She is not so good at opera arias (okay, it isnt an opera aria), I dont know for sure, is she really a mezzo-soprano? Shame on you, Placido. Once you were a terrific tenor, one of the very greatest operatic artists on stage. Now you attempt ill-advised baritone roles with your diminished, dessicated instrument (id. Boccanegra and Rigoletto, oh what disasters!) in an orgy of arrogant self-indulgence. Here you sink to the lowest concert genre (well paid no doubt), singing silly sugary duets with the trash princess of zero, silicone pop. High time you retired and went home, Maestro.
@philipc67 Hello friend! Placido should indeed be ashamed of himself! Singing with the queen of crossover talentlessness. Trash Princess of Zero! You should trademark that.
@arpeggio1358 Hello my dear, I see you found me. Yes, isn't this clip revolting? Even the piece being performed is a big fat Zero musically. The Trash Girl is clearly out of her depth here vocally and looks like an escort in a posh hotel. Placido, age 70 and counting, still has the remnants of a voice, but he must be paid handsomely for these useless, tasteless, sugary concerts. I listen to the stupid English broadcasters calling this embarrassing garbage "incredible" and "amazing" and I vomit.
@philipc67 Revolting indeed. We vomit together. With that retro glued in place hairdo, I think Silicone Girl looks more like a refugee from a 1940's B movie. Domingo can only stare at her cleavage and sing badly. Embarrassing garbage...there should be a website called YouTrash for this stuff to accumulate.
@arpeggio1358 i that there should be YouTrash but comments like yours and @philipc67 should be the ones it. How dare you insult Katherine and Domingo?! They are one of the greatest singers that have ever lived and if you don't agree then get away from here because there are a lot of people who feel the same way I do!
@CallaLily42 YouTube is a place for discussion. We're all entitled to our own opinions. I have a right to say what I think and so do you.. If you didn't like my favorite singers, I wouldn't tell you to leave. I'd respect your right to your opinion. You popera fans think you know all about music. Trust me, KJ is a pop opera singer. You confuse popularity with greatness. Domingo was a great opera singer, but he lowers himself to sing with KJ.
@CallaLily42 What annoys me is that people confuse popera singers with real opera singers. Opera singers sing roles in complete operas and don't use mics. Popera singers sing isolated arias and always use mics. I just think the two genres shouldn't be confused. Jenkins uses poor singing technique and would never be asked to sing a role in a complete opera. There are many talented opera singers out there who are unknown while KJ gets all the attention and money. It's hardly fair.
@CallaLily42 One of the greatest singers who ever lived? Which planet are you on, poor child? Domingo, yes he was once a great tenor. Now, at 70, he uses his diminished voice in ill-advised baritone roles and these stupid concerts, well paid no doubt. An unforgivable abuse of talent and position. Katherine Jenkins is neither singer nor artist, just a pretty face who dresses like a call girl and sings elevator muzak...badly. Get an education, listen to a real opera singer, note the difference.
@MrChantelleA Except for the wobbly vibrato, audible gulping for air when she breathes, and forcing her lower register so she will sound more like a mezzo than the soprano with no top notes that she really is. She's welcome to her career just as long as people don't confuse her with a real opera singer.
@outthr I'm hardly jealous of her. I just don't like her voice because she uses poor tecn=hnique, gulps for air every few notes, and forces her lower register. People can dislike a singer's voice without being jealous. You popera fans need to realize this and stop using jealousy as an excuse to put down those who disagree with you. Also, popularity doesn't equal greatness.
What I'll never understand is why it seems to make so many people feel so much better to either bash someone else, or to make some sort of misguided attempt to feel superior to another :-/
Catherine Jenkins cannot be said to be an opera singer to begin with. For her it must have been a priviledge to sing with one of the strongest, most respected and most iconic singers. A true opera singer who in his late 60s, managed to drown out the weaker tones of Miss. Jenkins. A wonderful performance!
but it will never be memorable. Placido Domingo must be aware of this and should advise her accordingly. To be a great opera diva, you also need a high level of acting skills. I havn't seen any evidence of this as yet. She has a great career as a class performer of popular song. She should lower her sights and stick to what she does best.
I enjoy watching Katherine sing but cannot accept her as a serious opera singer. There is no way that she will ever be able to compete with the likes of Cecelia Bartoli or Anne-sophie Von Otter in the major Mezzo roles. Bartoli for example had already established herself as a leading interpreter of Rossini and Mozart whilst in her early 20's. Her range and voice control even at that age was phenomenal. Katherine is perfectly capable of giving a more than adequate performance of Bizet's Carmen,
I'm sick of critics who act like there is an absolute truth in the arts. Music is not nuclear physics, where there is only one truth, and the problem is finding it
Ok really? Do you guys know anything about voices, and styles?! She has an amazing voice!!! Stop criticizing...obviously you guys have no clue that a huge voice like hers needs lots of control and support. She's still learning and growing! Her voice won't mature until she's around 30...it's just the way operatic voices are!!! I have a very similar voice so I know what the hell I'm talking about!
@MasterIsh91 ohh really...and who are you the master of voice? Tell me do you know anything about singing techniques and anything about how the vocal cords work? You obviously must think you're all that and know a whole lot more than myself, and anyone else who sings classically. Katherine Jenkins has wonderful technique in her way of singing and bringing it out with each note she sings. Don't criticize unless you know what you speak of!
@lilangelx09 I'm currently at the Royal Northern College of Music studying to become an Opera singer. I know plenty about singing technique and believe it or not I have lessons in how the vocal folds (they're folds not cords) work. Katherine Jenkins has an inferior technique, she is often gasping for breath, her high notes are laboured and unpleasant. She is only famous because she is pretty. I know exactly what I speak of and I know that if you want to hear a soprano, you should look elsewhere!
@MasterIsh91 YOU didn't win a scholarship to the Royal Academy of music though or win ChoirGirl of the Year several times and many other prizes and medals?
@DAXLAW I won a scholarship to the RNCM and the RAM i'll have you know, Katherine Jenkins got into the RAM by accident. They meant to give her place to a very talented cellist called Katherine Jenkinson but got it mixed up. She's a very very rich accident...
@DAXLAW Maybe you should think next time before you go pointing out things I haven't done, I've been studying for 1 term and I can sing better than that bimbo.
@DAXLAW Fact actually, she's awful. The classic fm/classical brit audience love her particular brand of terrible singing and you can't take it when anyone criticises her. She's not an opera singer and she's not even a good classical singer, she needs way more training as anyone with any sense can hear. If you really want proof of my studentship at the RNCM then I'll happily tell you all about it. Go listen to a real singer.
@MasterIsh91 Well if you're half as good as you say you are I look forward to hearing you in the future. Nevertheless it will not help your career libelling others, however preposterous the lies.
Placido, Placido...What were you thinking singing with this insect?!? They must have paid him an awful lot of money to sing with Jenkins. You know he was cringing the whole time. BTW...Classical singers sound just as ridiculous trying to sing pop as do pop singers who try to sing opera!
I suppose many people are jealous of Katherine, because of her early fame and her beauty, and so refused to see her natural talent and hear her wonderful voice.
Katherine is now one of the most famous young singers in the UK, and I have every reason to believe that she will become a superstar like Domingo after like 30 years.
What an insane discussion. A connoisseur gets thumbs down, while the one who calls Maestro Domingo "the old guy" gets thumbs up? Yuck. Her voice is ugly, and my respect for Domingo suffered when I heard that he sang with Lady Mediocre (at the best).
Now gimme thumbs down! For knowing something about singing.
I concur quite heartily with you, frufruJ! How dare one disrespect Maestro Domingo in such a vulgar manner?! I should make him wash his mouth with soap!
@frufruJ I am sorry but I still think the old guy spoils it. He sings funny. From down in his boots, and he ends up sounding like a buzz-saw. Forgive me, I may not be as culturally aware as some of you intellectuals. I am just an old man, sometimes a little absent-minded and forgetful, but I know what I like, and this old Placebo person's singing is much overrated . I also think we should distinguish between true connoisseurs and the merely pompous and pretentious. Thank you.

Obviously very few people know who ows placido domingo is- which shows the power of crossover- he's actually a really famous opera singer who has been in operas all over the world including carmen, achevements many other singers could only dream of.

I'm sure you are a very sweet girl, susietwinkel, but your logic leaves a little to be desired. If obviously very few people have heard of him can he actually be really famous? Even if he is respected in a small circle that is obviously because of his family connections rather than anything to do with singing talent. He really does ruin this song.

I don't claim to be an opera expert but why does a legend like Ms Jenkins sing with a feeble-voiced old geezer like this? He's hopeless. He's straining and has no musicality or warmth of tone that a normal person would find pleasant. There are great young opera singers like Rhydian Roberts, Russell Watson, Lee mead, and even that English teenager Jonathan Ansell who sing so much better than this character. Domino is just a talentless parasite on Ms Jenkins' fame.
You miss the point with Ms. Junkins choosing Placebo as her partner. The next in line, I hear from one who knows, was that fellow Roberts who suffers from Rhydian syndrome. It is the same disease which turned Michael Jackson white against his wishes. It affects the mind too, and turns normally heterosexual, God fearing, young men into pallid, perverse, pedophiles. You can already see it insinuating into that poor Roberts fellow's system. He is expected to be entirely transparent by September.
Really, Mr Voyager, you do seem to be unnecessarily unkind about Mr Roberts. Were you bullied as a child by albino Welsh dwarfs? Surely it would make more sense for Ms Judkins to sing with a younger man like Mr Roberts rather than her old twerp of a father. Not only are she and Mr Roberts more the same age but they are the same height and, I hear from a reliable source, use the same brand of bleach.
Surely you're joking, Old Cranky! I can't seriously believe that you're not putting us on. Come on admit it.
Domingo is the most famous classical/opera singer alive today. He is a living legend and people will be playing his hundreds of recordings long after people are asking "Katherine who?"
I'm surprised that someone of Domingo's stature and fame would sing with someone like Ms. Jenkins. However, I have no problem with it--but a different female singer would have been better.
@rmm413c Sir, making fun of an old man's ignorance is bad form. Very bad form. I am sorry if my knowledge of Opera/classical "singers" But I would suggest caution in claiming Placebo is the world's most famous and accomplished opera performer. Dame (CALL ME DAME!) furi Te Kanablah will have your balls if she hears you say that. And what about Hosea thingmebob -- you know, the one who did all those duets with rising young opera star Hayley Westenra.
Katherine is actualy a favourite of Mr. Domigo ,she has been his speciak guest at a number of his classical concerts . A california magazine critic listed this duet (on his latest album) as one of the albums highlights .
Agree. She's nice, lovely, cute, fashionable, gracious, delightful and whatever....but she should leave the "classical" stage to real opera singers. Quite an operatic Paris Hilton.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What nonsense! She is very well supported and nothing is flopping about all over the place. This Dominingo person is obviously there because he knows the right people and not because he has any talent. There is too much of this rubbish going on in classical music and it is good to see people like Ms Jenkins with real talent getting the recognition they deserve.
You're getting old, Cranky. As for me, I'd like to see her vowels flop out so I could get a good look at them; but, as you say, she is well supported. The old man is her father Placido D. Jenkins. He's a sewer worker and the humidity hasn't helped his voice, poor fellow. If you want to see and hear talent, then give Sophie Westenra a listen. I hear she has a famous brother. I love Sophie, and if she won't marry me I'll kill myself - really, I'm not kidding!
I know exactly where you are Mr Voyager - I have been there myself. But trust me, you will soon get over this girl and wonder whatever you saw in her in the first place. At the moment you are young and your hormones are in turmoil, but, I promise you, in several years time you will look back in amusement at what now seem to you to be such powerful feelings, and realise they were mere infatuations. Focus on your work and practical matters and try to get thoughts of this girl out of your mind.
"This Domingo person"? You're not serious? Your suggestion that he has no talent and is only singing because he knows people in a slightly sub-mafioso way had me screaming with laughter, so thanks! Get some taste though. Cultivate some cuture.
Thanks for uploading this clip...surely performances like this are a bit controversary..the young lady seems to be a bit artificial and her singing lacks expression and lightness. Plácido Domingo nearly seems to help her by not wanting to blow her off the stage with his powerful voice. But listening to the text one understands why both of them do it as they did at the Classical Brit Awards. I like it, but another female singer could have sang better, warmer, delivering more emotions.
bravo

Placido, Placido...What were you thinking singing with this insect?!? They must have paid him an awful lot of money to sing with Jenkins. You know he was cringing the whole time. BTW...Classical singers sound just as ridiculous trying to sing pop as do pop singers who try to sing opera!

I suppose many people are jealous of Katherine, because of her early fame and her beauty, and so refused to see her natural talent and hear her wonderful voice.
Katherine is now one of the most famous young singers in the UK, and I have every reason to believe that she will become a superstar like Domingo after like 30 years.

Jenkins,,,,such a blondy beauty....haha..hard to concentrate on her voice because of her sexiness...lol

For knowing something about singing.
frufruJ 2 years ago 9
I concur quite heartily with you, frufruJ! How dare one disrespect Maestro Domingo in such a vulgar manner?! I should make him wash his mouth with soap!

@frufruJ Well said. No thumbs down.

OldCrankyCurmudgeon 2 years ago
You miss the point with Ms. Junkins choosing Placebo as her partner. The next in line, I hear from one who knows, was that fellow Roberts who suffers from Rhydian syndrome. It is the same disease which turned Michael Jackson white against his wishes. It affects the mind too, and turns normally heterosexual, God fearing, young men into pallid, perverse, pedophiles. You can already see it insinuating into that poor Roberts fellow's system. He is expected to be entirely transparent by September.
ChanceVoyager 2 years ago
Really, Mr Voyager, you do seem to be unnecessarily unkind about Mr Roberts. Were you bullied as a child by albino Welsh dwarfs? Surely it would make more sense for Ms Judkins to sing with a younger man like Mr Roberts rather than her old twerp of a father. Not only are she and Mr Roberts more the same age but they are the same height and, I hear from a reliable source, use the same brand of bleach.
OldCrankyCurmudgeon 2 years ago
Surely you're joking, Old Cranky! I can't seriously believe that you're not putting us on. Come on admit it.
Domingo is the most famous classical/opera singer alive today. He is a living legend and people will be playing his hundreds of recordings long after people are asking "Katherine who?"
I'm surprised that someone of Domingo's stature and fame would sing with someone like Ms. Jenkins. However, I have no problem with it--but a different female singer would have been better.
rmm413c 2 years ago 2
@rmm413c Sir, making fun of an old man's ignorance is bad form. Very bad form. I am sorry if my knowledge of Opera/classical "singers" But I would suggest caution in claiming Placebo is the world's most famous and accomplished opera performer. Dame (CALL ME DAME!) furi Te Kanablah will have your balls if she hears you say that. And what about Hosea thingmebob -- you know, the one who did all those duets with rising young opera star Hayley Westenra.
OldCrankyCurmudgeon 1 year ago
Katherine is actualy a favourite of Mr. Domigo ,she has been his speciak guest at a number of his classical concerts . A california magazine critic listed this duet (on his latest album) as one of the albums highlights .

Poor Domingo, having to sing with such mediocrity. Why do people like her? She's got no support and her vowels are all over the place.
Englishtenor2 2 years ago 16
Agree. She's nice, lovely, cute, fashionable, gracious, delightful and whatever....but she should leave the "classical" stage to real opera singers. Quite an operatic Paris Hilton.

Well, personally I like Katherine awfully lot, she has a special voice which is very very attractive to me

OldCrankyCurmudgeon 2 years ago
You're getting old, Cranky. As for me, I'd like to see her vowels flop out so I could get a good look at them; but, as you say, she is well supported. The old man is her father Placido D. Jenkins. He's a sewer worker and the humidity hasn't helped his voice, poor fellow. If you want to see and hear talent, then give Sophie Westenra a listen. I hear she has a famous brother. I love Sophie, and if she won't marry me I'll kill myself - really, I'm not kidding!
ChanceVoyager 2 years ago
I know exactly where you are Mr Voyager - I have been there myself. But trust me, you will soon get over this girl and wonder whatever you saw in her in the first place. At the moment you are young and your hormones are in turmoil, but, I promise you, in several years time you will look back in amusement at what now seem to you to be such powerful feelings, and realise they were mere infatuations. Focus on your work and practical matters and try to get thoughts of this girl out of your mind.
OldCrankyCurmudgeon 2 years ago
"This Domingo person"? You're not serious? Your suggestion that he has no talent and is only singing because he knows people in a slightly sub-mafioso way had me screaming with laughter, so thanks! Get some taste though. Cultivate some cuture.

There is no need to be rude. I didn't know he was her father. But my point holds, he shouldn't be there.

OK, you do know Placido Domingo, the old guy who you don't like, isn't really Katherine Jenkins father don't you?
What an idiot!
Placido Domingo has been singing since the late 1950's. Honestly, Ms Jenkins is nothing compared to what Domingo has done.

That is extreme of you fhorn1993. The old man's singing is unpleasant but there is no reason to refer to him as an idiot.
