  • I thought the shots of Gance's face, with teary eyes, was supposed to convey his grief over the death of his wife during the production of the film. This was a very depressing film, overall, but one that I had to keep watching until the end. I agree with the commentary that the final hour left much to be desired. I hope the idea that a girl who was found attractive by her adoptive father and brother was to blame for their destruction was not prominent at the time.

  • @RyanPatrick2001 I agree with you regarding several points as in editorializing an opinion on whether melodrama is 'art' or a lingering shot being 'self-indulgent'. These are both subjective to cultural interpretation & can be stated as such while disclaiming her own assertion about it. After all, the language of silent cinema is all about hyper-emotive time, space & body language
