And if you are walking in your city freely and openly gay is because someone here (influenced someone where you are) to march and fight for your dumbass. Castro may not be what it used to be- but because of what happened here, you are able to have what you have back home!! Please dont forget it. If you come to the castro, dont trash it. Its small, but cute. If you come from big cities (i.e. LA, SEA, NYC, MIA, etc), you might as well understand that what you have at home is probably better than what you'll find here "in terms of" gay nightlife. However, the city is amazing and encourage you see other places within the city. Marina, North Beach, etc, have a better night life. But note they are all straight! We can all be judgemental, but this city is lame for gays, but its amazing to live

I noticed some negative comments on Castro. I am from LA and i miss the nightlife there,but note this city has a lot more to offer than just gay bars. Its unfortunate that the hype of the gay era is gone. I wished i would have lived here in its prime (60's-80's). The gays who lived through it have stayed and maintained its history. Young crowds come and go. But the truth is that guys are nicer, and friendlier here. For the gays: drop the attitude, you are not in LA or look like the boys there!

Dont come to SF unless you have an open mind. If you like bears, older crowd, and scruffy guys, this is the place for you. Castro was huge in the 70's and 80's and some of its survivors NEVER left and still live here. But the night life and parties are all gone. This city has its own lifestyle and Its a more relaxed but unique place. Please dont have high expectations of the gay community, its small. GAYS please take a chance to look pass the castro and you can find better nightlife elsewhere.

I went to San Francisco this past August and it was amazing! I stayed in North Beach right off Broadway and Columbus near City Lights bookstore. Just so you know I'm straight but completely PRO Gay Rights. I had seen the Movie MILK and it was amazing when I was in the Castro. Standing outside Castro Camera was breath taking to say the least. There is just an aura that can't be over looked. I was speechless. We Gotta give em HOPE. R.I.P Harvey Milk. Oh and Ike's place has amazing sandwiches.

I work in SF and I've never been to the Castro. One of my gay friend once told me that its a racist dump. Which was a bit surprising since I would think that gays in the Castro would be more tolerant of other races. But whatever...I'm sure it looks like any other neighborhood in SF.
