The fact that Secretariat ran without the use of drugs makes him truly the Greatest race horse. Hats off to the Irish and English! They run on hay, oats and water.
The size of his heart(an amazing 22 pounds) was only surpassed by his spirit and beauty. To anyone that doesnt know, Secretariat may in fact be a "once in a lifetime" horse. A truly spectacular animal. Voted 35th on the list of the top 100 athletes of all time. A horse. The power, beauty, grace, and intelligence of this animal brings me to tears every time I revisit his history and re-watch his tremendous and overwhelming victory at the Belmont. A true legend that will never be matched.
I saw Ron Turcott this past week in Waterville, Maine. It was awesome talking to this man. He is very intelligent and shared the moments we wished we could have experienced ourselves with this magnificent animal. I love Secretariat. He is so splendid a creature and I miss him. He will always inspire me to enjoy the precious moments of life. Secretariat will forever live in our hearts.
i wish i could be the jockey who rode but even in the pastures he still wants to gallop rest in peace secretariat just thinking about thhat wonderful legen i get teary and star to cry i love you secreatriat want you to live forever your still alive in my heart
Thank you so much for this film. Now and always.... Secretariat. That's all that needs to be said. So full of life, so happy to be alive. I wish he was still with us. We could all learn something about life from this dear special creature. I am so glad I saw him run and win. To his immortality. I will always love Secretariat.
This horse is still the RECORD HOLDER in the Kentucky Derby 1:59.2/5 and the RECORD HOLDER in the Belmont Stakes 2:24 Flat and WORLD RECORD HOLDER at 1 1/2 miles for the same time 2:24 Flat. It was proven by simultaneous video that he is the RECORD HOLDER in the Preakness Stakes at 1:53.2/5.
The beauty and magnificence of this awesome horse. He makes me want to be the best I can be as a human being. This is a spirit of greatness.... and he continues to share it with us all. There simply are no words for the awe and inspiration of this magnificent animal. RIP forever in our hearts.
What I love about this horse is he loved to run and he knew he could and stretched every inch to run and pushed to run faster and faster every run he was a real athlete would have loved to see them turn him loose on a track with no rider instead of in a padock I bet he would have ran hard and fast like as if he was in a real race Im sorry I just really love this great horse !
Thanks for sharing this. He was one of a kind, and we will not see his likes again. He was more than magnificent. I love him so much. I feel fortunate to have been alive when he was and to have witnessed his PERFECTION!
My first horse who sadly past away in 05, presence felt, secreteriat was his great uncle :) I was so proud to have such a handsome and well bred horse :)
The only bad thing I can say about this video is,,,,I wish it could last forever! I could watch this magnificent creature run and play all day long. He is perfection in every way. TY so much for your videos. Keep them coming cause I will be watching them all. :)
Posting most appreciated. Secretariat - 12 years old, still showing his championship style. Running for the love of running. Maybe that's why he won so much? RIP Big Red. We will never forget you! Best Wishes To ALL.
Love this - especially the scene showing his reluctance to let go of the grass (and accompanying flower) that was clamped his mouth during his gallop around the pen. I had a TB, and I used to spend hours in the pasture playing with him like this. He was the real thing. Thanks for sharing!
when i was about 6 or 7 (im 14 now) we got a horse named Tango his racing name was Schnapps Turn and we won 4 races when he was 3 and then he retired and everyone forgot about him. I have no idea how but he ended up at a lesson barn. And he is cousins with Secretariat... and guess what he died of his coffin bone like disintegrating...i think that the dieing of hoof problems runs in there family...(there cousins bcuz Bold Ruler is Secretariats sire and Bold Ruler is Tangos great x5 grandfather :)

What a wonderful find. Where on earth did you get this? Thanks so much for sharing all of your wonderful videos. I just realized he is running with a dandelion in his teeth, how adorable. He would have made one hell of an event horse.
its so sad to think that 7 years after this he died. Such a young and great stallion (i know 19 isnt to young for a horse but they normally live to be around 25-30)
lovely video he was so vibrant and beautiful, thank you for posting. I remember seeing him run the triple crown,I was 15 and just in love with that big red horse. Have an original painting still in our home. The movie brought back great memories. RIP Big Red, you are the best!

Four people clicked the dislike on this video. That just kills me. If you don't like Secretariat, fine but to dislike this video ? Takes all kinds to make a world I guess !
I just watched the movie and wanted to see more of him! Thank you! I met Secretariat in 1984.It was a highlight of my life.I have a lock of his hair! He was magnificent!!
Secretariat will always be the best race horse that ever lived i watched the movie it was amazing and i watched the real race it very unbelievable that it could have happened and i hope he will never be beaten by any other horse in racing i love him i wish i could have seen the race in person and could have met him too :)
What a wonderful tube! Thanks so much for posting it. I've watched it numerous times already and love towards the end where he's running with some wildflowers in his mouth :-) You could tell just how happy he was to be alive and running.
One thing I'm seeing in this video is the tremendous power in his hind legs. Also the timing of the hind legs versus the front legs was perfect. Anyway, just my amateur observations!!! :) And those massive muscles. It's hard to believe he's 12!!! Thanks again. Did you film this yourself?
Thank you .... amazing footage. One of my greatest regrets in life is that I didn't travel from Ohio (where I lived) the short distance to Kentucky to see Secretariat in the '80s. My Dad would have loved to go, as well. I never knew Secretariat was there, but that's really no excuse. I never looked into it. I blew it! But your video helps make up for that! Now my Dad's in heaven, hopefully riding Big Red himself! :)
I was one of the honored ones that got to see him make history at the Downs when he won the Derby. I don't think we even realized at the time what we had seen. Then I also got to see him several times while he was standing at stud. He would run around his paddock, throwing his head and snorting, then come back and stand in front of you as if to say, "look at me"! He was a beautiful horse. Thank you so much for this wonderful video. It's amazing!
watch him at :53, he's close to parallel with the ground... in The Horse That God Built by Lawrence Scanlan (book is renamed) someone said that he cld get very close to ground as he wld fall over, but he had such control, such muscular strength it was amazing.
Thank you for placing this for us to see. I loved watching Secretariat run, in 1973, and it surely is good to see him run again. He gave us a lift, still does.
I love this clip.I wonder how the Secretariat movie is doing?I saw it and enjoyed it but I feel the movie is 38 years too late.I guess the Seabiscuit movie was a better script.I hope to see the barn where Big Red was born. Its near Richmond,Va.so the next time I am in that area,I want to see it ( across the road from the new VA state fairgrounds).
This video is one of the best eulogizing Big Red. It captures his exuberance, his pride and his pleasure in movement that no still picture could do. I replay his videos often and every time my eyes prickle with tears. Secretariat -- in conformation, style, movement and immense joy of living is perfection . Its true even, as here, when he is past his racing prime. The Secretariat movie failed in my eyes because those docile stand ins could not convey the power and presence of the original.
@Tylergmom love your comments... what we need is a PBS American Experience or Ken Burns doing Secretariat justice in the exquisite way he does his documentaries. I've e-mailed American Experience and pleaded. Who knows, maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised ! I sure hope so.
I love this video and have watched it many times. His powerful presence really comes through, especially in the close-up scenes of him charging around. I also love the scene where he's running with a piece of clover hanging from his mouth. He could be comical at times, too. What a personality. There just aren't words to describe him, really.
Secretariat: Earth and Heaven combined--The greatest athlete of all time. If he stole a piece of your heart, look up to the sky on a dark velvet night--you might catch a glimpse of him as he races by. Once in ten thousand years, a piece of Heaven slips through the cracks and overwhelms us with beauty and greatness here on Earth. Secretariat--Can you slip through the crack one more time? We miss you.
Beautiful! I wished the director had used this footage and some of the infamous Belmont of '73 at end of the movie, during the credits. The audience sat at the end...seemed we were all wanting to see a piece of the 'real' legend, Big Red.
Awesome horse! There will never be another like him.
The new movie about him is good. Went with friends and we remember his triple crown campaign. It's good to hear him thunder across the track again.Loved him then and love him still. Go Big Red!
Thank you for posting this--I can't watch it enough. And I appreciate your great job of monitoring comments--I am so uncomfortable with some of the posts on other sites. I saw the movie "Secretariat" last week and will never forget the magic of the Secretariat Tripple Crown sweet--my first year of following the event. I fell in love with this magnificent horse and was at the KY Horse Park the day his statue was unveiled. Was able to see Turcott and Chennery and others. Amazing.
@kentuckydeb55 I appreciate your kind words, and will continue to monitor comments. I agree with you; many other channels allows things that should not be posted for anyone to have to see. The often vulgar language and petty fighting is plain silly, and really detracts from the YouTube horse racing experience, IMHO.
I haven't had a chance to see the movie yet, but have heard mixed reviews. It'd be great to see the Meadow team in person; I'm envious. :)
@kentuckydeb55 Years ago I lived in Bourbon County and had the priveldge, no honor of seeing Secratariat in person face to face. A once in a lifetime experience. Most magnificant animal I have ever seen. It's hard to watch these videos without crying.
Still chewing up the ground at age 12 just for the sheer joy of running! Secretariat is my favorite horse of all time and I thank you for sharing this.
I just LOVE horses!! My mom owned one when she was little but i've lived in the city my whole life but horses have and will always be my favorite animals!!!I think they have as much soul as like three of any other animal. I used to love visiting my g-ma on the farm but the time i was born she had either sold them or they had died of old age.
So happy to see this footage of Big Red romping in his paddock. Simply fabulous! I've been to Claiborne many times, and got to stand in his stall (shortly after Unbridled passed away in 2002). Been told he knew he was a star, and particularly liked children. If you visit the Lex area and only have time to see one horse farm, I recommend Claiborne, hands down. The grooms do the tours and know their stuff. Book in advance and bring a rose for Secretariat's grave if you like.
@AzeriZ1 I totally agree with this post. Claiborne is an amazing place and wonderful to visit. I have been often during the 70's and 80's and it is something that is well worth the time.
I thought oh my god at 0:23 hes gonna hit the tree!! This is the stuff champions are made of!! Good job he let him off the lead rope or he would of gone for a flying lesson!
I have this video of Secretariat saved on My Favorites, because I just can't get enough of watching my FAVORITE Horse of all time. I was only 15 years old in 1973, but I remember watching Secretariat like it was just yesterday. LONG LIVE SECRETARIAT :) Thanks for this AWESOME video !!
I find it funny that no one bashes Big Red on here....You see it all the time. No matter how good the video is... there is always a few people who leave hurtful comments...Big Red was just that good!!!!
@PlaYah1979 Oh, trust me, there has been PLENTY of Big Red bashing here, I just don't allow it. It's just one of the reasons I choose not to allow automatic comment posting anymore. That, along with spam, profanity, crude comments, etc. I'm sick of that garbage tarnishing the enjoyment of these videos, so I deep-sixed auto posting. But you're still right though, Secretariat was, and is that good!
secretariat was a great horse. i have his grandson, his name is Ernie, aka conflict of interest. he used to be a great dressage horse but is now shown in hunter shows. hes a beautiful mover just like his grandfather. they have the same left shoulder and the same color. the only difference between them is ernie has a blaze and 4 white stockings. Hes beutiful and i love him. <3
Love Love Love this video....the Belmont is coming up this weekend....there are many sons of AP Indy...many chances for a great grandson of this big boy's to end up in the winners circle...
Who says racehorses are in their prime as a 3 year old? Secretariat here could have won the Triple Crown all over again if they let him :) I never get tired of watching his races!
Incredible video. As a 12 year old, he still looks just as beautiful, strong, and energetic as he was at 3. You can see how much he truly loved to run - what a horse!
Thank you for giving us a chance to see a 12 year legend doing what he did better than all ...This was truly enjoyable to watch.. He loved to run didn't he?
What a wonderful vid! I had read that "Big Red" loved to play and run around; so much so that there was concern early on that he might not develop into a true racer because he goofed off too much! Hah! The upcoming movie will hopefully bring the majesty and magic of the greatest t-bred ever to a whole new generation. I love and miss you, Secretariat.
Adorable how he stands there perfectly until the moment his handler unclips the chain, and then he zooms off.
It's so refreshing to see a video of him not on the track. It baffles my mind when watching videos like this that people say racehorses are forced to run. Secretariat looked like he was having the time of his life.
Even at 12 years old, you can see the power and the magnificance of Secretariat. You can also see that he enjoyed getting attention.
The best thoroughbred racehorse that ever lived. Period.

Thank you for placing this for us to see. I loved watching Secretariat run, in 1973, and it surely is good to see him run again. He gave us a lift, still does.
I enjoyed the music choice.

Tylergmom 1 year ago
@Tylergmom love your comments... what we need is a PBS American Experience or Ken Burns doing Secretariat justice in the exquisite way he does his documentaries. I've e-mailed American Experience and pleaded. Who knows, maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised ! I sure hope so.
bon1042 1 year ago

Amazing.
kentuckydeb55 1 year ago
@kentuckydeb55 I appreciate your kind words, and will continue to monitor comments. I agree with you; many other channels allows things that should not be posted for anyone to have to see. The often vulgar language and petty fighting is plain silly, and really detracts from the YouTube horse racing experience, IMHO.
I haven't had a chance to see the movie yet, but have heard mixed reviews. It'd be great to see the Meadow team in person; I'm envious. :)
Happy you enjoyed the video.

AzeriZ1 1 year ago
@AzeriZ1 I totally agree with this post. Claiborne is an amazing place and wonderful to visit. I have been often during the 70's and 80's and it is something that is well worth the time.

I find it funny that no one bashes Big Red on here....You see it all the time. No matter how good the video is... there is always a few people who leave hurtful comments...Big Red was just that good!!!!
PlaYah1979 1 year ago
@PlaYah1979 Oh, trust me, there has been PLENTY of Big Red bashing here, I just don't allow it. It's just one of the reasons I choose not to allow automatic comment posting anymore. That, along with spam, profanity, crude comments, etc. I'm sick of that garbage tarnishing the enjoyment of these videos, so I deep-sixed auto posting. But you're still right though, Secretariat was, and is that good!
Take care.

What a fantastic video! I read that he enjoyed racing another horse in the field next to him. He was indeed "the horse that God built".

James1113 1 year ago
Adorable how he stands there perfectly until the moment his handler unclips the chain, and then he zooms off.
It's so refreshing to see a video of him not on the track. It baffles my mind when watching videos like this that people say racehorses are forced to run. Secretariat looked like he was having the time of his life.
