  • I wish I could play the drums just half as good as you bro....awesome vid.

  • sorry but have you ever seen the video where porcaro explains rosanna? maybe i'm making a mistake beacause i don't speak english very well, and maybe i understood something wrong, but i think that porcaro is explaining that the ghost are everywhere

  • @lcc10992 read the header (more info, button top right)... go the the link there and then tell me what ghost notes you think are missing.

    cheers

    g

  • you are right, in the first part of the song Jeff plays a few ghost notes.

  • all of u complaining of ghost notes.. if you didn't know, the producer of this song does put on ALOT of layers on all instruments.. including drums. The band itself cannot play the studio version of this song.

  • nice playing:)

  • where are the ghost notes

  • @undercoverbrother01 The ghost notes are not in this clip.

A Catholic priest was invited before the clip was filmed, and the priest exorcised the ghost notes away.

The priest also fiddled with a little boy before he left the house.

    --- THE END ---

  • BTW, "ghost notes??" Screw them and the people griping about them. You don't need them because you're rock solid. dk

  • You blew the end of the song. It doesn't change the fact, though, that for 99.77 percent of it, you truly touched me. It literally brought tears of joy. You are a fine percussionist and musician and you'd better not ever stop. EVER. Thank you.

    dk

  • Good job :)

  • sounds good mate I like your work

  • You are missing the ghost notes. That is mostly because of your skill.

  • it just sonds like porcaro's play !! very very nice, i'm always surprised to see people make this rythm because it's so hard to do.... ! :) very great !

  • spot on!

  • Great job....your fellow drumming friend......PEACE

  • How do you play along with the original sound of the drums? Isn´t that confusing?

I would like to remove drums from songs and to perform them myself...but as far as I know, It´s impossible...

  • It's possible, but not completely, and you would make the song sound horrible as the other instruments and the voice have some frequencies that they use as well as the drums.

  • Nicely done! Your ride is kinda messed up btw.

  • no ghost note in the snare but great cover

  • is this ah vh 11

  • awesome job!

  • excelente, excelent, gorgeous, awesome !!! I loooove it, and I thank you so much for everything, for posting this vid, for liking this kind of music, for being different than our new drummers..I'm a drummer too and I'm gonna observe this vid very well , not to copy you, but to learn from you. Thanks, god bless, and keep the hard work. I'M ADDING THIS TO MY FAVS..

  • Good version man. I can tell by just you finger technique your and excellent drummer my friend. I've been at it for about 17 years. That is almost exactly how I play the track! Propts!!

  • normally you should use more of the möller motion, playing fast hihat pattern, no fingers because the hihat gives you just a little rebound, on the ridecymbal it is really useful, though. by rthe way, nice cover ;), now try it with some more ghost notes

  • I suppose you mean the Moeller technique?

  • yes, hear in germany, where i live, an "ö" is the same as an " oe" ;). happy new year by the way.

  • I don't believe Moeller Technique is employed in this groove anywhere.

  • I don't think I said it did, though. :)

  • @MikePostDrums My bad, sorry about the comment. you didnt say that, one of your viewers commented that and I mistakenly put comment in wrong place. Still learning this youtube stuff. PEACE

  • good job

  • At 1:15 he beginns to play Ghost-Notes!

  • 0:26

  • Who cares if you are not playing the ghost notes? Awesome job..Sounds great!

  • who cares ? .... haha ...are you kidding me ..those ghost notes are why everyone is so obsessed with this beats ...without the ghost notes you just have a regular old shuffle

  • I can agree with you...the grace/ghost notes can provide a richer, "rolling/fluid" sound/feel to the song...still, I noticed that he WAS playing grace/ghost notes (at least at points)...I do like the production on this video anyway - I feel that geofffry's drums/cymbals (sound/volume, etc.) blend well with the song...

  • @sweetfly66 Thank you for talking some sense into this guy! He's so sassy!

  • good job but you are missing the gost notes

  • good job bud

  • i have a td6 and i was wondering what what setting your playing on, or at least what are the names of the cymbals on the td6 your using?

  • sorry it was a few years ago I recorded that... not got a td-6 anymore..

    g

  • Okay, I've got to interject something here. When a drummer records an original song, he doesn't say "You have to play it exactly as I do or it's not right." GOD PEOPLE! If we played everything the same, it would be boring as $%#@! Ghost notes or not, it's not that big of a deal. If it sounds good, just enjoy it. THAT'S what it's all about. Good work Geofffry.

  • I see what you are saying... But If he learns it that much why not learn all of it?

  • Gran ejecucion, buena tecnica moeller ... a ver si te sale con al matched grip ... saludos felicitaciones.

  • well done bro, keep up the good work. Playing to songs does a lot for ones confidence. I wish i could play that song like that. Your right hand is amazingly loose, which drummers can find hard to develop. If you can play along with this song like that, i'm pretty sure you can create any beat you like.Congrats man.

  • as an old SLOW wore out drummer who has been playing for 45 yrs ,I must say EXCELLANT JOB !You have great rythmn on a song that is tough to play anyway!Would like to see you do some Kansas which is some very hard music to play especially the LEFTOVERTURE & POINT OF NO RETURN albums. But great job making it your own!!!

  • good job but there are a lot of ghost notes in this song that you missed

  • read the header (more info, button top right)... go the the link there and then tell me what ghost notes you think are missing..

    cheers

    g

  • ohhh i see

  • @geofffry haha, I think these kinda commenters are just yankin' her short chain, since you stated NOT to do something and they'll do it anyway, because that's what they do to their father figure at home.... they're strokin' yer fur the wrong way boah BWAhahha... I'd do the same thing, but looks like somebody beat me to it...

    LVOE your drumming DAYyum... POCKet

  • @vicfirthdrummer95 yer i though that too!

  • great job keep up the good work

  • cheers

  • NICE PLAY ~!~!~!

  • nice try, but playing along is one thing, creating a groove for the band is another.

    Matt

  • :)...

  • hey geoffry, very good work. rosanna have a very dificult beat with triplets of snare, cymbals .

work more to be one of the best.

    ass : the portuguese pianist

  • Damn. I've been playing for ten years and wish I could play half as well as this guy.

  • Have you heard better so far!

People want to try for comparison.

The guy got it that's all! Let him the age of those who believe they are better and i am sure he goes all over them in just one year. (sorry for my English)Frog guy who love drum!

  • Very impressive !

  • seriously,am i missing something?why is everybody giving this guy a hard time??he's a really tight and experienced drummer.

i like your style brother, good job!!

  • CLOSE...but....NO CIGAR. The outro is VERY bad...keep practicing , you'll get it.

  • thanks for your comment..

I will keep practicing as you recommended

  • Whoa..... I like. Great Job

  • i thinkj u dont miss the ghost notes, all of them seems to be played

  • Whether you missed the ghosts notes or not it was a great effort. Kudos!

  • You are missing the ghost notes!

  • lol

  • open your eyes man, its not a good mix so you cant always hear them, but you can see him playing them.

  • tu as désactivé les notes mais je te mets 5 étoiles . répond moi en français si tu peux ...

my english is so bad !!!

  • bravo geofffry beaucoup ont essayé mais tu es un des meilleurs. t'as le rythme c'est super .merci.

puroy2023 : achete une batterie la tienne est pourrie ...LOL

  • ejr22 ,,,,,men dont understand ur language,,try to speak english,,hahahaha

  • It was just for laughing, I am not drummer but guitarist and I like this song , the schuffle of jeff porcaro

    Continue like that

    a++

  • It was just for laughing, I am not drummer but guitarist and I like this song , the shuffle of jeff porcaro

    Continue like that

    a++

  • geoff where do you get your roland drums from? they are so fucking expensive!

  • watch my version, DENZ JAMMING (rossana)

  • Do you always spell Rosanna wrong? ;-)

  • I found silviodoug's download of Jeff P's drum lessons to explain the evolution of the "Rosanna " shuffle from Bonham & Purdie very informative. It's Part V, btw.

  • very well made..

    I ain't afraid no ghostnotes.....

  • What are ghost notes?

  • notes played very quietly on drums. sometimes so quiet you can hardly hear them..

in this.. all the notes apart from the loud snare hits on 2 & 4 are ghost notes..

  • Jeff Porcaro said: "On the Hi-Hat I playing the first and last note of the triplet on each be, with the left hand I´m gonna ghost the second note of each triplet on each be." - That´s are ghost notes xD

  • i think te fills are great!!!

Well done, and i hear the ghostnotes xD

  • Not bad but where are the Ghost notes ?

  • the ghots notes are not played all the way through on the origional only in certain sections... they come in after about 27 seconds.

  • no they don't..... they come straight away!

  • no no no... eq the drums so you can hear the snare and you will clearly hear they dont come in full on right away... to be honest I might put the EQ'ed track on you tube to show all..

  • OK, they do tend to do it live straight away, that's all....

its really difficult to hear yours.....

you should post your drum take minus the backing....the mix is not clear enough to hear your good work...

    cheers....

    K

  • dude... i hope you have real drums somewhere else.

  • yep.. dont use the electric much any more... accept learning tunes. this is an old vid..

  • Very nice. besides mentioning the ghost notes like everyone else has. My only thing would be to say relax a little, look a little tense. In no way am i critizing. i think you did an amazing job on a really hard groove.

  • Tight!

    Very clean.

  • neat

  • really nice...

but where are the ghost notes @ snare ?

  • :) there so quiet you cant hear them and so fast you can see them...

  • i agree, where are them?? I have the notes, and there are too much bass drum from your side i the beginning, but all in all, a strong 4 from my side;)

  • very nicely done, excellent job. BTW for the record, Jeff didnt need to play that many ghost notes since he was playing with a percussionist and the ghost notes you may think your hearing are probably congas. The congas in this tune add that stuff ghost notes also could add

  • Cool mate you played that with passion!! keep it up matey!! wat kit were you playin that on by the way??

    J...

  • nice going dude... i know its a hard one ;O)

  • that's not bad

  • Brilliant. Really enjoyed watching you doing your thing!

  • you rock dude, right on the money

  • Soo fucking good!

  • very nice. but the ghost notes (of yours) can't be clerly heard..not hatin', but just commenting..still, very well done..

  • You make this look so easy! Especially the fills, which you have got right in the pocket. Brilliant. Wish my version was as tight as yours - nice one!

  • Yeah man you rock! I'm currently learning that half time shuffle groove, but you do a great job, even the ghosts notes.

    Keep Clear!

  • Holy crap! That's almost perfect! very clean, in the pocket bro! Congrats on the skills!

  • hey wat kind of pads are those or are those DIY pads?

  • wat edrums are these?

  • nice play!

    i wish I could...

  • he ghosts very light and he does on the ride and on rim

  • and one more thing at the "not quite a year..." part he playes at the ride cymbal

  • nope.. there may be some toms in there or poss. some over dubbing in the studio. but there is no ride in that part..

  • Is that you playing?

  • yes

  • Your good,I am a drummer also.

  • nope... listen to the origional... it only has all the snares in the main section...

    watch again..

  • I did listen to the original He ghosts all

  • nope... listen to the origional... it only has all the snares in the main section...

watch again.. eq.. the snare out its very clear..

  • jajaja qe weon mas chanat, lcoo en la clinica de jeff porcaro sale y te faltan los fantasmas , jaja asi cualquiera

  • Uh oh ... great. A bit uneven at the end but still great.

  • At 4:22 u missed a snare.

  • i cant do triplets on the hi hats its hard

  • triplets are easier on an electric kit's hi hat - the stick seems to bounce back...but still this video is very impressive!

  • Very good drumming! Like it :)

  • Very good

  • I LOVE this vid always watch it and imagine I can drum like that some day.

  • AWE-INSPIRING!!! I have loved this song since I can remember... and you MORE than do it justice! :)

  • Did you know that Bernard Pretty Purdie originated that beat? It's not new to soul and R&B drummers. I am however very impressed by this young man. Of course he has the material down, from a technical standpoint. But it is the flavor and feel that he is showing that is truly a fine job.

  • sry, but you play it wrong!!!!.....where are the ghost notes????? >poor!!

  • sorry but YOU are wrong...

watch the whole vid and listen to the CD

the ghost notes dont start till further into the tune. each verse they build from few to teh full "Jeff P shuffle" we ALL know and love..

  • I can't YOUR drumming at all.

  • incredible...

  • dude you make the fill at 1:36 look so cool... you're an awesome drummer man. GREAT skill.

  • ghost notes?

  • see travisbarker000 post below...

  • I so much prefer the way that Simon Phillips plays it live, i mean i know he didnt make it up, but the ghosting in that is just phenominal, especially on the Livefields album. Top marks though!

  • missing quite a few ghost notes there

  • na, listen to the track again but eq the snare up.. the ghost notes build up as the tune builds, to eventually the full "JP Shuffle"

  • you're right, didn't actually listen to the entire song just know the shuffle groove. man you are really great, how long you been playing and how much do you practice and have you had professional instruction?

  • loved the ending man and i wish i was patient enough to learn how to play the hi-haats like that

  • nice hi-hat technique

  • We hear Jeff's drums better than yours.

  • Love this performance of a difficult song to drum to. I remember practicing this one along with Hold the Line by Toto. It took ages before I could comfortably play them through. Well done.

  • Could you describe your kit a little. Looks like pintech cymbals. How do like those and describe the toms. They look acoustic all the way. I agree with triplexke, How did you get all those connected? Use splitters and make then single trigger?

  • i use splitters so the cyms dont have choke option or separate edge and top sounds.

its a custom kit... i.e. acoustic drums with roland parts put inside.

the cyms a pintech or roland, all fine but I preffer acoustic cyms anytime.

  • Awesome job man ! Keep on rockin !

  • great!!!!

  • That was absolutely great! I have only been drumming for about a year now, and one of the first things someone told me about drumming, is that "Rosanna" by toto was one of the hardest songs to play. A lot of respect to you, and good luck! By the way, i play a td6 myself. How did you manage to connect all those cymbals to your td-6? By adding just one cymbal, i used up all free plugs... Anyway, very nice! Greetz, Triplexke.

  • Hi, you didn't use a 'minus drums' track for the videos? Cause I think I can hear more of the original drums, and not much of what you're playing. Sometimes I can hear 'flams' between your drums and the original drums. Try getting a 'minus drums' track of the songs and re-recording the performance, then your playing will be much clearer.
