if they were high school gyms and fan reaction? Shit everybody from little kids to senior citizens were rabid Hulkamaniacs responsible for the immeasurable pops the Immortal One received upon his entrance into the arena, during his match, after the match, on the way to his limo, on the highway to the airport and on his flight to the next city! No professional wrestler has EVER come close to his popularity, brother!
If you look closely on Hogan's initial entrance backstage, you will see Vince McMahon directly behind him in a jersey with that same "flowed back" hair atyle...lol!!
@BrianMilligan1 That was REAL wrestling! Despite that pro-wrestling is still is all fake, but I mean, back in mid-to-late 80s, that was some real wrestling. Not the crap you see today.
@tornadotp Listen to the voice between 1:22 and 1:29. That is definitely McMahon. Most house shows that were broadcasted (MSG, Boston, Toronto, Spectrum) used a three-man commentary team. Graham's voice is similar to McMahon's, but when you specifically listen to the part about taking us to ringside, it is McMahon. That was typical back then. Gorilla and another commentator would do the match, and McMahon would basically be the third banana and the one to tidy up the loose ends.
I used to like it when they would show the wrestlers, especially Hogan come out from the back on their way to the ring. You'd see it at the MSG and Spectrum shows.
Yes. This match was about 2 months after Wrestlemani 2. After they put together the big PPV, they had a bunch of return matches at their normal monthly venues like Boston Garden, Philly Spectrum, and Madison Square Garden.
I sure remember that match when they used Johnny Valiant's cigar to blind Barry Windham. A lot of great matches and memories for me growing up watching those monthly Spectrum cards.
The best part is the one-hour time limit...like these two could work for an hour. At least ring announcer Mel Philips didn't molest any ringboys during the match...um, that we know of.
I am sure Mel was scanning the crowd thinking "Mmm... looking at all these teenage boys!" Speaking of time limits, I miss the days when the opening bout would be between to mid-carders with a 10 minute time limit and it would end in a draw and the babyface would be getting the crowd to chant "5 More Minutes" like the crowd really wanted to see two jobbers waste 5 more minutes of the show before the good bouts start!
It's gonna be a very sad day. I grew up with the Spectrum and the Vet but I wan't too upset to see The Vet go. But The Spectrum! Man, that place has a lot of great history there. Monthly wrestling cards, big fight boxing matches, Flyers hockey, Sixers baseketball and let's not forget Rocky Balboa vs Apollo Creed 1 & 2!!!!
Hulk Hogan is the greatest wrestler of all time(sorry Ric Flair fans)He changed the landscape of the WWF/E more than any other superstar from any generation.
@MonkeyKingSonGoku Miley Cyrus is really popular too---Hogan is Miley Cyrus for wrestling talent. He made a lot of money in the 1980s though, I'll give him that.
King Kong Bundy could work the mic...I never really paid any attention to him because he was on the downturn when I was getting into it. I'm glad I found this - the "Miss America" thing was shit, though.
Miss America was absolutely terrible here. The first thing she asked was who they were fighting. But her being so bad is what makes this interview even better, for me at least! They had an interview later when she was out with Paul Orndorff and once again she was horrible!
Hahaha...it was their attempt in the 80s to connect wrestling to main stream entertainment. My favorite moment in this was when Bundy said, "DON'T INTERRRRUPT ME CAL!!!!"
They were actually beating on each other outside the ring, I guess the fake punches weren't really a mainstay yet.

Was that Vince McMahon (now the current CEO of the WWE) announcing?
tyrese3745 1 year ago
@tyrese3745
That was Gorilla Monsoon and Dick Graham. They used to be the regular announce team at the monthly cards in Philadelphia.

I attended Spectrum shows until '91 sometime. The last two times were headlined by Flair vs. Hogan. Both were DQ wins because Mr. Perfect interfered.
