So the US refused to hold elections in South Vietnam to prevent an almost certain electoral victory by Ho Chi Minh. That's interesting. Vietnam could have been re-unified without a second Indochina war being fought with the US and South Vietnamese had elections been held in South Vietnam as agreed to in the 1954 Geneva Agreements. This shows that the US was really the author of the second Vietnam War and ultimately of her own defeat in Vietnam.

The Vietminh/Vietcong/North Vietnamese kept fighting and fighting without surrender. First the French, then the Americans and their allies, all failed to defeat the Vietminh/VC/NV. These people were unbelievably tough and brave; they won in two wars which would have broken a lesser people.

Vietnam and France could not have to fight this battle if France accepted the Vietminh proposal with Vietnam as part of "France Federation " but an autonomous state.

If you look at the how much influence that French had on in Hanoi and Saigon, it was really regretted for both to have fought till the bitter end.

Between the workers of Vietnam and the Viet Minh ( Vietnamese Stalinists ) lies a river of betrayal and blood. The only genuine communists in Vietnam were Tạ Thu Thâu and the International Communist League ( Anti-Stalinists ).

North Vietnam and South Vietnam were both authoritarian states, ruled not by workers or by democracy. Current day Vietnam is not socialist, it is nationalist capitalist with a few remnants of old style Ho Chi Minh thought.

Colonialism was not "demonic". In fact it gave Vietnam economic and religious prosperity. The communist use of the argument of "self-rule" was hypocrite, they simply replaced western imperialism with their own, red imperialism. At least under French rule, the Vietnamese people learned about the truth of salvation in Jesus Christ. That is what the communists aimed to destroy.

On the base of the WWII Charle Orde Wingate Chindit operations, the French plan was sound by inserting a full garrison by air and support it by air supply. To suppress this air supply was to take the garrison. It's been done. Take the book of Colonel Jules Roy. At the smaller scale, the GCMA (Groupement de Commando Mixte Aeroporté) was on the same line of air inserion and supply.

Last time I checked US didn't do much better. In fact, the French at least managed to keep the whole country occupied for 50 years. The US failed to occupy half of it for 20 years. But anyway, Vietnamese are great fighters and they well deserved to prevail over both foes.

The USA joined the war because they propably were the next target of hitler after the occupation of the UK. The germans were the best fighting force in history. The americans and the coalition were pretty lucky that hitler lost his marbles during the liberation. If he woul've have listened to his generals the outcome of the war could have been different.

@VersusARCH You need to check again. The United States killed 10 times as many Vietnamese than the French ever could. France also surrendered this war. The U.S. bombed the North into a peace treaty and then left the country. The United States never lost this war while the majority of their forces were in Vietnam. France got their asses handed to them. Also, they did not own the country for 50 years. France ran like cowards when Japan came into the picture. I think the U.S. did MUCH MUCH better.

@VersusARCH Actually the US did not tried to occupy Vietnam idiot. Vietnam war started when North Vietnam, along with the VC invade South Vietnam to impose communism into that country and they had no right to do it. In 1964, the ARVN requested the US to send their troops into Vietnam and so the US did. The US killed five times more NVA troops than what did French tried to with the Viet-Minh. The war was lost due to politics, not cause of military.

@Hperman09 Just as this documentary states, why didn't the South Vietnamese and the US hold the elections that was promised? They feared that Ho Chi Minh was going to win those democratic elections, so they didn't hold them. The North Vietnamese had every right to invade South Vietnam.
