  • Best Smiths song ever, nay, best song EVER - I was so pleased to hear it in This Is England '88, and when they used the Hatful Of Hollow version, it made my day, because I adore Mike Joyce's drum fills in that version - it makes me bleed with joy and cry it tears of happiness and Morrissey's lyrics; you don't want to know what Morrissey's lyrics make me do...

  • @thespoon94 I felt the exact same way when they used the hatful version.

  • @thespoon94 u know your music my friend !! not my favorite smiths tune but up there !! girlfriend in a coma my favorite but there you go !! your obviously english because only us got taste !!

  • @bristolcityifcation LOL, many thankyous xD People need to open their eyes and ears to the gospel of Morrissey and the almighty Smiths, because when genius like this goes un-noticed, I die a little inside because every second of a Smiths song is pure gold and is the only thing that keeps me on this dismal planet! I know, it's serious.

  • i don't know why Morrissey said that he don't like this song...

  • My shower song B)

  • falling over what different does it make

  • never a video

  • The Smiths is pure magic.

  • this was england...

why has it taken you so long???????

  • but im still fond of you

  • Escape the harsh realities of life.....jam out to this song!

  • How is possible to be that cool Steven?

  • People can complain that This Is England shouldn't be why people are here but who cares? There's young kids out there who are finding the genius of Morrissey and the brilliant guitar work of Johnny Marr

  • thumbs up if this is england did'nt bring you here, the great music of The Smiths did

  • @csjh1 RESPECT !! you knocked the nail right on the head !! i have loved the smiths fron the day !! but lets not knock people who watched great tv getting into great music !! so much better than watching the fucking x factor then getting into the shit on that !!

  • One word.....AWESOME

  • Seriously, just look at him. The epitome of cool.

  • Wonderful, I was ikk for a spell at tge hight of the Smith, I lost loads of weight and looked a bit like morrissey, and could do no wrong with the ladies because of it,

    Thank you my boy lol

  • Gorgeous!

  • SAW THEM IN LONDON 1986 NEVER TO FORGET!

    P.S I GUESS 15 NEVER DID...:);

  • great band, great songs, original - among the best ever

  • Morrissey along with Hendrix are worshiped like Gods by myself! that is all.

  • I've spent the last 10 hours watching Smiths videos on Youtube...

I should probably go eat or something :s

  • "why can't i dance like that?"

Because you're actually trying to dance when all you have to do is FLAIL! ;D

  • I remember their first ever appearance on top of the pops. yep im old. He started throwing flowers around

  • Absolutely Marvellous !!!! Thank christ for you tube !! :o)

  • the smiths are an icon morrissey i love you !!! :)

  • Anybody who has anything negative to say about the Smiths or Morrisey shouldn't be on this page anyway. Flip the channel HATERS.

  • the smiths, what a fucking band

  • 1:11 - I wish I could dance like the woman on the right.

  • @xILambyIx if you grew up in the 80's you should know these steps.

  • @moonsong66 I didn't.

  • @xILambyIx it's one the easiest steps ever. Give it a shot.

  • @moonsong66 I think I may.

  • this song is a bit like my local post office.

    ... first class!

  • You'd think with all that random limb movement he'd hit a beat once in a while. Love it though.

  • best guitar i have ever heard. one of the hardest to play.

  • ~ The Smiths are strange. As am I, as am I.

  • God bless Johnny Marr!

  • They always say the people who are the strange and different are usually the most tallented.

  • how good would it to have johnny marr and noel gallagher in the same room just belting out some classics thats what a would love to do if a was a multi millionaire

  • S A V A G E ,,,,,,,,,,,ADD TRANSLATIONS TO EVERY LANGUAGE PLEASE ,,, ENOUGH SAID ,,,THANKS...

  • THE GOLDEN BAND!!! Oh, my sacred one ..cant wait to go and see you this november

  • so fucking goooooood <3

  • Some people try so fucking hard and it all amounts to nothing--So what difference does it make?

  • the devil will find work for idol hands...&

i`m so sick and tired, ... f*** me... amazing.... he is just such an amazing lyricist...

  • @orangefudge "the devil will find work for idol hands to do" that's an old saying, he didn't make that up, just so you know. but yeah hes a great poet for sure

  • @trank31337

Oh yea, I know its an old saying, though looking at my previous comment I can see why you thought I believed it wasn’t , In a very inarticulate way. I just happened to mention he’s a great poet as well liking the saying, I like the fact that he used it to add to his own work., and “I’m so sick and tired” (which of course is his own) just so raw and blunt.. as a lot of his lyrics are,

Sadly, I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing him live yet though, hopefully one day

  • O M G, THAT IS LIKE TOTALLY THE BEST TUNE EVER,,,,,,,SUP JOHN ,,,,SUP EDWARD;;;;

  • Belíssima música !!!!

  • My favourite Smiths song ... just a brilliant piece of music ! ... Wayne

  • i have this entire vhs lol "vhs" whats that? i fucking awesome :)

  • Morrissey was the original hipster

  • @capitaoPorrada in before-time, we called him an "artist"...

  • @trank31337 Congratulations, i´m happy for you.

  • He seems to be lip syncing and trying to make it very obvious in his typical sarcastic manor....Love him

  • @oldpunkster I used to live there.

  • Morrissey is enough to make me gay.

    I love that man.

  • The Smiths were all about irony. Check out 1:11 on - Morrissey invents the Melbourne shuffle. He'd love that one ;-) ... godfather of the drum and bass dance staple. Saw them twice and both times the girls (and a few boys) stampeded, swooned and screamed throughout, and I'm sure he loved the irony in that too!

  • FUCKIN' GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

    Greetings from Amsterdam

  • THANXXXX!!!!!

  • No one like him...

  • Morrissey's a great guy! genius in every way and i've always said he wears a shirt well. loved him then and still love him now and i respect his devotion to animals.

    I love you Morrissey! x

  • I remember seeing this on totp like it was yesterday - still smitten

  • I am personally not a fan of Morrisey but The Smiths are fucking hawt

  • I absolutely love the lyrics of this song...Morrissey is just such a brilliant lyricist, and able to write lyrics that aren't too cryptic...but still make you think. This song is amazing

  • "The devil will find work for idle hands to do". London august 2011, are you with me?

  • bloody good song luve it?

  • loved this band ....shame that tv had not appreciated live being live......until later with jools format.....hurrah!

  • fit as fuck

  • When I fell in love with the Smiths.

  • The secret of immortality is to be enigmatic - ask Morrissey. Anyone who didn't buy this record should be strung up by the bollocks, immersed in concentrated sulphuric acid and forced to listen to Gary Barlow's greatest hits Volume 3 until he repents and scours secondhand record shops in seedy Manchester back streets to buy up all The Smiths' albums on vinyl. Just a thought - I've just calculated that Bruce Forsyth has 0.0000000002% as much talent as Johnny Marr.

  • @purplepelican69 "... until he repents and ..." The accepted term for a randomly chosen humanbeing is "she". Well, that's to say, unless you are sexistic/prejudiced. Have good day

  • @IStehSHIT

Actually,I think you'll find that to facilitate literary brevity, the male is assumed to embrace the female, but I did specify "bollocks" so in this particular example I was indeed referring to the male species. I don't think I've come across many females with testicles, apart from in Sweden, obviously. Good luck with the guitar lessons - don't give up at this stage.

  • @purplepelican69 amen!

  • @purplepelican69 Funniest comment on youtube.

  • GOOD .

  • Moz has gotten hot as he's aged. Johnny Marr was / is / always will be brilliant. One of the best bands of the 80s.

  • Morrissery taught me how to dance

  • love this band

  • Mozz♥

  • took me an age to learn this song on an accustic guitar - love it

  • this one means so much 2 me. Precious times when we were young and reckless.

  • This is my favourite Smiths song!

  • I have 153 favorite Smiths songs and this is one of them.

  • Johnny Marr's guitar is bigger than him hha <3 i love him

  • who else can make that major ambivalence he's describing sound and feel as good as this?! i effin' <3 morrissey... and in glasses, even better.

  • this performance is complete genius!!!

  • viva johnny marr!

  • There is nobody like Morrissey. Went to see him in concert at the Royal Albert Hall years ago and he was really lovely towards the crowd. Not forgetting his lovely quiff and snakey hipped dnace. BRILLIANT!!!

  • i would kill for a time machine right now.....

  • He has to be the coolest man in the world...Ever

  • its too bad that this show is never a live performance, he sings much better and with more passion live but nonetheless still always a showman

  • morrisey is a fucking legend.cant wait till fri nite when he playes in the vicar .dublin

  • All men have secrets, and here is mine, so let it be know. So, What Difference Does It Make ? ... F`ing great

  • He is one very attractive man.

  • I'm in my 30's and this is the first time I've heard this song! I've loved How Soon is Now for years (for good reason); but, this is fantastic and my fifth time in a row playing it... soon to be sixth and more.

  • @fuferito You lucky man...I'm in my late 40s and still remember the first moment I heard this song..the first Smiths song I ever heard. I was in the front room and heard this on the TV in the dining room and rushed in thinking- wow..that is something new and very special..hooked on it instantly..it still sounds as fresh and chillingly tingling as it always has!

  • @Steerpike07 "first Smiths song"? Not a bad initiation, mate. Feels great (re-)discovering these great artists through the internet. Have a great stroll (yet again) down memory lane. I'll replay this song, yet again. What is it... my tenth time now?

  • Amazing. The Smiths saved me in my adolescent days...

  • amazingly, morrissey didn't even like this song but I never found out why. i love it and the volume always goes way up when it is on. hmmm

  • I'd gladly give up my youth in a heartbeat to live that era

  • morrissey wore those glasses when it wasent fashionable NOW every little idiot wears them thinking there being diffrent ...morrissey = total original

  • @bensimps123 LOL well said!

  • @bensimps123 I think Buddy Holly wore em 1st

  • @slayerfan666666 no his were black

  • @bensimps123 Lol fuck I am blind lol.

  • @bensimps123 NHS glasses rules!

  • @bensimps123 I do love those glasses on him....

  • Comment removed

  • @bensimps123 Absolutley agree. This band, and other Mancunian bands, pioneered this sound and the melancholic look ( 20 years ago) that is now rife amongst the ridiculous emo arseholes that think they are original.....utter wankers who should look at this and then get a job.

  • @bensimps123 they were sort of designed in the early 1940's, and everybody wore them in the 80's. but yeah i definitely see what youre saying

  • @Volcanic9 pop stars didnt ,it wasnt cool enough

  • @bensimps123 your comment isn't very original, either :)

  • @bensimps123 Um.. he actually needed glasses, he started wearing them at 13. It wasnt for fashion purposes lol

  • @MELiddy1 he wore contacts alot as he does now , he wore them for an image ..as an outsider .he wore a hearing aid as well .

  • @MELiddy1 I would expect somebody that happens to know when he started wearing glasses to know why he started wearing those glasses in particular... ah well.

  • @bensimps123 They're also more functional.

  • moz number one

  • what a tune

  • sixteen clumsy and shy at the time...this just blew me away!!!!

played it twenty times a day and danced about like a cracker for a whole year or so.

Still sounds fantastic, and conjures up some great memories of that long hot summer in Newcastle upon Tyne!!!

  • Dance partyy!

  • Maybe the most honest lyrics in music. Fantastic!

  • BEST song EVER!!!!

  • greatness

  • I never could figure why Moz disliked this song so much. It's bloody brilliant and he can moves his feet better than MJ ever could...

  • I just loooooooove them.

  • Who can say The Smiths are miserable after watching this and who but the Moz could move their feet like that? The Eighties may have had a lot of bad things (Duran Duran, Thatcher, Reagan and George Michael to name a few) but at least we had The Smiths, this we can be grateful for

  • @jbainlondon

WTF Duran Duran are legends in their own right! Love the Fab 5

  • I love the way Moz is dressed here... SO coping it.. XD

  • A life-changing moment.

  • Johnny is using a 355 in the vid, but it sounds like he used a Rick during the actual recording. I love TOTP, never deviates from the studio recording!

  • THIS FUCKING SONG IS ORGASMIC!!!!!!!!!!

  • sweet .......... :0)

  • A lot of the time Johnny Marr used a Rickenbacker 330, sometimes a 12 string.

  • It's just gallons and gallons of love. God, I remember actually seeing these ToTPs performances when I was growing up, just rolling around the floor in paroxysms of glee and Mozza overdoses. *sigh* Those were the days.

  • Love

  • If you look at the backing dancers, Morrissey starts to mock them at the end of the video. That's why he is flailing in his dance.

  • THIS IS MY HAPPY PLACE!!!!!!!!! <3

  • nobody knows how to deliver lyrics like Morrissey - he can take a narrative story and make it musical - that is a gift that born artists only have - must be nice

  • must have a loud voice.

    there's no mic.

  • very good....

  • A fantastic band and this, in my humble opinion, is their best track by a country mile. I recall at the time people saying they were depressing but the power of the music and the lyrics is just immense. Few bands have this ability - i'm thinking The Stones and The Who and really this is an anthem just as is Jack Flash or My Generation. Genius, pure and simple.

  • great the way the song ends abruptly.

  • The Smiths rules ! TOTP is a shit !

  • groundbreakingGenius!!!!

  • This is the best
