Any performance in a club that wasn't meant for a tv special is technically the comedians still working on their material. When Louis performs in clubs, it's all practice for the HBO special. So not all the jokes are solid. But he's still better than most.

It's a routine, they have to memorize what they come up with, find what works with crowds and how to time it just right. Very hard to do and with someone like George Carlin, takes a lifetime to perfect. Anyone who complains about there being a routine is an idiot who doesn't even understand comedy or acting.
you know what comedians SHOULD do? They should come up with 100% brand new, fresh, AND funny material, every night they do a show. Who cares if they do 5 shows a week, I NEVER want to hear the same joke twice. Ever......

@Dionysus187 Even with an act, stand-up is always partly improvised as you go. Remembering, switching and altering jokes/stories, size and vibe of crowd, hecklers, and the comedians mood.
Hee hee!some of this is on the CC DVD, but he keeps the material fresh by varying it, and it was already funny in the first place, so not a problem. Comedy my husband and I can both laugh our asses off at (I blab on just like his wife, probably worse, I hear myself doing it and can't stop, like now-enough)Definitely worth a watch/listen for fans-or if you want a good sample of his material, this is a good place to start and see if you laugh your ass off too.
I love this set.
