Yup. The light weight and compact folded size made it pretty useful - but there are other folding bikes that are also practical and economical. Kent's current 16" folder with the 3 spd gear hub is a great deal. Outfitted with a coaster brake and internal hub gears, it's extremely low maintenance.
Google "folding bike carry rack." Althouth you may not find a custom rack that looks like this one, a variety of aftermarket racks may work. The key is to find an adjustable rack with bendable front supports and with rear supports that are hinged. The rear supports will need to be shorter than on a standard rack too.
The carry handle built into the frame is designed so a cyclist can slide their hand through to carry the bike BUT only if your hand is small. I can slip just two or three fingers through comfortably but this is sufficient for carrying the bike. To keep the bike folded, I use the bungee that I bought to carry items on the rear carry rack. A velcro strip also works well.
Thanks, now I found the handle. It's actually a well thought spot that balanced the weight nicely. Still, I can lift my 18 lbs cat and 30 lbs dog easier than this bike.;-)
The Ultralite 6 speed shown in the video is actually the 2006 model. The current Ultralite 6 weighs 25 lbs including the carry rack, fenders, and kickstand.
I use a bungee cord the short one. hook it on the luggage rack around the tires to the oval hole in the frame you can get a luggage strap if you want to carry it. I weigh 320 lbs and can use this little bike had to upgrade the seat and the rear tire to thorn but can ride it for about 2 miles to get away from the truck I drive. Go to eat fold it palce it at the table get my munch grub up and out the door. Need a drink holder. I always leave the seat up since it can be trouble to reset.
Find the height you want for the seat post and lock the seat post quick release lever. Using a permanent marker, draw a line on the seat post tube where it enters the frame. You now know exactly where to set the post in the future. :-)
Larry, you need to get some dude to help you film your videos....pay a homeless guy $5 to follow you with the camera or something....and maybe chain him to a tree so he won't take off with it. BTW, do you have video of this fitting in a suitcase?
Although chain clearance rules out large chainrings on the Ultralite, you can upgrade to the 9 speed Shimano Capreo rear cassette and freehub. The top gear sprocket on the Capreo has just 9 teeth (most cassettes have 11 teeth or more for the top gear sprocket), allowing a folder equipped with the Capreo system to go much faster (other sprockets on the Capreo have 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 20, 23 & 26 teeth). The Capreo freehub runs @ $50 and the Capreo 9 spd cassette @ $60.
I'm interested in one of these and may want to modify it per your advice since a slow bike wouldn't work for my longish commute. Are you sure the Shimano components will fit this bike? Are there instructions somewhere on how to do these mods (I've checked YouTube but not found any), especially the hub replacement - looks like it would be tricky. Also, I've read you can use shorter derailleurs with the Capreo system, as well - any suggestions as to which dr would be good? Thanks!
I recently bought this bike, and it's really not bad except for one thing . . . it's geared in such a way that, at the highest gear, you're still going really slowly. I think I really used to go faster on my kick scooter. I've checked at the local bike shop, and it seems that replacing the gearing/transmission would not be worth it for a bike of this price. Does anyone have any suggestions, other than just learning to live with it? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
Currently, the only folder I'd use under all terrain conditions is the Montague Paratrooper or one of the models that are an offshoot of this bike (such as the Montague MX, SwissBike LX, etc.). Since the Paratrooper based bikes all use full size wheels, my answer is that no SMALL WHEELED folder is viable for all terrain riding - at this moment.
I qualified my answer with "at this moment" because I've seen promising possibilities (Giatex had one) but know of none on the market in the USA right now.
I did. Please see the video of the Mobiky Genius in action. As to the Ultralite, I've received 2 prototypes of this bike (one equipped as a single speed, the other as a 3 spd w/Shimano Nexus internal hub). I'm going to shoot a comparative video of the 3 Ultralites but am waiting on verification of the final specs before shooting the video.
they're in walmart for $124 regular price...
bxlxix69 2 years ago
Actually, Walmart has been OUT OF STOCK on this since 2008 when they listed the bike at this price... Strange.
RideTHISbike 2 years ago
They are frequently out of stock (at least in FL) and slow to order more, unfortunately.
libragoddess04 2 years ago
If you find a Kent magnesium folding bike anywhere it's either going to be old stock or used because they're not making them any longer.

there not at my walmart

I finally see the one bike that makes sense and they are out of production?? man that really sucks lol

This bike is out of production. If there are any being sold in the UK, they are old stock.

can the handle bar be replaced with a bmx handle bar? or would that require welding?

You'd need to replace the handlebar stem.

Sorry; the only thing I know about the Indonesian bike market is that folding bikes are fairly popular there...

I bought the identical bike in Canada under the name Raylight but it doesn't come with a carry rack. Where can I buy that rack for it?
Thanks!
:o)
danitajuanita 3 years ago
We have no spare carry racks at this time. When did you get your Raylight? I was told that they have been sold out for some time.
RideTHISbike 3 years ago
Just bought it last week. It was the only one they had. Any idea where I might find a similar rack to fit the bike?
:o)

Can this bike be converted into an electric bike? has it been done? ex. like adding a bionx or crystalyte motor.
rmvrtk 4 years ago
Technically, it's possible but I've received no reports of anyone doing this with their Ultralite folding bike - yet.
I've personally looked into the crystalyte kits. I did not find one for 16" wheels but I know they're available.
RideTHISbike 4 years ago
Not sure how, but this thing really feels more than 23 lbs. in hands. Let's say way more than 23 lbs.
Also, it's not easy to carry it around folded. Can't figure out how to grab it by one hand.

Here's a great tip for resetting the seat height:
Find the height you want for the seat post and lock the seat post quick release lever. Using a permanent marker, draw a line on the seat post tube where it enters the frame. You now know exactly where to set the post in the future. :-)

To unlock the bike requires the quick release to be opened and then to open the safety latch. This is not going to happen while riding.

ooo man, id be afraid to ride that and have it unlock.
