  • Shes mad

  • well.damn how much air did she breath in...lol

  • Not as much as it seems! It's just muscle work.

  • I think I did good!

  • Hi, Im a Tinner and i really didn't really understand about the leaky tire and im skinny but fat in the stomach area and it really hurts when i try to sing loud beacause my voice is trying to change and i was trying to sing"all i want for christmas instrumenatl lyrics" and it just dries my throat and hurts Could you help me??? thanks

  • Hi,

Have you watched my dog pant video yet? That helps to show what happens with the stomach area when the breathing is natural and how you can increase your voice power by increasing your breath power.

  • is 30 seconds good ?

  • I started at 30 seconds and within about 10 minutes i'm up to 49!!

  • Awesome!

  • why does mine sound like a boiling pot instead of a squeaky tire?

  • I posted a comment earlier and found it easier to do this on my back. The air IS coming out of the small gap between my two front teeth. my hissing sounds more like a "squeekie clean" and sometimes I need the help of my tongue(the tip) and my lips to make sure the air wont leak.

  • Thank you for your videos. I thinks its amazing that you answer questions. when I do this exorcise, do I let the air out of the "gap between" my two front teeth or is that where I am trying to guide the stream of air? I get the hissing great but the stream of air is not coming from the gap between my two front teeth. My stream of air is right right under the gap. Any suggestions are wonderful, I hope you understand what I am trying to say. THANKS for EVERYTHING!

  • this is a reply to my own comment, but... it helps A LOT for me to do this on my back and then when I get the stream, I'll sit up and try to keep it as long as I can. I do the dog pant twice for one minute and I do the slow leaky tire twice as long as I can after the dog pant... four sets of each everyday!!!

  • i love you so much your so funny in a good way its so easy to learn from you!

    xx

  • thank you :)

  • You are most welcome! I hope you'll tell all your friends about these videos.

  • does smokin kill a persons singing voice

  • Doesn't kill it but it's definitely not good for it. The other problem with smoking is the high risk of cancer. I don't want to scare you but I'd sure like to encourage you to kick the habit if you smoke.

  • ohh holy crap you can breathe out really long!! lol

  • Trust me, I worked hard at learning how to control my breath to get the most out of my voice so I encourage you to work hard too!

  • Thanks you for your generousity in sharing these very neat techniques. I've been searching for these videos. you rock!!!

  • ive been doing alot of ur diaphragm techniques

but instead of my stomache going out when i breath in its when i breath out.. wat should i do?? also. if ur diaphragm gets stronger would that make the voice richer cause when i sing i cant reallly make it like more rich its just like a flat sound.?? i have a lot of questions :]

  • Better breath control (stronger diaphragm and knowing how to control it) will produce a better voice. Try this: lie flat on your back with your hands at your sides. Uncross your legs. Just breath. Don't think about what you should or shouldn't do. Let the muscles do what they naturally do. Now rest your hands over your belly and just breath. Observe what happens. Next, put a book where your hands were and breath again. What happens?

  • o ok thanks

ya i think i kno how to breath now xD

    haha thanks you.and um..

do u happen to know any good vocal coaches

    around the dc area?? :D

  • Thanks. Sorry, but at this time I don't make recommendations for voice teachers. That may change in the future, however.

  • finally, I "developped" my vibrato... wee! Now the hard thing is to be consistant. But the fruits of my efforts are showing! Thanks alot for your generousity.

  • I've been doing these exercices for about 4 weeks, i breathe in the correct way but i'm not sure how to breath OUT! should i only control the flow with my abdominal muscles? it seems very hard on the muscles to control everything.

Should the abdominal region remain tight while exhaling? should they slowly go inward from the very bottom (like a toothpaste tube) to the the upper parts?

  • Great questions. There's an odd thing in singing that requires both tension and relaxation at the same time, both with breathing and phonation (making sound). The main thing with the exhale is to let it out evenly, without large bursts all at once. This requires control but not locking your abdominal area with tension. Check my article called Joy's Breathing on my website. There's a fantastic link there that shows the diaphragm in motion from the Stough Institute that can help you.

  • Thanks so much for the helpful videos. Great work!

  • You betcha!

  • hi! i tried doing this and i can do it fine but i was wondering could you listen to me singing and could you tell me what i need to improve on..thankyou. please leave a comment on my profile. :D

  • Hi. I only answer from this site, sorry about that. But I did watch your video (the visual part didn't play though). Here are a couple of pointers: work on getting your pitches absolutely clear. Scales will help. Also, it's easy to pop the "p" sound into a mike when singing, so watch out for that.

  • Am I glad to see this!! You're doing a wonderful job on this!

    Erm...I have a question...could you answer it?

Although I'm hitting the right note, the sound that comes out isn't sharp and clear. I don't know what's wrong.

  • Hey, thanks. Hmmm, does it feel muffled?

  • Yes...well at least it does when I record myself singing and listen to it.

  • This is a really important observation. What our voice sounds like to us inside of our heads is very different from it sounds like in the outside world. If you haven't already done so, read the articles that I have on my website redesign section and try applying the info from them & recording yourself to see if anything makes a difference.

  • Okay I will. Thanks for your help. :)

I don't have any music lessons in my grade so it really helps.

  • No music lessons? I'm really sorry to hear of it but I'm really happy to be helping you, especially since you like musical theater.

  • :) Thanks. Btw, i'm going to record my singing and upload it on youtube...would you check it ou for me??? It'll really help if you do. Thanks for everything. :)

  • Tried going to your site but the Phantom graphics wouldn't let it load quickly enough for me to look at it. Sorry about that.

  • Oh I'm sorry about that. I'm going to upload it soon so when I do, I'll comment you on your page. :)

  • hi! i tried dis and i dont hear a hissing sound lyk u did...do u have to make a hissing sound??

  • Yes...

  • My shoulders should not move should they?

  • You're right. They shouldn't move. If your shoulders pull upwards, it can tense up the vocal area.

  • wow...i have a good voice but need lessons. i cant find a good teacher so until then ill just do these exersizes! how often should i do these exersizes?

  • Do them as often as you feel comfortable doing them. Sometimes close your eyes and just feel what's going on around your vocal cords, your jaw and tongue. Keep as relaxed as possible and totally enjoy!

  • Hey, you are a great teacher! you are fun and i can understand what you say easily. Cheers!

  • Thanks and tell all your friends! Don't forget to use my website too, for more info and help.

  • wow these videos really do help out all sorts of musicians... this is exactly what i need, i have a great voice but i have trouble breathing and their are just some notes i cannot carry...

  • Glad to be of assistance. I hope you'll go to my website and ready about breathing there. Oh, and be sure to tell your family and friends about these things! Thanks.

  • Bestest, thanks for all the wicked resorces on here... one question: when your breathing is it the pendulum area "only" that moves? I keep changing the way im breathing after reading so many different online articals, get the feeling this is gonna cost me money soon. & BTW you'd make a great kids TV show (such a friendly character) Thanks alot baby

  • Thanks for your encouragement! About the breathing, here's a way to approach it that may help: lie flat on your back with your hands at your sides. Uncross your legs. Just breath. Don't think about what you should or shouldn't do. Let the muscles do what they naturally do. Now rest your over your belly and breath. Observe what happens. Next, put a book where your hands were and breath again. What happens?

  • I seriously need your help,I want lessons!!! I've always dreamnt of being a Rockstar when I grown up,but my parents wont let me take singing lessons

  • Try keeping up with all of these video lessons and be sure to read all you can possibly read on my website. Lots of resources there. Sorry to hear your folks won't let you take lessons. Is it a money issue?

  • Reminds me of the breathing exercises I used to do while in school choir.. haha..

  • Sounds like you had a good teacher! I hope you'll keep doing them for the rest of your life!

  • You're the greatest =)

  • Aw, thanks! Hope you're getting help with your voice and are making good use of the resources on my website!

  • You seem like a very nice person. Eres una persona muy simpática. Love you. Keep doing this

  • Gracias!

  • No no no... Wait! I've got it... She can't differentiate between singing and speaking! That's what kills me. Pretty fuckin' funny if you ask me. Ah well... music teachers are mostly excentric anyway so...

  • Actually, you're almost right. Singing is actually speaking but about 1,000 times refined, according to Lamperti.

  • Slaps forehead. And you know, you can use your lips in a whistling like configuration and save about 4 mins. Jesus... It's like, she tries to be sexy or something and then it just gets weirder and weirder and weirder... My friends and I had a good laugh though. LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOO It's on repeat!

  • I'm glad it was good for a laugh for you and your friends.

  • woa!! love ya!!

you make things that i didnt understand a piece of cake! thanks!

  • What a nice comment! Thanks.

  • love you! love you! love you!!!!

  • thank you! thank you! thank you!!!!

  • my vocals are terrible, is there hope for someone with a crow voice like me? :)

  • There's always hope, but don't be too hard on yourself. I've heard every kind of voice you can imagine and there's not one that I haven't been able to help.

  • Joy I love you!!

I´m dizzy now, but I love you!

  • Fantastic! Keep the dizzy going....it makes life worth living!

  • shut up and sing already.

  • Rude dude.

  • joy i can hold leaky tire for 15 sec is it bad

  • Sorry to take so long to get back to you. No, that's not bad, but I know you'll learn to do more. Try to go 1 extra second each time you do it and you'll be amazed how much you'll improve. Also, read my article, "Travel Breathing" on my website. It can help you too.

  • you're an angel sent from above! keep up the good work...

  • Aw, thanks. You're most kind and I'll do all I can to keep helping others!

  • O God ..'singbabysing' thanks for doing this...this lessons stuff..cuz i really wanna learn to sing better....i love you honestly:):):)...thanks again..Bye

  • Thanks for your enthusiasm. I'll help all I can, so please help me by telling your friends and family about singbabysing and encourage them to go to my website too. Be sure to read all the articles on my website because they will help you a lot!

  • can you sing us a song?

  • I posted a response several days ago, but once again, YouTube lost it! Argh! I'm thinking about this one.

  • LMAO this is funny, ur a nice entertaiment :D

  • Thanks!

  • Great video. How long should I spend a day on breathing exercises ?

    Thanks in advance

  • Great question. It depends on your level of training. If you're just beginning, start with 10-15 minutes per day, perhaps breaking that up into 5 minute segments throughout the day. If that seems easy for you, bump it up to 20-30 minutes in 10 minute increments.

    Vocalizations the same.

  • hi pretty Joy,u know sometimes im able to sing with proper technique(the feeling's reali wonderful!),but some other times i juz straight out choke! meaning i just can't feel anytime going right. Why is this so?I don't think its whether i warmed up,cuz i cld sing alright even w/o warmups..urghh help?

  • Does this happen when you change pitch, going higher or lower? Resonance is affected by the frequency of the pitches too.

  • it happens even for the slightest of pitches. its like maybe for about 5minutes im able to sing wif ease, then after that or the next day i seem to 'forget' how to sing. Very inconsistent i would say.

  • Also, the more you know about the actual muscles that are being used, the better you will be able to visualize them. Check out the anatomy page on my site and watch for new info there because I'm working on an article that addresses these types of problems.

  • Joy...when are you going to do a video on vibrato? Im longing for a video like that.

  • Hopefully soon, but vibrato's really a natural thing that evolves out of the concepts I've been posting. Simply put, it needs an open throat(relaxed tongue, jaw, throat)and good breath control. A 'straight tone' (no vibrato)produces undo stress on the vocal cords because they have to be tightened to hold back the natural oscillation of the cords. Work on the 'ng' ringing sound and the 'Slow Leaky Tire' and totally relax your tongue, jaw and throat areas.

  • sigh, ive tried almost everything but im still unbelievably straight tone.

  • Don't lose heart. Are you working with a private teacher? And forgive me if you've stated this before. I wish YouTube had a better way of organizing comments.

  • Yes im working with a private teacher, he told me not to focus on getting a vibrato. And he told me to just pretend like im saying the same vowels thousands of times but still connecting it.

  • I'd suggest putting more energy into being aware of what's going on in your belly and your throat when you inhale and exhale. The tension that prevents natural vibrato starts in the abdominal region where the diaphragm is and in the throat where the vocal cords are. Try doing your exercises lying flat on your back with uncrossed arms/legs and palms up.

  • you forgot the extra long.

  • Oops. Not sure what you mean by that, but I cut the video into 2 parts. What is the extra long?
