An odd thing about this scene is that once Kirk is considering leaving the Nexus, he talks about Spock.
...But. One of the reasons why Generations DOESN'T work as a film is that it doesn't assume any knowledge of the series in it's audience. It's a shame that Picard doesn't mention that Spock is alive, (In Picard's time, he's been in TNG in several episodes)
Kirk would then have a strong personal reason to leave: Someone who is his friend, remembers him, and that he wants to see again.
@JonnyCashmore Actually for all Gene protesting "The federation has no money" it does. They have Credits but they are not used for day to day use. Most times they are used when dealing with non federation aliens (like on DS9), and the TOS enterprise cost 50 billion credits.
Gene didn't want the UFP to have money but in a galaxy with non-UFP aliens and trade going on, the idea of absolutely no money was considered to be stupid, hence why DS9 had starfleet paying for drinks.
@JonnyCashmore Well no shit sherlock. Of course I couldn't have been talking about the in universe lore for the show and books, noooo... Here was me thinking they'd found a way to travel to another universe and they where filming the daily lives of a universe where star trek exists.
Next you'll spouting your wisdom that garfields not real because he's a cartoon fucking cat.
This was a good movie and I enjoyed it. Yet I allways found it annoying how Picard tries to point out to Kirk or anyone else that what they experience in the Nexus is not Real, I mean as long as they are happy there who cares if it is real or not. who the Hell is Picard to say differently. He should mind his own bussiness. People have a right to be happy.
Lol, I think this would have been better if rather than having Kirk die, Spock swoops in and saves him. Then they live out their lives together as best friends, or lovers if you look at them that way. =/ Kirks death made me SO depressed, it was like loosing a brother.
@MrImastinker , Picard should have minded his own bussiness, If Kirk or anyone else is happy in the Nexus wiether it is real or not then they have a right to be happy, it's Not Picard's bussiness to tell people how to live their life.
I agree. Kirk has already stayed in the nexus for a while, during the whole Next Generation series, before Picard has shown up. Everything is being shown in the present time while Kirk presumed dead is still staying in the Nexus. Kirk is unaware of the Nexus. Has has been there for many decades.
in the first 15 minutes of the movie, kirk virtually takes over command of the enterprise b, outdoes captain harrimon, finds a way to rescue as many el aurian survivors as possible and give his life to make sure the enterprise escapes the nexus
what does picard do between that and when he meets Kirk in this movie? he cries, figures out soran's plan, talks to him and gets beaten up by him
if picard was the real hero, he would've been the one dying to defeat soran and his plan
@elcap22 He beat Soran's rocket and stopped his plan. He suckered Soran into blowing himself up. Not to mention he avoided getting a bridge dropped on him.
What is wrong with you people? This movie was terrible. Poor dialogue, nonsensical story arc, and plot holes aplenty. Can you please be less Shatner fanboys and use an ounce of objectivity? Please?
Kirk is not stupid. Picard is more polished whereas Kirk is not. Both have different personas and I think it's altogether unfair to compare one person to another because everyone is different an unique in their own way.
I dont get it didnt the Nexus allow you to go anywhere at any point in time? If I was Picard i would have just gone back to the point were Worf was being promoted. I would issue red alert and head to the space station at maximum warp catch the klingons off guard, arrest Soran, and confiscate his weapons. There movie finished not much of a story but as Spock would say its the logical thing to do.
@jmp678 well, jmp, he was living the good life, eating what he wanted and such and wasnt working out the way he used to so then paramount calls and says we need you back for a star trek movie so he came back and they tried to shot the scene tastefully so it didnt reveal to much. He was happy with himself and why not?
@Dragonchaos666: The whole movie. This whole long boring waste of a plotless movie. The whole cynical attitude of Hollywood that so long as you have a movie w/ a big title, you don't have to even try b/c the suckers will buy your ticket even if it sucks. By snakes, I meant the producers of this movie.
I actually like that Shatner is playing Kirk in his own element. He knows how to chop wood for real. And can ride a horse VERY well. To show what a hands on real world person he was. Almost a cowboy action hero who straddled a starship and wrote his name in history by the boldly chasing what he loved the way he wanted. A person you could touch, and still look up to like a god. A kind of leader that was comfortable with taking on responsibilities too heavy a burden for lesser men. While smiling.
00:57 The look on Picard's face...you get tell he is in awe being in the presence of a Star Fleet legend, and probably someone he considers a personal hero.
You know what I just asked myself, upon seeing this clip... why did Kirk think of joining Antonia? What was so special about her, when he had so many other women in his life? Ruth... Meramoni, Carol Marcus, Edith Keeler... the list goes on and on... lol...
I always thought that Edith Keeler was the love of his life. He was so heartbroken when she was run over in the 30s.
@MrFungus420 Okay I'm sorry. That was a little rude. My point was neither one necessarily bailed the other out, they really were just working together, taking on something neither one of them could handle alone.
@MrFungus420 The debate is not settled with that! Kirk was indeed a very good problem-solver. But unlike Picard, he wasn't able to figure out the Nexus. He was completely disoriented until Picard straightened him up. Of course, Picard had an edge - he learned about the Nexus before, from Guinan. But still - when Picard was transported into the Nexus, into his personal heaven, he saw a Riddle. Kirk just chopped wood. Kirk kicks ass, but he isn't a brilliant mind like Picard. I'd call it a tie.
@MrFungus420 You did not pay any attention to the video, they are both stuck in time, and they both needed one another to get out. Kirk did not even know , because he is a idiot. Picard as the leader he is had to push him to notice.
God, I love this scene. The best part of a mediocre film, imho. Just reflects what we know about Kirk's character so well. "No beach to walk on," etc. And the part of the theme tune played at the end when Kirk makes his decision. Just brilliant.
Girlfriend of James T. Kirk for about two years during his temporary retirement. Antonia and Kirk met in 2282 while they were both riding horses in Iowa outside Kirk's uncle's barn. They came to live together in a mountain cabin on Earth. In 2284, Kirk decided he would return to Starfleet. and before breaking the news to Antonia, he tried to soften the blow by fixing her breakfast — consisting of toast and Ktarian eggs with dillweed . As a parting gift, he gave her a horseshoe with a red bow tie
@BALTAZARFAP ..................Kirk had a chance to relive part of his experience with Antonia during his brief visit to the Nexus temporal anomaly. He decided this time things would be different, and was determined to propose to her. But the experience was not real, and he left the Nexus to meet his destiny.
@BassmanII I know that, lol, I don't think Star Trek would be one of my favoprtie things if I didn't know that about the actors. I'm just glad they brought it into the movie. I think it adds a lot of character to them both.
William Shatner is having such a great time in these scenes that his face just lights up. Too bad the film overall didn't have that same energy and quality.
Kirk and Picard's meeting is The Most Disappointing Moment in Trek History...
IT'S JAMES TIBERIUS KIRK AND JEAN-LUC PICARD!!!
I mean, this SHOULD have been the most amazing moment, it's THEM... this is like if King Arthur met Robin Hood. But they just TALK... and ABOU NOTHING! A few good lines... but there should've been SO MUCH MORE...
And Kirk!... IN A SHACK? NO! If this puts you where you want most, he'd be on the OLD ENTERPRISE BRIDGE!
@dappleddakota AHA YEA AND WHEN HES TALKING TO WHOOPI IN THE BEGINNIG HES LIKE ID LIKE TO GOTO THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN IN VERIDIAN 3 JUST BEFORE SAURON DESTROYED THE STAR I HAVE TO STOP HIM LOLOL (BTW I KNOW HE DOESNT SAY SAURON BUT HIS ACCENT SOUNDS LIKE IT)
Picard: "Help us stop Sauron. Together, we will traverse the universe through the Nexus to Middle Earth, and we will enter Mordor. We will toss the One Ring into the fires of Mt. Doom, and prevent him from destroying that star."
Kirk: "You know, if Spock were here, he'd tell me I was an illogical human being for thinking that I could simply walk into Mordor. Sounds like fun!"
@tony7star As much as I think a lot of this scene was a missed opportunity (the biggest in Trek history) THAT is probably the best moment, and it's a great one...
"I was out saving the galaxy when your grandfather was in diapers- besides which, I think the galaxy owes me one."
And if it ever DID owe someone one, it'd be James T. Kirk!
(The other great part I like is the end, Picard's "Come back with me, help me stop Soran- make a difference AGAIN!" Could've been so heroic, but...)
@tony7star Kirk didnt face as formidable aliens as Picard and Janeway.. Picard had to deal with the borg, Q. And Captain Janeway had to deal with the borg and species 8472, the caretaker, Q etc. I think Kirk was the novis compared to them.
@NumberDne But Kirk dealt with his foes just as well as any other captain dealt with theirs.
Besides, Kirk specialized in making computer kill themselves. All he'd have to do to defeat the Borg would be to get in contact with the computer part of them, and BOOM!
@NumberDne If Kirk had access to such advanced ships to command that the other two captains did, he would have done just as good if not better. You can't tell me that Admiral Halsey couldn't command a fleet in todays Navy.
@NevadaWrangler Good point but then we will never know how Kirk would have performed in the modern age of starfleet. His whole life's journey may have taken a different course,..... ahh, but then i guess that also applies to Janeway and Picard in the reverse. Yep i concede.
@NumberDne Oh... right? And I guess Trelane or Apollo the God weren't formidable... V'Ger wasn't formidable? Get watch TOS and all the original episodes before you say things liek that.
Absolutely, but that would be too much of a common-sense ending for Rick Berman, and it would not allow him to kill off Star Trek's most famous icon, James T Kirk, no, he had to rely on ridiculous plot-holes to achieve that!!!
because your hero could never grow old, fat, tired or move on with his life after loss?
You're right about the plot holes though. Ergh. There are a lot easier ways of solving that problem that leaves a lot fewer holes and wouldn't require killing Kirk again.
DONT YOU GET IT? Kirk just got here himself.... his best parts of his life are coming back to him for real.... picard is nothing to him.... NOTHING. No future can compare to the emotional bond that you form with your past.
It's the kind of scene you CAN'T hate- that's Kirk and Picard there, that's an astronomical event of epic proportions, like Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt all meeting- and yet...
It's sort of hollow.
I don't want Kirk to be cracking eggs and talking about horses for half the scene, and Picard nagging him the other half.
I want Kirk talking about how much he misses his old crewmates and ship. And Picard missing his family- so they can BOND!
I'm on the fence about this movie. Sort of love/hate, but I maintain that it's the best directed of all the trek movies. The cinematography in this one was spectacular.
@tkhushrenada I agree, it's brilliant to see Kirk and Picard meet and work as a team. I just wish they'd come up with something intelligent to bring them together, rather than the poorly-written fluff that was the Nexus.
I burned a lot of braincells watching those when i was a kid

Deserves to be written:
"Don't let them promote you.
Don't let them transfer you.
Don't let them do anything that takes you of the bridge of that ship, because while you're there . . . you can make a difference."
Just sums up Kirk's character.

Picard met Spock when he was an Ambassador, so is Spock still alive at this point? Did he ever die? How long does a Vulcan live? I'm all confused.

For a second at 10:00 it sounds like Picard says "help us stop Sauron."
It made me laugh to think of a LotR/Star Trek crossover. And cringe.

@dappleddakota AHA YEA AND WHEN HES TALKING TO WHOOPI IN THE BEGINNIG HES LIKE ID LIKE TO GOTO THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN IN VERIDIAN 3 JUST BEFORE SAURON DESTROYED THE STAR I HAVE TO STOP HIM LOLOL (BTW I KNOW HE DOESNT SAY SAURON BUT HIS ACCENT SOUNDS LIKE IT)
minaLUV88 1 year ago
@dappleddakota

"I was out saving the galaxy when your grandfather was in diapers"....10 stars
tony7star 2 years ago 64
@tony7star As much as I think a lot of this scene was a missed opportunity (the biggest in Trek history) THAT is probably the best moment, and it's a great one...
"I was out saving the galaxy when your grandfather was in diapers- besides which, I think the galaxy owes me one."
And if it ever DID owe someone one, it'd be James T. Kirk!
(The other great part I like is the end, Picard's "Come back with me, help me stop Soran- make a difference AGAIN!" Could've been so heroic, but...)
obiwanobiwan13 1 year ago
@tony7star Best line of the movie! xD
deezvids 1 year ago
@tony7star Kirk didnt face as formidable aliens as Picard and Janeway.. Picard had to deal with the borg, Q. And Captain Janeway had to deal with the borg and species 8472, the caretaker, Q etc. I think Kirk was the novis compared to them.
NumberDne 1 year ago
@NumberDne But Kirk dealt with his foes just as well as any other captain dealt with theirs.
Besides, Kirk specialized in making computer kill themselves. All he'd have to do to defeat the Borg would be to get in contact with the computer part of them, and BOOM!
Borg: Exterminated.
Next mission?
StoneKnivesBearskins 1 year ago
@NumberDne If Kirk had access to such advanced ships to command that the other two captains did, he would have done just as good if not better. You can't tell me that Admiral Halsey couldn't command a fleet in todays Navy.
NevadaWrangler 9 months ago
@NevadaWrangler Good point but then we will never know how Kirk would have performed in the modern age of starfleet. His whole life's journey may have taken a different course,..... ahh, but then i guess that also applies to Janeway and Picard in the reverse. Yep i concede.
NumberDne 9 months ago
@NumberDne Oh... right? And I guess Trelane or Apollo the God weren't formidable... V'Ger wasn't formidable? Get watch TOS and all the original episodes before you say things liek that.
terrywest111 9 months ago
v'ger or apollo or trelane would've made mince meat out of the borg. species 8472 i think trelane and v'ger would make mince meat out of.

thetvstation555 2 years ago
That is not Kirk, if that was really Kirk, his nexus would be either commanding the enteprise or been with carol and david marcus
And this what what Kirk and picard should have done:
Picard goes back and saves his brother and nephew from the fire and then arrests Soran later on in ten forward
Meanwhile, Kirk leaves and goes back to the same time that Picard did but he goes on Vulcan and meets up with his old friend Spock
THE END
elcap22 2 years ago
Absolutely, but that would be too much of a common-sense ending for Rick Berman, and it would not allow him to kill off Star Trek's most famous icon, James T Kirk, no, he had to rely on ridiculous plot-holes to achieve that!!!
Graham2271 2 years ago
because your hero could never grow old, fat, tired or move on with his life after loss?
You're right about the plot holes though. Ergh. There are a lot easier ways of solving that problem that leaves a lot fewer holes and wouldn't require killing Kirk again.
aijire 2 years ago
To be honest, that makes sense but it would be a really crap film !!

Spock's appearance on TNG was so much better and awe inspiring. Partially because the story was so much better.

DONT YOU GET IT? Kirk just got here himself.... his best parts of his life are coming back to him for real.... picard is nothing to him.... NOTHING. No future can compare to the emotional bond that you form with your past.

This whole scene...

The cinematography in this one was spectacular.

ian9161 2 years ago 2
@tkhushrenada I agree, it's brilliant to see Kirk and Picard meet and work as a team. I just wish they'd come up with something intelligent to bring them together, rather than the poorly-written fluff that was the Nexus.
