  • My gerbils never really used the sand baths I made for them, they would just sit in them, so I would help run the sand through their fur. xD Very cool!

  • Why do they need dust baths??

  • I love gerbils.

  • my gerbil is freaking out in the sand bad :( he got big space but hes freaking out :( like stressed help

  • @dylan0453 Hmm that seems really strange. That never happened with my gerbils nor have I heard of that happening before. I don't know what to to else tell you besides that taking sand baths is natural for them and I believe the Kaytee Chinchilla Dust Bath is made just for that. If your gerbil seems really stressed, maybe you don't want to do this. Maybe ask your local pet store about it or seek other professional advice from a veterinarian. I'm not an expert but i hope that helps!

  • @dylan0453 make sure it was chichilla sand not chinchilla dust because the dust can cause breathign problems. also it could be that hes just rlly happy lol

  • that looks just like my gerbil :)

  • @SN3AKYCLAN1 very cool :). thx for watching! :)

  • No problem the video was good! And thanks for the advice! ;)

  • @holly8052 You bet! ;) Thanks again! :)

  • @Pfunky2007 When i let my pet gerbil,Coconut take a bath in the sand, all he does is roll around like a dog in a skin digging chain. by the way, i'm only ten

  • @Pfunky2007 your gerbils are ADORABLE!!! and where did you get the sand also what brand is best?? Thankz for uploading your vid!! :)

  • @holly8052 Thank you! :) We got the sand at PetSmart I believe but I think you can also get it at PetCo. It is called Kaytee Chinchilla Dust Bath; that is the only brand I have experience with. They loved it! Thanks for watching! :)

  • @Pfunky2007 your gerbils are ADORABLE!!! :) and where did you get the sand and what brand is best??? Thanks for your vid!

  • Do I have to get this at petco or something!?!

  • @WarnerBrosAdam You can get the Kaytee Dust Bath at both PetCo and PetSmart I believe; I believe both carry gerbils too. Thanks for watching! :)

  • my gerbils loves that!

  • @Warriorcats24 I bet! Ours sure did! ;) Thx for watching! :)

  • @Pfunky2007 Welcome :)

  • So cute

  • @NaratoxME :) Thanks for watching! :)

  • How did u train ur gerbils o do that?

  • @RIRITHEKING Besides simply playing with them and handling them frequently, no training really. They took a liking to the sand and rolling around in it ("bathing") naturally. Thanks for watching! :)

  • Hey. I just wanted to know what kind of sand you used? I know you can actually buy a sand bath in a pet store but my Father has Children's play sad that looks a lot darker than the sand you are using. I am not letting him use this in case it somehow harm's them. What sand or kind of sand did you use?

  • @JennySilvertonx Hi there! We used "Kaytee Chinchilla Dust Bath" which I believe you can pick up at both PETCO and PetSmart. It's very fine and safe to use (at least we used it for over 3 years and it worked great and the gerbils loved it). Thanks for watching! :)

  • @5redbulls29 Hi there! We did not have to train them to go in the sand really. We may have put them in the pan at first but they eventually just started jumping in it every now and then and just start rolling/shaking around in it all funny. It's definitely entertaining watching them in it. They really do come out with a shinier and cleaner-looking coat once they get the sand off. So, we did not really "train" them much but we did handle them/play with them a lot. Thx for watching! :)

  • oh my gosh they r so cute!! aww ^_^

and i have two gerbils, too =]

  • @Mrsyxaxa haha thanks! :) That's great! :) Thanks for watching!

  • Ive got a new gerbills (2) when should i give them a sand bath they are babys

  • @JonesGal14 Hello! Honestly, I don't know how old they have to be before they can take sand baths. You'll have to research that I guess. Our gerbils were a few months old and about fully grown when we got them & by the time we started giving them the sand, they were both several months old. I would think it would be ok for them to take a sand bath as soon as they have fur since they naturally grow up in desert environments; but, I dont know. Thx for watching & let me know what you find out! :)

  • i love the way they respond to your hand <3

  • @missnienie Thanks! They seem to respond more too the longer we've had them and the more time we spent with them. Thanks for watching! :)

  • @cricket1678 I thought you said never to, but ok

  • omg! SOO cute! i <3 gerbils, im getting one tomarrow :)

  • @sexiasschic haha thanks for watching! You'll have a lot of fun with your new gerbil I'm sure! ;)

  • @cricket1678 I was going to buy that for my gerbils. What dust can I use? Please Respond!!

  • TO-DO-LIST

    1: buy sand for gerbils

  • @TheElitedeath haha sounds good! :) Thanks for watching! ;)

  • @TheElitedeath corn meal works the same as sand does, only its much much cheaper.

  • @Theraggy1 Interesting. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching! ;)

  • dis is sooo cute

  • @animalperson112 :) Thanks for watching! :)

  • i wish my older gerbils would bathe like this. they just get into the sand, bounce a bit, but they don't really roll over any more ;) i've got some lazy old gerbils ...

  • @summerday1983 haha. :) The tan one in this video, Mesa, is a little over 3 years old now and doing well still so she/we are pretty fortunate! She still sand bathes every now and then and it's always fun to watch still. Thanks for watching! :)

  • @cricket1678 Hello! Although I do thank you for the information, I want to let you know that we have used Chinchilla Dust Bath for around 3 years and our gerbil is doing very well and is extremely healthy, active, and apparently completely without any respiratory distress whatsoever. I believe both PetSmart and PetCo, two of the nation's largest retail pet store chains, both sell Chinchilla Dust Bath to specifically be used for dust baths for gerbils and such pets. Thanks for watching! :)

  • omg, so adoorable!!

  • lol it become more white than black once it has come out from the bath!! x LOL

  • omg it's funny how they ran to it. It's so much easier to watch this then alittle wet rodent looking exhausted from paddling it's feet to get out of water *relieved*

  • @xUrbanxChIcKeN We use "Kaytee Chinchilla Dust Bath" which I believe you can get at PetSmart and PetCo. I'm not sure if there is other sand you can use or not but there probably is. Thanks for watching! :)

  • psssh, we totally have the same cage

  • @frogb00ts Nice! haha. Thanks for watching! ;)

  • @Pfunky2007 how many times do you wash them a day?

  • @webkinzpinkydoodle99 We don't wash them everyday and they don't sand bathe every day either. They probably take their "sand bath" every week or two or whenever we feel like having fun with it and bringing it out. ;) You can tell where their coats get a little oily/matted and that is usually when we clean them with cloths or bring out the sand for them to get into. Thanks for watching! :)

  • You can get it at any pet store for about five $ or around 10 £ its called chinchilla sand (most commonly) and it cleans there fur I recommend not putting it in your pets cage because it will mix with the bedding and mot work. instead you probable want to do what they did in this video. Don't worry the gerbils luv it and will naturally roll around in it

  • @EmsTheWierdShow Thanks for sharing the great info Ems and thanks for watching! :)

  • Where do you get that sand?

  • @ilovehammy2000 see emstheweirdshow's comment. ;) I agree with everything she says there. I believe we have gotten chinchilla dust bath before at both PetSmart and PetCo but I'm sure you can get it at any pet store that sells gerbils. I would also recommend keeping it outside the cage to keep it out of their food and such. Thanks for watching! :)

  • can you use park sand??

  • @ilovehammy2000 hmm...honestly, I have no idea but I would assume it would be o.k. as long as it was clean. The only thing we've used has been the Chinchilla Dust Bath from PetSmart or PetCo. ;)

  • damn i hate it when i see a video where someone has gerbils in water it's so annoying and cruel! good that you use sand :D

  • Ha, thanks! I'm sure hamsters are fun too. ;) Thanks for watching! :)

  • AWH! ADORABLENESS! I have a hamster though ^^

  • Is there any money in gerbil breeding? I want to start side jobs that I can make money off of and I love gerbils. I havn't had any for years.

  • @darklight203 Sorry, you're asking the wrong guy. I don't know anything whatsoever about gerbil breeding and neither does my girlfriend. Good luck though and thanks for watching! :)

  • at 0:23 i thought his tail fell off. :P

  • @TheHelpHamster haha. thanks for watching! ;)

  • AWWWWWWW!!!! this is sad. i had two gerbils both black ad white like yours but poor snowball passed away.

  • @PuppyPawz83 Sorry to hear about your gerbil; they are most definitely missed once they pass. Thanks for watching! :)

  • booooooo hoooooo this makes me think of my old gerbil she died on my 5 grade graduation

  • @cheerfullant Sorry to hear that! Gerbils are definitely a fun pets and easy to get attached to. Thanks for watching ;)

  • my gerbil died i miss him :(

  • @LegoNationAnimations Sorry to hear that! This one, Palooza, just died actually back in November. We miss her too! They are fun pets and easy to get attached to. Thanks for watching- ;)

  • @Pfunky2007 they r fun and amusing the way the move fast and scurry

  • @LegoNationAnimations haha, yeah, i agree! ;)

  • do u have to throw away the sand after the bath? Yes, stupid question but im just wonderin ._.

  • @gracepower98 not a stupid question. ;) we usually use the same sand every few (3-4?) times. I'm not an expert with gerbils and sand baths or anything but I wouldn't think you necessarily have to change it every single time they bathe in it. I suppose just change it whenever you feel like the time is right or if it looks like it needs to be changed. I suppose after they've used it few times or if they use it as a toilet, I would change it. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching! :)

  • @Pfunky2007 Thank you (: and your gerbils are very cute :D

  • @gracepower98 You bet; and thanks! :) :)

  • Aww cute!!

  • @Jumper1496 haha. ;) Thanks for watching! :)

  • Isn't this sand too dusty? when he rolled the first time, he was covered by dust. You have to watch out the sand isn't too dusty, has too small particles, otherwise they will inhale it. The best is to look for chinchilla sand and not chinchilla dust!

    Just telling :)

  • @InZaie Something to remember is that anytime the gerbils roll in any kind of sand/dust, of course they will be covered in it, just like takes place in their natural environment. ;) The Chinchilla Dust Bath is specifically for gerbils & the like & 100% o.k. to use. We have been using it for well over a year now and it has not caused either gerbil any problems. One of our gerbils is 2.5 years old & the other is about 1.5 years old and going on strong! Thx for your input and thx for watching! :)

  • I have the same pan! lol

  • @rycygan925 haha nice! it works great for this! ;) thanks for watching! :)

  • Heya Ive recently got 2 gerbil and have the sand and everything, Ive put it twice in their cage one takes an intrest but they dont seem to know what to do with it.

Is there anyway that i could encourage them how to roll in it. They seem to burrow in it.

P.s how often should they have one x x x

    WBS x ta

  • @tealyboy ...Maybe just have the sand available and I would think eventually that they would just start using it correctly. ? Good luck and thanks for watching! :)

  • @tealyboy hmm...well, our gerbils just seem to have the instinct to do it. normally they just go right at it and do their thing. as a matter of fact, they usually do it a lot more than they do in this video; but of course, on the day we actually tried filming them "bathing", we had a hard time catching them doing it/getting them to do it & im not sure how to get them to. we let ours out into the sand every day or 2. usually, we just have the pan out and available when we let them out to play..

  • @Pfunky2007 Thanks just gonna let them do their thing hopefully one day they'll roll around in it and not try to eat it or make it spit out of the dish lolz x x

  • @tealyboy ha sounds good. they'll come around. ;) good luck! :):)

  • Do you buy the sand at the store? Or does any regular sand work?

  • @RDdaNINJA We buy Chinchilla Dust Bath at the pet store. I do not know if regular sand would work or not but I would have to guess that it would be fine as long as it was clean. The grains in the dust bath are much finer than regular sand so it is different than most regular sand. Thanks for watching! :)

  • @Pfunky2007 Oh, cool. THanks for the info =)

  • I will be having a gerbil soon and i just want to know, when the gerbils have finished having a bath do i keep the dust or do i have to throw it away

  • @pjamestrella Hello! Well, I believe my g/f keeps the same dust for a few baths (Id guess 3-5 "baths" or more) & then eventually changes it because they "do their business" in the dust bath sometimes (which you can clean out of the dust bath & still leave the rest of the clean sand for them to use for a while). I suppose you just use your own judgement on how clean it is after a while. The dust bath sand also comes in a big bag so you won't run out too quickly or anything. Thx for watching! :)

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but at 0:07, it looked as though the little critter was eating the dust. They both look as though they are very well taken care of and must bring hours of fun to you.

  • It does look like that's what she is trying to do there. They are very definitely well taken care of & you're right, hours of fun! ha. you can just sit there forever sometimes and stare at them, watching them do their thing. ha. remember, the sand is there NATURAL habitat, they are from the deserts of Africa. The sand/dust bathing is completely safe for them & natural. Their instinct is to roll around in it, clean themselves like they normally would, and enjoy it. Thx again 4 watching! :)

  • Doesn't this get into their eyes? We're looking at getting a couple of the little critters and are researching what's involved in taking care of them. I know gerbils bathe by rolling around in dust like that but I'd be worried they'd get this stuff in their eyes. Adorable little fuzzballs you've got.

  • Hi! That's great/wise you are doing your research before making the purchase! Gerbils do not have problems getting dust into their eyes from the sand baths. Gerbils natural origin is the sandy deserts of African & rolling around in sand is how they naturally clean themselves in their natural habitat. My girlfriend (a PetSmart manager) has done a lot of reading/studying up on gerbils, which is how we found out about the sand/dust bathing that they do. The pet stores sell the bathing dust/sand...

  • ...specifically for these little critters to bathe in. :) They seem to really enjoy it and when they are done their coats are visibly a lot cleaner--less oily and not matted. Thanks for the compliment on the gerbils and thanks for watching! :):)

  • Gerbils do not come from Africa but from the Mongolian desert which is in Asia. Whereas there are several rodent species that are similar to the Mongolian gerbil (which you have here in your video) that originate in Africa, this is not one of them.

  • Interesting! Thank you for the info and thanks for watching! :)

  • omq that is soo cute my qerbils look exactly like that and they're the same color black and honey :)

  • haha cool. thanks! and thanks for watching! :):)

  • Cute. I'm getting gerbils in a month or so. I've read you should only let them bathe in sand, not dust. Is this true?

  • We use what is called "Chinchilla Dust Bath" by the "Kaytee" brand and we get it at PetSmart. We have used it for a quite a while now and after doing research we've come to the conclusion that it should be just absolutely just fine for them to use. :) My girlfriend is a manager at PetSmart and has also spent a lot of time researching/reading up on gerbils. :) You're going to have a lot of fun with your new gerbils! ;)

  • Aww cute
