I find military robots to be absurd. Think about the long term. In the battlefield, you either have robots killing people, robots causing external damage, or robots destroying robots which is a waste of money. I say put peace negotiating robots in negotation with each other so that we might find a way to get rid of war altogether.
they said it was never programmed to put that thing in the cup, it was never programmed to know about the cup, so think about what it will be... i guess this will be the beginning of the total crisis of all...
Why the progress on those systems is so slow?Rodney B. and Doug Lenat are talking their BullS for so many years that I stopped counting them. They have made tiny quantitative growth but no qualitative leap.
In any brain there are only neurons, connections and fluids.
Letters are pictorial representations of sound.Sounds form speech=>forms thinking=(invoking/mixing representations of speech, pictorial information in the brain and muscle representation of them).
Yes it knows. It is a simple sensory trick that measures if the object slips away and then the robot gradually increases the pressure until it stops slipping. We humans do the same when our eyes are closed and have to feel the weight of the object. The robot and human will fail if full cup with liquid has softer walls and solid bottom. However the blind-folded human would quickly find the solution to support the cup closer to the bottom while the machine would need Lenat's CYC to succeed.
@gespilk cool, i know nothing about programming robots, i just love them, and love seeing them progress, they're starting to move better nowadays, asimo's comin along in leaps n bounds, literally. they could try giving the robot fingerprints to help it grip, as thats what helps us grip along with pressure, its also what makes gekko's seem to stick to walls, they just have really deep fingerprints for extra grip, can u imagine what could be created if all the worlds robo techs collaborated
I agree.Everybody seems to be doing their little bit of research and there is no consensus what is the best way to proceed.
For the Artificial Intelligence part of cybernetics Lenat and others believe in top down approach. Rodney Brooks believes in bottom up approach. Others believe in direct modelling of the brain. Some cheer for the Chinese room approach chatter-bots. Neurobiologists get exited about direct scanning, mapping, probing to unravel the secret.
There is only one acid test I would like to put it to before I accept it has anything similar to animal intelligence. Is its behavior completely predictable by computer simulation (in theory)? If yes, then it is far from being anything close to "alive" no matter how sophisticated it looks.
Robots are cool and all but if robots do everything we should be doing we will evolve badly in the long run... Meaning we will become weak because we use robots to do everything...
For example: Immunity against radiation from doing stuff in space or stronger bone structure and muscles from labour.
@Lordp00m I think robots are needed for a good reason. Dangerous tasks cannot always be left to humans.
That's what I think when I take heat, acid, the lack of air in the space & zero kelvin (−273.15°C), or the insanely high pressure undersea into considerations.
We ain't gonna be weaker than we are, and we're still gonna evolve even if the humanity find it necessary to use robots for some tasks.
It would especially be useful in the space for constructions somewhere in the future.
Is the robot predicting use kinematic predictions and decisionmaking or I'd this clever programing? Can a robot figure out how to assemble an engine by observation and deduce the tools to use based on their kinematic properties?
I would like to see robots go to war for us, using remote commands from thousands of miles away. Tiny robots that look like insects destroying the enemy from far away.
@allwoodtrucker If that were real war would become a game... Not only that if terrorists would get their hands on something like that it would be catastrophic...
Imagine a power hungry politician or a fanatic who came to power somewhere pushing a button which kills thouzands or milions just because he wanted more power or money... Wars would be limited by the building speed of the country and nothing else. With human nature the way it is, things would turn out very badly sooner or later.
Stop making them cant u c wat ur doin? we will loose our jobs and robots could easily malfunction. listen to me if we do this we will make a time machine in the future and the robots will start a war against us. u have 2 listen to me this is our future. dont think im crazy coz im NOT! This is our future!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soetoro Recovery 101 Social security=broke Medicare=broke Medicaid=broke Amtrack=broke Post office=broke FannieMae/FreddieMac=broke but we will fix it by destroying one industry after another which we will persuade you to HATE auto companies=hate banks=hate oil companies=hate mortgage lenders=hate coal companies=hate pharmacutical companies=hate utility companies=hate insurance companies=hate rich doctors=hate rich ceo's=hate profit=hate prosperity=hate Liberty=hate
F*** transformers and f*** terminator. If you want an accurate portayal of what the future has in store, look up the movie "ghost in the shell", and if any of the concepts from that movie seem too advanced, look them up on google for all the things in that movie are currently under development. We will soon become slightly cybernetic, and there will be robots/neurobots to take on all the laboured tasks that we do not really need.
The west's portrayal of robotics has always been war. If you look at eastern cultures they use robots for helping humans like greeting people, racing, modelling etc. while out here in the west our militaries get ahold of them and use them for war, corporate automation of our work etc but what happens in Ghost shell? What kind of views does it take for society, culture and us. What do we do?
Wow its amazing to see just how far robotics have come. Think it will be many years before we see robots on the High Street though, they would just be to damn expensive :)
WE have robots in sweden in july this year who's going to clean our streets .. its just a test i guess but its soon intergrated in our lifes.. D-day is near :P
you guys talk ike that will be a good thing but it will actually be bad... what happens if the job your working at right now... will be replaced with a robot? who will beneft? certainly not your but the capitalists will... youll be the bum on the street asking for change while the captitalists give you1cent...
only a certain number of people will be kings everyone else will be the poor citizens
That's one short term possibility, but in the long term, humans will probably be in a supervisory role for these robots, and as robots take over more menial jobs, having a higher area of knowledge will become increasingly important. Your concerns are valid, but they should be addressed in a way that doesn't avoid the inevitability of robots taking over more rudimentary tasks.
this is not to say work is the sole source of artistic expression for humans, but it is crucial.
and just as industrialization largely benefitted a minority- as it still does, the robotization of the future economy will similarily increase class inequality.
the fairly communist proposition that techno-salvation will eliminate alienation is wrong as i see it.
Hahaha. Skynet is cool. Don't blame the AI, blame the creators. They designed it for war. It was just doing what it was programmed to do(protect itself from being shutdown, by any means necessary).
YOU HEARD ROBOTS TO HELP IN FACTORIES. This technology if used wisely can free all human labour at some point in the future. What the PROBLEM IS WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE TECHNOLOGICALY UNEMPLOYED. They will not be able to BUY THE GOODS THE ROBOTS MAKE.So the CAPITALIST system never designed to make better more humane and efficient human societies. IS A BAD EVOLUTIONARY branch now. SO WE MUST ADAPT TO AGE OF ROBOTS WITHOUT THE DINASAURS WHO WILL USE THEM ONLY ON THEIR TERMS. BANKSTERS POLITICIANS
