Gringo is one of my favorite Ventures song. The Ventures was a great influence in my playing style and I still plays Gringo in some occasion and thou playing guitar is not my profession it has been my great friend thru all the stages of my life. At 67 I am a retired Telecom consultant and a collector of exotic guitars.
@barrygioportmorien1 and when you hear Conway Twitty's Mona Lisa , you hear a souped-up Nat king Cole...what you hear is The Ventures early style of heavy lead/rhythms, it was probably a flook more than anything.
I love all the vintage instramental groups and many of the new surf bands. I try to play some of the tunes as best I can. I been a ventures fan since they started (I'm 63 yo). One thing about the Ventures, their music was polished it was never sloppy or crude sounding. Although I like a lot of tunes with the rough garage sound, The Ventures were always the best.
Alot of cool electric guitarists before the Ventures but the Ventures were the first to make electric guitars sound cool. The most beloved and most imitated sound from any band.
I guess I'm "old school"...but I still wish they were playing Fender guitars & Bass, rather than Mosrites...but I still love their sound. Having seen them perform here last May,2009...(Casino Regina Show Lounge)..Regina, Sask., Canada....I think Leon Taylor is a better drummer than his (late)father Mel.
@nvr2tallluvr I usually let opinions be what they are, however this tune from 61, they were not yet playing Mosrite guitars, but fender jazz masters and Melvin Leon Taylor Sr. was in his prime deemed world's best drummer (awards rendered), his son Melvin LEON Taylor,Jr.admits he holds no candle to his dad's work (he does have his own style that is good)and Howey Johnson was the drummer for this one...glad you too are a ventures fan.
@stupullen ...Thanks for educating me....and admittedly I guess I WAS referring to Leons "style"...when they performed at the Casino Lounge (here in Regina,Sask.,Canada) back in mid- May ,2009. I'm not only a Ventures fan,but also a fan of The Fireballs, Astronauts, & Trashmen. But of course The Ventures (I think) are the most famous of the instrumental groups. Thanks again for your reply.
@nvr2tallluvr All the groups you listed are some of my top favorites as well...I am proud to say The ventures are celebrating they're 52nd year in the business in 2010 and I am equally proud to have Gerry McGee as a personal friend(A rel cool guy) and even proud to say welcome to you to my you tube family!
@stupullen ..Thanks Stu for your quick post. Man, just imagine...52 years of playing the music we love. I envy you for having Gerry Mc Gee as a persona friend, & at the concert I attended in May,2009...it was in the back of my mind..where's Gerry McGee, altho' when I think of it...both Nokie & Bob Spalding graced us with their presence, both takiing turns on lead guitar, while for the most part...Bob played bass. Thanks for invite to YouTube family. BTW..loved seeing Gerry playing Telecaster.
this little ditty was written by GENE MOLES a great guitarist and inspector at the Ventures Mosrite guitar factory ..he may have even played on this ..i do not know ..NOKIE does a re arrangement [which he has personally played for me ] and it is dynamite [picks like Chet ] enjoy one of the better Venture arrangements
Bob Bogle was one of the two founders & gave up the lead position for bass when nokie gave up bass & took the lead in 1963...bob & don were the two constant Ventures for 50 years.
we all say RIP to bob who passed on in 2009, he was indeed recognized as one of the best.

I am sorry in Japanese.

Great tune, but if you listen close you can hear Conway's version of "Mona Lisa" in it.

Bob Bogle was a virtuoso with his Jazzmaster!

If I had to guess who was playing lead I would've guessed Nokie. The late great B Bogle is sooo underated and deserves much more recognition.
Thanks for the upload Stu.
