  • Thanks for your comment. My feeling is whatever gives you a consistent motion that allows you to strike the ball at the top of the toss and to the right of the head (for righties) will work. I feel that dropping the racquet gives the swing momentum, and bringing it straight up makes you whip your arm more. If you can do it and feel comfortable, go for it. A few pros hit this way, and sometimes copying a pro that you like to watch will inspire you to hit the ball harder as well.

  • this is a good video, Actually even easier is to bring racquet straight up instead of dropping it during this toss. HEre is how. holding ball and racquet in front of you, toss ball and at same time take butt of racquet to sky and then just hit "throw" the ball. ball needs to be tossed to your right side where the ball would be thrown.

  • great video, do u have one for returning the serve because im a begginer and need some HELP?? :)

  • @sneezed7

A good way to practice the return is to have someone serve to you and to hit crosscourt returns each time. So, if you are in the deuce court, if you are a righty you hit the forehand crosscourt and the backhand down-the-line. In the ad court, you hit the forehand down-the-line and the backhand crosscourt. This makes you return earlier--if you are late the ball still goes in. Work on the early return, directing the ball to a certain area of the court each time. It makes you focus.

  • LOL this is wrong

  • If you watched the entire video, you will see that I start out saying that at first you throw the ball low and then by the end as high as possible to get a powerful serve. The reason I start my students with a low serve is to get them out of their previous bad habits that prevent them from a natural throwing motion. Once you "get" the throwing motion and the whip of the arm and racquet, then you gradually throw the ball higher until you reach up for the ball with the fully extended toss.

  • For making a more powerfull serve you need to throw the ball highier so you can hit with your arm straight

    This is not basebal!

  • You're a great coach Dan :)

  • Great question! In the end, it comes down to which arm you feel gives you the best whoosh when you make a service motion (without the ball). If the answer is your left, you can easily transfer the racquet to the other hand after the serve. If it is the right, you keep doing what you have been doing. If the answer is both arms give you a good whoosh, you can serve to the deuce court with the right hand and the ad court with the left. A few top players have done this successfully. Good luck!

  • @Coachdantennis I just started tennis and i cant tell you how many matches i've now won because i can now serve. Lol

  • Coach Dan, I throw baseballs with my left arm and I have recreationally played tennis for about 5 years now with my right arm. Should I change my tennis arm or just keep going like this?

  • Thanks for you comment. I'm sure there are a 100 different aspects of the video that can be picked apart, but then it isn't "The Tennis Serve Made Simple". Let's stick with 1) get the throwing motion down 2) toss the ball low at first and then 3) toss the ball higher in order to keep it simple.

  • the only thing i would say is (1) when he tosses up the ball it is very important to toss it much slower and more smoother. he's got much more of a "jerky" quick "rushed looking toss. toss up the ball a little slower with ur left arm slightly extended up more while u toss the ball. Because he is so quick and jerky and ball toss is a little too low in tossing up the ball it doesnt give him any time and he looks like he is rushed. "i like low ball tosses, but he should extend his left arm higher.

  • Hi Krishna. Each country has it's tennis centers and way of teaching the game. The best place to learn tennis is where you feel comfortable and able to give your best performance. That could be anywhere. There are a few great players that have come out of India, so I know there are places to play and learn in the country. There is no "late" age to start tennis--at 14 you are starting to be strong enough to hit the ball hard. If you hit hard and know how to keep the ball in play, you are set.

  • @Coachdantennis Thanks a lot coach Dan.

  • I'm glad it worked for you! I'm hoping to follow up this year with a volley video.

  • This helped me tremendousley! I'm much more consistent with the minimal approach! Baseball was my sport growing up si I feel at home with this technique

  • Your a wonderful teacher!! Your awesome

  • will i grow taller if i play tennis regularly ?

  • This is an interesting video about the throwing motion. If you have a specific problem on the throwing motion, I would recommend it. My goal though, as the title states, is to make the tennis serve simple. I feel that if you break down too many parts of the serve in minute detail: the throwing motion, the toss, the grip, the hit, the follow-through, the position of the feet, etc. it ceases to be a simple shot.

  • you guys should also check this out in youtube

type science of ball throw in youtube search engine.

  • Ron looks creepy staring at the camera!

  • @quidam88 So you are saying you can tell that Ron is not a professional actor? You should see him golf though....

  • Total creeper.

  • You are a very good teacher.

    Thanks for the video

  • Thanks for the comment, and I agree with you on the toss for the final stroke. But I am talking here about forming a whip arm motion in order to get the maximum power out of the serve. To develop the whip arm, you should start by tossing the ball low and then gradually toss it higher. At the end of my video (if you saw it to the end), you will hear me encourage you to get the toss higher.

  • u want a high toss and u want to hit the top of the tennis ball down wards on to the court. low toss is bad.

  • @stupify2111 A careful study of the dynamics will show that it is impossible for a human to hit the ball down and still clear the net. Doesn't matter how tall you are, how high you toss, how hard you hit. This perception is VERY common, but it is entirely subjective. When we measure what is happening, we see that the mechanics are very different. Every serve that ever cleared the net was hit upwards. It might not feel that way when you do it, but that is what's happening.

  • I am concentrating on the upper body in this video, the working of the arms together, the toss, etc. For my students, I try to take them out of their usual serve routine by making them just hit the ball with the throwing motion and slapping the serve from the side. When it comes time to put it all together, of course I make sure their feet stay in place. Get the upper body first, the feet are second.

  • What a great video-now I can successfully foot fault on every serve.

  • You are right, the continental is the way I was taught and most people teach the serve with that grip. But I hit my serve with the handshake grip so I can mix the flat serve in and the opponent doesn't get tipped off on which serve is coming. In the end, it is your comfort level that is important. Either grip will work.

  • @Coachdantennis OK thanks.

  • Good pointers. The only thing I question though is the eastern (hand shake) grip you instructed us to use for the basic serve. Just about every other instructor/seasoned player says to use continental grip for not only spin serves but for the basic serve also. This way we would have to pronate (turn) the wrist which helps the ball gain speed and fly downwards.

  • damn im learning and i am having fun and laughing damn!thanks dan!XD

  • great tutorial, i will try this tomorrow! thanks!

  • this sux horribly

  • Way to go Danny-excuse me-Coach Dan
