  • It's one minute long! Given that music is all about shape and development, I'd reserve judgment on 63 seconds worth, I think...

  • Utter garbage. Then again, that's what Braxton always produces. No surprise here.

  • They certainly are getting out there. I think one of the things to remember when listening to highly improvised music is that fully half of the value is in being present at the time it is created. Recording technology does few favours for the avant garde.

  • I was never a big braxton fan ,although I did like his creative music orchestra 1974(?) big band recording...I really don't like this though....

  • whatee

  • ugh...jazz diarrhea

  • Jazz Club for the Mentally Challenged??

  • Doesn't help that the recording is awful and devolves the sax/flugelhorn/bassoon into farting noises.

  • Great avant-garde performance! Definitely "New Thing" area code. Braxton is one of our greatest musicians. If you don't like avant-garde, say so, but don't attack a great musician because you don't like that school of music. Learn some tolerance & restraint. If this video confirms that you don't like this school of music, then move on without comment. Please!

  • well i love braxton and braxton's music but this group sounds decidely weak as far a s braxton's groups have gone in the past. further, this sounds like a free group improv that really is taking no shape at all and is far from interesting. I would braxton's own standards here to suggest that music should move forward. On this recording if i labeled the music 1967 on the Nessa label, i don't think anyone would have guessed that it couldn't have happened then. that's 40 years old sound.

  • Great avant-garde performance. As you know Anthony Braxton is not one to stand still for very long and who likes to show versatility at all times. But remember on YouTube you're getting snippets of performances most of the time, so 'locking in' on tempo or what is happening is very difficult, not to mention the recording equipment which cannot give us true stereo high-quality sound. But it's better than nothing!!

  • I disagree. This is embarrassing to Braxton. there are other available youtube videos to watch that are far more interesting. Thumbs down here. This should be pulled.

  • I probably have listened and played to far more avant garde than most avant garde fans here or elsewhere. Nobody should be treated as if sacred and can't be evaluated on the merits of each performance. For example, I would easily place Braxton's Dortmund in the best 10 recordings ever made. However, his piano cds were some of the worse. He has been an inconsistent artist and that should be noted. Some fans, who worship, and don't listen keenly should be more tolerant of criticism & free speech.

  • This is almost a joke. I´ve seen them when they came to Buenos Aires and i couldn´t believe it.

  • contrabass clarinet i believe

  • whats the instrument braxton is playing?

  • only a person who does not play and did not study our great american art form would say 'fuck tradition'

    or:

only a person who does play and has not put in the time to 'attempt' to master the things bird, lester, dizzy and monk left behind for us to learn would say I'm being 'ridiculous'

  • e541210. your post is so ridiculous. open your ears and LISTEN! Then your question is answered.

and then you also will dicover the "roots" in this music. no one ever claimed that this is "jazz"

  • I never thought braxton could really play.I did like his big band recording from 75'.

halverson has been getting a lot of press too but my jury is still out on wether or not she can PLAY as well.

I'm not jazz police ,I like all different styles of great music but there has to be a command of the instrument that is rooted in tradition. That tradition must come out at some point in your sound and time feel(swing)

Think 'john coltrane'-he didn't just appear on the scene playing free music!

  • fuck tradition

  • braxton has many albums that feature standards which he plays fluently and originaly. To question whether or not they can "really" play doesnt really make sense...I mean you dont have to like the music but isnt it obvious that he is a highly skilled instrumentalist.

  • LOL

  • if you dont like this there is a possibility that you like crappy music. I mean if you cant respect coltane than i cant respect you.

  • Jumping into the conversation, I can't respect anyone I've never heard of..

    Who's Coltane?

    lol @ 0:40
