  • God I love that soul, gospel feel. What a great performance, right from the heart.

  • Love it. Kinda sad but true

  • Bill Withers Live At Carnegie Hall is a classic!

  • Hello!!!!!! Awesome song!!!! How Patriotic of him!! AND He was born on the 4th of July!!!

  • So fucking beautiful.

If you don't hear the message... you must hate art. You must have a dead soul.

  • What a song, i know it by the john legend and the roots cover. Thats a great cover too!

  • Strange how old songs bring back such memories, especially from a story teller such as Bill Withers. Thanks for the post.

  • great tune I am a huge Bill Withers fan but I had no idea he did this tune until John Legend did it .hank you for posting.

  • thank you* for this one...someone Play this One for the Current Administration, Yo'

  • Bill Withers,smooth man!

  • im hoping my bandmate wont join the military when we learn this song.

  • One of the best live albums ever. It has emotion, makes u wanna dance. can't think of another soul live album that comes close.

  • As long as humanity exists songs like this, and especially this one, will stay relevant.

  • Damn

  • Bring those boys home...

  • Stunning irony and fantastic song. Ian Melkbosstrand Cape Town

  • What a fantastic song, v.moving.

  • such an amazing song!!!

  • The codes and the slang used in RAP music are works of the devil..Those souls of music artist now are being controlled and used...It's scary and sad cause young people will never know what real music is if Rappers spread like they are. They have no expression of love in thier lyrics.I'm 25 years old and Jesus has kept me in light since I was 13 years old.And Im so glad that I know what real,True,GOOD,Love,Beautiful music is..Mr.Withers, glad to hear you. And I hope good continues to bless you.

  • love the strings ...

  • I think what the rappers miss is that music needs to be accessible to get the point across. Using profanity to the point of overkill, and stupid rhyming patterns and code words and slang expressions make your "music" reach a narrow audience.

Men like Mr Withers sang with style and grace, and people of all races and creeds were touched by their message and music.

  • I'm a huge fan of Bill. The man is on the same level with Steve Wonder. His music is so deep. This is my first time hearing this song. And i just love it. this is real music.the young people need to list to this man.you go Bill.

  • I can't believe I just found out about Bill Withers a few year's ago. The man is amazing.

  • Thank you for posting this.

  • @CNC295 You're Welcome my friend!

  • War is sometime a necessary evil, one we must weigh against our children lives or more importantly, their freedom.

  • Cool tune from back n the day!!!!!!

  • Kind of blown away by this one.

  • John Legend and the Roots do a very well done cover of this song, but for my money it doesn't get better than Mr. Withers. He just has such a sincere voice.

  • the 2 dislikes must be from Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld.

  • @kavindp Yes indeed!

  • Live at Carnegie Hall i think

  • Shit yeah! those first few lines he belts out are gold

  • Easily one of the most powerful songs ever done!!

  • HANDS DOWN A CLASSIC

  • Masterful piece of music. Bill captures the essence of a horrible time.....a time that occurs too often during man's existence.

  • i have this album and this is my favorite song

  • timely even now! i love bill's very meaninful lyrics, not to mention that wonderful voice!

  • Heard this for the first time on WPFW radio here in DC on Memorial Day weekend. Haunting, beautiful and powerful.

  • I wish every general and politician in this world that feels going to war is a solution, takes a few minutes of their life to listen to this song. Just to make them think a little about the thousands of young people they are going to send to die.

  • this song rely tells me that times havent change that much

  • God bless the military. If there is a god,

protect the people that are protecting

    the Nation!

  • @MrRiconga You mean protect the people protecting oil.

  • who sampled the beginning of this song? was it fat boy slim???

  • @wickedwetcat

    Yes. Fatboy Slim - Demons.

  • Real music.....the soul and tone in his voice was so real. I just joined the Navy and I know "Reverend Harris" will be watching over me!! You changed lives Bill Withers!! Now only if you can change Lil' Wayne and the followers that make what they call music.

    Thanks for the post brotha!!

  • This man has been forgotten for the most part..I got to talk to him live on a television program with Dennis Wholey (sp) What a waste not to recognize his talent!

  • I find myself listening to this everyday...................John L & the Roots version.....they killed this........amazing

  • Bill Withers came to my college in the 70's in Nebraska... it was unbelieveable...thank you Bill Withers...for your powerful living reaching Spirit.

  • People can knock Legend all they want but, he's bringing an entire new crowd back to this era of music. There are worse things...

  • Omg. He is so wonderful.

  • This is it. Mesmerizing. Bill deserves more accolades and its a travesty that he isn't considered by many to be one of the greatest American singer/songwriters of all time. True passion and heart. He sings directly from the soul and I hear it.

  • What's up Gstrong, from Roots & Rhythm out here in Denver

dig the word, dig the music

  • cold message............John L &the Roots killed this....cold mess

  • @sometimes350 I'm hoping you mean they killed this in the positive...fact of the matter is no one will ever live up to the original - and it is ignorant for us to think otherwise. I thought John Legend and the roots did an amazing job considering this song is so hard to reinterpret....there will never be another Bill, but it sure is an honour to sing his songs!

  • @NZsouljagirl no worries, definitely supposed to be meant in the positive. no one can live up to an original piece, thats why its called an original. but imitation is the greatest form of flattery, and with @sometimes350, I can agree that their version simply does this one by Bill justice, since the message is so relevant today, and probably will be forever.

  • soul cleansing genius

  • fuck yeah this rules

  • I miss real music; Bill Withers IS music. At least John Legend is keepin the groove on...all the other rappers and wannabe r&b artists need to take notes from Bill.

  • Tears!

  • so pwerfull

  • simply beautiful.

  • A real masterpiece.

  • Even the haters clicked the "like" button. This song is that awesome.

  • War. Is Hell. It can easily be seen that this song has incredible relevance to this day and age.

  • 240 likes and no dislikes... Hmmm.. It's kind of hard to dislike the truth!

  • PERFECT....thanks a million...just what i needed :)

  • This is really one of the most fantastic things ever

  • Whats this? no autotune ......

    i love it

  • no dislikes.... awesome

  • every time i hear of a young guy dying for our country

    i think of this song

  • im left handed

  • @tajiamgohda me too

  • can't get enough of this song!! full of Soul. Love listening to Bill Withers.

  • Thanks for posting this great version man! A beautifull and meaningfull piece that was recorded way before my time, yet so applicable for these days.....

  • @StephanvanderLinden No Problem my friend. Some matters are just applicable in every ERA,war being 1. Thanks again my friend! BLESS!!!

  • @StephanvanderLinden word bon. bill was and is the man , but this sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday or last week. We just do the same thing over and over again and expect the a different out come. Put the guns down yall

  • damn this brings chills...

  • From the heart, man. Like a butterfly after a storm.

    2.Sinner man - Nina Simone

3.Troubles of the World -Mahalia Jackson

    4.They Won't Go when I Go - Stevie Wonder

  • I didn't want to add this to my favorites, there are only a hand full of songs that make me tear up!And this is one!!!

  • Thank a vet

  • the performance at the rally was out of hand. the original is amazing.

  • Just discovered this amazing song via John Legend's cover at the Rally to Restore Sanity. Thanks for the video.

  • @AboveAllNations Me too. That performance was stunning. I had never heard of Bill Withers. Just ordered some CDs. This song is amazing. Also, just shared it FB so hopefully folks will get the message about how this shit never changes. Thanks GStrongRAW!

  • @makavity00 U never heard of Bill ..Wow!Good thing you have now!!

  • @AboveAllNations I like bill better! No offensive to John but I always enjoyed Bill! It's just nothing like the original!

  • This is great, thanks for putting this up! How do you feel about John Legend and The Root's cover of this song on their new album "Wake Up!"?

  • Write a letter to my mother..............try to get a deferment.....for my brother

  • This song brings back memories. I was young in the early 70's, but I definitely remember some of the guys from my neighborhood coming back from Vietnam. A few records I can remember being played all the time in my house...CCR, Ray Charles, and BIll Withers Live. This song was always my favorite and means even more to me now after spending 20 years in the military and a vet. Bill Withers is a very humble, caring man...so clear in this song.

  • Great, great, GREAT song! Thanks man!

  • Spiritual.

  • I looked up the original version and must admit that i never ever heard of this song or this artist until the John legend/Roots remake. Incredible music and lyrics. I am glad it was redone and I have much respect for the originator of this song. Thank GOd newer artist can reach back and grab good music.

  • @Sammiami23 Then you need to listen to some classics from him ASAP! :D You got some catching up to do. Here are a few you should listen to. 1. Ain't No Sunshine (there is no way you don't know this song!) 2. Lean On Me 3. Lovely Day (you know this one for sure :D) 4. Use Me 5. Just The Two Of Us 6. Who is He (And What Is He To You) 7. Kissing My Love 8. Grandma's Hands I could go on and on but i guess this is enough to get you started. :))) Have fun listening to him!
  • Bill Withers is one of the best American singer songwriters period.

  • Amazing song, gives me chills every time I listen to it. Especially the John Legend/Roots version of it.

  • Deep song. Today's music is written by kids. Kids cannot express what an adult has experienced.

  • I can't stop listening to this song, cause when it stops, everything seems so bleak. Guess thats what happens when someone speaks truth.

  • MAN, what a great respectful, RICH, song

  • A moving tribute to all that served in that war

  • Long live the journey of the peaceful promise

  • I'm new skool but love old skool music, I'm on 30 so I wasn't even born yet, so this my first time hearing this song. John Legend and the Roots remade this and I had to hear the original version.. This is a great song. We don't have song now a days that makes us think or song that are from the soul. Thanks for sharing

  • @chosen092279 That is the exact same reason I wanted to hear this.

  • @chosen092279 That is the exact same reason I wanted to hear this. After listening to this, I can say the Roots and John Legend did a good job on this song.

  • 1973? this could easily apply to today. a true master and a classic

  • I truly didnt know "soul" until I heard this. I got my hands on everything he ever wrote after this. Amazing. I truly cant think of anything written in the last 5-10 years that has this much heart.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WOW!!!!!My first time hearing this and its got me....tears.....Why cant the truth be told with conviction so these young men and women at least sacrafice their time and unfortunately their lives for something they believe in. Mankind is casting it's own spell......But again awsome song thanks for posting.

  • Powerful in a league of it's own, and so disheartening relevant still.

  • God Bless Bill Withers...so very strong and powerful music that takes many back to a rough and trying time in history...great stuff that cant be repeated by any other.

    Very real song!!!

  • All says the war is great if the other side dies and the war is bad if this side dies. Only human animal kills each other ... no other animal does it ...

  • You are very wise!!!

  • Not so: chimps are known to attack others and kill them--even becoming cannibalistic in the process.

  • john lennon was never a trador ! he cared about this country!

  • Viet Nam Vet here > thanks for this post. I remember running into Bill during the early seventies in L.A. when I came back from that crazy war. I shared with him how I wrote letters for several of my army buds while in Nam, they couldn't write or read that well--they were drafted and so was I too. I often wondered how they weathered the storm returning to their respective homes. Great song BW!

  • This is so sublime it twists my melon that theres no comments!

  • maybe its that deep man! you know..
