@85wifebeater No, it did not come this sharp. It did fine in stock form but man, stripping off that coating and changing the bevel really improved it's bite. I did end up doing some file work on the handle so it fit better in my hand and that too, improved it's chopping ability as I was able to use it a bit better. In fact, I'm actually thinking of putting it up for sale now as I just don't use it anymore.
@RoushafiedCobra Hey, do you mind telling me how you stripped off the coat? Did you use a belt grinder? or just sandpaper? (all I have is sandpaper..so its not like I have lots of options )...and the bevel did you convex it? Or just took down the angle of the bevel?
@85wifebeater: Wow, man I really really appreciate that comment! You know I make alot of my purchases based on videos here too and although it's not really a "review" whereas I talk about it and show it up close etc. I'm glad it still gave you enough to help make a decision \m/
got the rtak 2 knife a couple of weeks ago and boy does it do its job i live in texas and theres so much brush where you from and what does the term convexed mean? i see all the texture is stripped off thanks for the video you goot a good lil camera man there haha
@curtisskeete Yeah man, I think it was just the combination of the smooth finish and the convex. Like you, I decided to make my own as well and with the help of some guys over at Bladeforums I've been able to bring 3 to life; 2 camps and a chopper. I used CPM-3V for my main camp knife, A2 for my secondary one and 5160 for my chopper. With the exception on the 3v the others were cheap in cost and easy to acquire for my sizes; both in material and HT'ing. Congrats on your project!
coming soon is the New bushmaster battle mistress Busse check out pics i know your gonna want one too o that fnis3 comment was me forgot to sign in on fathers pc
i had to go to ebay. The sellers store was Iron City Blades ,and ive used him a couple of times ,very reliable. Got the knife within a week. I went with all leather no horn at all or wood.Check it out if you get a chance it will not dissapoint.
Oh yeah, I'm very familiar with them as well!! Awesome awesome knife, a "Hogs" dream lol. I was in the market for a chunk of INFI before my Fehrman but as you know Jerry releases what he wants when he wants, so it was hard to get the model I was after. All the ones on the bladeforums were already gone to senior members who wanted them and most on eBay were the same posted on the forums. Someday I'll grab 1 and maybe a mojo too if I'm lucky.
Man do you have a link? I ran a quick search and although it showed up in google, Bladeforums lacks the "search" feature for my status and there's no telling where that thread is haha. If ya got it just shoot it my way on my page that was the link shows up. Yeah I beat the crap outta that rtak, however I always polish/sharpen it up after every session lol. Thanks for telling me that man, let me know if you got the link :)
hey i meant to mention i picked up a great blade today a marbles trailmaker i grabbed it caus they filed for bankruptcy last week man its pretty impressive wont stand up to the same torture an rtak will but pretty to look at classic americana
Nice! Did you get the stag or leather? Looks like it's made of 5160 (leaf spring steel) which would be tougher than the 1095 of the RTAK, more resistant to rust when compared to 1095 and wont pit when it does as 1095 can/does. Doesn't hold and edge as well but makes a great chopper!! I do like that classic look and am interested in the knife but it seems their sold out in my places of buying :S I saw the thread too :o looks like the rtak ! Did you see HornDogs SR M9!! gotta get one haha
Btw, congrats on the new knife, since I couldnt find it, let me know if where you ordered yours still has any in stock -and where you got it from, if you dont mind :)
Shoot man I'm sorry I didn't respond brotha, I didn't even see this post o.0 Sorry about that. It's been a while since I had some fun with this knife so I'll take it out in the next day or 2 and fulfill that request man :)
Yeah man that BK9 is nice! I was contemplating on that before my RTAK, in fact it was between those and the Spyderco Forester. I have the Forester now but need to get the Becker. Problem was when I was looking to get the Becker they had went out of business and I couldn't find one, but now it appears their back up. For what their for, both knives fit the bill. In fact, other than edge retention it's not very far off from my Fehrman Extreme Judgment for brush work.
Really!? Hmm, I'm kind of mixed about that. I know they love the 1095 which is a great steel for choppers in that budget. I just hope they have a good person like P.Bos to heat treat them. I also hope their handles hold up too. I'm sure they will be made with the same specs though. Honestly I'd rather even have seen Cold Steel take them over as they HT their 1095 very well and IMO have a little better performing knives overall. It's all good though :) Thanks for the info!!
hey RC. love this vid. i find my bk9 1095 blade gets dulled rather quickly. is that your experience with your rtak also? so your fehrman keeps an edge after chipping marble, huh? i gotta get a fehrman or a busse one of these days. i'd love a hogfsh or a regular fsh.
Marble? Never hacked away at that lol. I'll leave that to Noss :p Man that RTAK's 1095 does an awesome awesome job of holding its edge. Granted my edge is convexed but even before at 30-35deg it really did well. It seemed to dull to a certain point, then stayed at that throughout my chopping sprees. As far as how much it dulled, well it wouldn't shave but it would slice paper w/o binding. No push cut though. Can cut up meat/carpet very well still though. W/the rtak it hold very well imo.
Im glad you dig this video man! That makes me feel good you all get something from this in one way or another. As for the Fehrman, get it, period. It's 1 of the best you can own and retains its value, just as Busse does. I love Busse knives and know what they can do, but at the same time, Fehrman can do the same for less money. Their both at the top if the food chain. CPM 3V is awesome steel as is INFI -neither is better imo & those who have seen them compared first hand.
dude, it'd be completely awesome if you could throw a few vids up of you doing some chopping/batoning with your spydie forester. that's one wicked looking blade, but vids with them in action are scant. please, please post some brotha!
Man the Spydie is a nice blade dude. Its easily my favorite blade design out of my choppers. Looks like a big ass scalpel haha. Much better ergo's than all but my Fehrman -in which it ties. Performs comparably to the RTAK in almost all chopping tasks (minus batoning extremely thick logs -wedges a bit)
Yeah I think I only saw one before I bought mine. You know I really need to get some chopping vids up. Ive been talking big about it but then not following though -knives took the back burner
...as I got back into other hobbies. I always go through them in cycles haha. To be honest with you, I can say I will post some as X-Mas nears since I cut my own tree's. That'll give me some wood and an excuse to bust out the choppers again. I'll even have the Fehrman as Ive been wanting to make one of this amazing knife.
Hey thanks alot Eso. You know man, when I first started out I basically did a bit of research on what it looked like, found a few videos here that showed the use of a mouse pad then tried it out. A mouse pas allow some give when your sharpen versus a hard surface. It tends to "round" the shoulder of the knife your sharpening which is a convex grind. It gets a bit more technical than that technique wise but you learn that as you go. Grab a mouse pad, slap some 800 grit on it and try it out.
Also if you get some time, head over to bladeforums and check out the techniques. You can also search for convex sharpening here and get a basic idea of it. Good luck brother! Let me know if you got anymore questions dude.
Just want to tell you all "Thanks" for the comments and kind ratings! If you'd like to see me hack a different medium (material) let me know and I'll give it a go :)
I used the old mouse pad and sandpaper method at first, now I use my 1 1/2" belt sander and can convex it this way too -but I always touch it up with the mouse pad afterwards. If your interested in learning how to convex a blade let me know & I'll point you in the right direction. Yes you can convex just about any knife and as far as the Busse, it doesn't compare haha. The FFBM is a bad mofo, alot heavier and INFI holds an edge a bit better.
Just removed the coating and convexed the edge ;) It's an awesome knife for the price. With the convex it really holds it's edge very well. If you guy's are looking for a chopper, it's definatley a must, cheap and performs well as you can see.
Thanks man, yeah i love this knife, especially after I stripped that coating off of it. I loved the look of the coating as well but man, it cuts so much better now and the satin is really growing on me. I find I use this more than my Fehrman Extreme Judgment. It an awesome purchase, you'll be glad you got it. Another one that gets over looked is the Kershaw Outcast. It's WONDERFUL, never loses it edge despite all the chopping I do. Out does the RTAK in retention but RTAK cuts a TAD bit better.
I'll tell you how you can do it, pretty darn easy. First thing I did was remove the handles and get some epoxy remover I think Jasco was the brand. Stripped the finish, then used a orbital sander with roughly 350 grit, then an automotive sanding block with 600 grit and finished it off with a 1500 loaded with Turtle Wax rubbing compound. It left a nice soft Satin finish. Similar to Jet Hot coating for headers. I noticed it cuts alot better in this form due to less friction I believe.
Awesome mod, I noticed on my RTAK that it would sometimes "stick" in the wood because of the coating. Great work with your improvements

That's very impressive. Good job on reprofiling this edge !
I was hesitating between a KB Beckedr BK9 and the RTAK II... You may have put some weight over RTAKII's side of the balance here.
