@knowatimean Tiny was a decent player but he wasn't having a good season. Both Cowens and Pistol Pete were old and at the end of the careers. I mean you can say the Celtics had Hall of Famers but they obviously weren't doing shit because they finished last. Bird came in as a rookie and brought them to the Eastern Conference Finals. He brought the biggest single season turnaround in NBA history without Parish or McHale Magic had the league MVP...Kareem. Bird did more with less his rookie year.

i have this documentary on VHS, i grew up watching basketball in the early 90s so i could never watch bird actually play in his prime, BUT to me bird comes right after MJ. and when it comes to basketball I.Q. nobody was ever greater than larry legend.

It's odd that people argue who was better when either player would name the other in retrospect regardless of what they believed. And their skills/size/style of play were almost identical. Magic had a bit more flash, but Bird was known for no look passes, game winning 3 pointers when his team was down by only one point, and played like Pistol Pete with a better coach who kept him under control.

Bird's rookie of the year was well deserved. I have heard people say Magic should have got it, Magic had a great year. Although Bird took them from last place with a record of 28-54 to competing with Philly for the Eastern conference finals with a record of 60-22, the biggest single season turnaround in NBA history. CAn I just say, I've just finnished watching MAgic's showtime vid on youtube and it is my opinion that for the greatest part of his career he was surrounded by the best in the NBA playing on that laker team. Lol Kareem was still scoring very well and was a big part of the Lakers and Magics success. No doubt Magic was the edge they needed to win a championship. But to say Mchale,Parish,Walton were at the same level as Kareem,Worthy,Byron Scott.

As for Walton I always felt he was over rated but hey each to their own. Both Magic and Bird were fantastic so it's not a thrown in the side if someone thinks one is better then the other.

It's impossible to do a comparison of Kareem, Worthy VS Mchale, Parish, Walton based on individual statistics because they were on different teams with different needs. Worthy was perfect for Magics running style whereas Mchale, Parish, and Walton were HOF low post players with excellent passing skills. I won't even throw Byron Scott in the mix because he was a solid role player comparable to dennis johnson or danny ainge and that is moot.

As far as underrated I would call Parish underrated because he was a capable scorer but toned down his game significantly to play alongside Bird, focusing on defense and rebounding. On that team he was the third or maybe fourth option and he relished his role.

Kareem was just Kareem.  He would have had his stats on any team and any situation because his hook shot was basically unguardable. But Worthy was Worthy because of Magic.

Anyway the main point is: the Celtics were designed around Larry Bird to fit his game and the Lakers were somewhat designed around Magic Johnson to fit his (I say somewhat because most of the major pieces were in place before MJ got to LA and I truly believe MJ could play with anyone.) If you were to swap the teams around these two players I doubt they would have had the success that they did.

That is not true, first of all Kareem was 33 when Magic came into the league. Second he led the Bucks to a championship in 1971. He also won a finals MVP in 1985, old enough to still dominate. Do some research before you write.
