This training was done over three years ago. Tactics change and evolve as time goes on. It may not even be taught like this anymore. This scenario is never ideal, but the approach has to be made somehow. This was just one way of showing us how to do it. There's many other ways to clear a vehicle. They teach different ways of doing it and you can, in a sense, "pick and choose" to add to your bag of tactics.
after all the training i have had i would say this is the worst way i have ever seen to do a felony stop using the vehicle for cover when approaching in my opinion a terrible place for the driver because they r left exposed with out a weapon up of forced to leave partner also clearing the interior from the front is asking for friendly fire because both officers that may still be watching the rear would cover those clearing the vehicle and vise versa
Probably not the best option because now, the driver of the squad is stuck if things go south......The only way he can really get out of the situation is to run his partner over, Always wait for a cover car ESPECIALLY on a FELONY stop...... Don't end up part of that Thin Blue Line Guys....... Y'all be safe out here as we do our duties!
I agree with rdlal8. Why not approach the car stepping out wide out of mirror range. The door was already open. That would give you a visible shot if needed and keep your driver out of harms way.
High risk stop. rdlal8, got to make your approach some how. when you dont have all the back up to do the right way, got to martha stewart the situation. the car poses as protection. also the driver should have gun drawn too. i was an officer for salisbury md. 9th dangerous city in america. 2 years there and had 5,000 cfs. time to go to smaller pd lol
it seems kind of dangerous pulling up parallel to a suspect vehicle were someone could open fire on the driver of the patrol car, why not just come up from the rear and have a shotgun as your point man?
