I aspire to one day compose and preform like that! Bach was great! But did you know Heinrich Schenker, the brilliant composer/theoretician/author made this piece the subject of an entire book?
The performance of that young artist brings relax and spiritual peace. It's a superb rendition with crystal clear sound and a legato that only the great can produce. Thanks for sharing that masterpiece with us.
This is a wonderful performance, refined, articulate, beautifully musical. Bravo. Where is this accomplished pianist hiding? We need more performances from him, please.
I am familiar with Gould's, Gulda's, Brendel's, Agi Jambor's, and some other posted versions of this difficult work. The masterful performance here conforms to the highest artistic standards and, therefore, the pianist's name should definitely be posted. Bravo, bravo!
Darn, I don't usually like this piece played on the piano, and I don't like the use of the pedal, but this guy makes it work anyway. Clear and precise. Very cool.
Bach is awesome. It's usually not easy for people to appreciate his music. But hes one of my top 3 most favorite composer. Paganini, Beethoven, bach, Chopin.
What a genius Bach is. This sounds almost like Beethoven: so ahead of it's time. We can barely here the chromaticism. Not to mention a great player. Thanks!
This piece sounds SO ahead of its time... It's one of the last complete pieces Bach ever wrote, and there's a lot of innovation in it that was considered "garish" and "mad" in its own time - yet the same people that were dissing Bach's futuristic final pieces were calling him "outdated" five years after his death.
When will they ever learn... you can never restrict such a Genius within the bounds of such mediocre detractions. Bach is more popular today than any of his rivals that outliveb him.
Actually, the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D minor exists in multiple versions dating from the 1720s and the 1730s.
The truly futuristic elements of this piece stem from Bach's harmonies. However, this pianist's very romantic interpretation certainly gives the illusion of it being more futuristic than it is, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Well actually, Bach probably wrote this piece in the late 1710's or early 20's, the first remaining manuscript is from 1730, so not quite 'one of the last complete pieces Bach ever wrote' (sounds dramatic, but doesn't make sense). Also, his keyboard music was rather popular in his own time, especially amongst musicians. This piece has survived in more than 30 manuscripts, so this piece probably was popular even is his own time. I agree to you however that it is an absolute masterpiece!
did you hear merulo, frescobaldi, rameau or chambonieres? itºs not so ahead of his time, but its a really good work. In fact, Schoenberg said that his genius its not on his style, its in his idea. It doesnt sound so ahead of his time, but the development of the ideas is really great.
now what makes you say that? i'm guessing you search for performances by asian musicians and paste that one word on each one. this is a wonderful performance, not robotic at all. you are a fool.
A robot? Yes, maybe, but a highly emotional robot at that. It takes non-human skill to play Bach like this, but it also takes a good deal of emotion to achieve such a feat.
eee...gspaulsson studiate le scale oh babbaleo..qlla ke tu kiami a-d ed e-g cn 10 note della scala cromatica sono in realta semplicemente tt note appartenenti alla minore melodica di re, ascendente e discendente...fatte le seghe
Your sound is exquisite. So delicate. Phrasing is excellant. Everytime I here you play that first phrase I say, "Ah!". Although I'm very much an auethentic performance kind of person, I still love to hear Bach on the piano.
If this was on a CD I would buy it in a heartbeat.
This isn't in a chromatic scale, it's in D minor. The fugue starts with two chromatic scales a-d then e-g and ends up containing 10 notes of the chromatic scale, but it's definitely in d minor.
Well considering this is baroque music it is pretty amazing how adventurous Bach was. The harmonised Bach uses are well ahead of his time. But if you listen to the a minor prelude no. 20 (and the fugue that follows is brilliant) from the well tempered clavier book 2 you will here all 12 tones in the first 2 measures. Now that's impressive!
truly one of the best interpretations I have heard in fifty years... mesmerizing and bursting with delightful washes of discovery and transparent intentions... thank you!

I loved it. Thank you for sharing this very high-quality recording. I have been a fan of Alfred Brendel's performance myself; haven't heard Schiff's yet.
Excellent job! You're a technically solid player, and very musical.
I'm also working on this piece for an upcoming recital, and it's very interesting to listen to a different interpretation. (i.e. I play the end of the Fantasy quite softly.)
One of my favourite pieces ever! Although i prefer this on harpsichord thus guy did about as good a job as possible on a piano... Ive seen so many shit performances this is a delight to see!
