Have you guys noticed (the fiveawesomegirls) that as the year progresses, you stop saying stuff like, "I can't think of anything to say." or "this video is really boring". I just notice this stuff because I basically watched all 200 something videos of yours in a week.
I love "Love is Mix tape" I used to make mix tapes for my friends before burning cds became the new mode. I even have ones featuring the best music from my years of high school. Oh, and don't feel like you have to sing a song if in your heart you know it's not ready. Songs, stories, poems are very personal and only you know when it's right.
Arrgh! Please, I am begging you, make the audio levels more or less similar in your videos! It is SO irksome having to whip out my earphones whenever you play music, after listening to you whisper away.
I commented on your last song, but 500 characters hardly makes for adequate constructive criticism!
I think you have some talent as a musician, but not necessarily out front as a lead singer. While your look draws people in, your subdued style doesn't stand out in a sea of other young folk singer/musicians. Kudos to you for picking up on the shallow feedback. I think people can be honest without being gratuitously cruel or shallowly sugary Paula Abdul-like.
That's the thing. I never really wanted to be the frontwoman, at least not for s giner-songwriter kind of style. I'd really rather just write music, or be the frontwoman for some kick ass rock band. -Liane.
Read my earlier comment, and it came across a little harsh. I apologize. I was tired and wasn't thinking clearly. I'm being absolutely honest when I say that I truly only meant that as constructive criticism and nothing else. If it came across any other way, I do apologize again.
Some people say that Harry and the Potters are awesome, but their "tuning" makes me cringe.
If hater comments are discouraged, then you might consider yourself damned with faint praise when fans say that your songs are "awesome". But what else can people say when the annotation for 5stars (awesome!) becomes a cliche and nobody wants to be seen as a hater?
I only remember hearing one of your songs, which I thought was good, but I actually have another question. Just curious but are you actually in school or something? Its seems like all you do is travel all over the place doing fun stuff. I would love to do the same, but the bill collectors would be hot on my tail. Take care
Hey, there have been no flashing green lines in your past couple of videos!!! YAY!!
I understand where your coming from about your music. Personally I always try to give positive feedback, because I dont want to come off as a hater or anything, I just really enjoy all kinds of music.
One thing I have noticed about you is that you really do have a very nice voice. But, as you mentioned in an earlier video, your guitar skills aren't exactly up to par with your vocal skills. It seems as though every time you want to change notes vocally, you change chords so that you can sing the root of the chord. Always remember that in every major and minor chord you have three notes to choose from to sing (for example, the C Major Triad contains the notes C, E, and G).
That said, try slowing down your playing a little so that you're not switching chords on each vocal note change. Also keep in mind with every 7th (major or dominant), 9th, 11th, and 13th, you have at least one more note in the chord that you can sing instead of the root, and it'd still fit perfectly.
I really look forward to hearing some new stuff from you!
I just recently bought "Looking for Alaska" b/c I saw you guys mention it. I haven't read it yet, but wish I would've bought it in NY to find a note from you. :)
those boulders in central park prove the 6th borrow existed!
i have a theory that people think you are so awesome as a person that no matter what you do, even if it is singing the abc's, they will think it is amazing.
I was looking at trains/buses to NYC for the Paper Towns release party, but I probably won't make it... especially seeing as they'll be about 3 miles from my house when they come to Boston. :-)
Hey, I'm a music major at the University of PEI (going into 3rd year now) and I'm no genius or anything, however, for the songs of yours that I am not fond of...I just don't comment on them. But if you like, I have no problem critiquing them. I hope that doesn't sound snobby, but I'm glad you brought that 'bone' forward, and I agree, some of these people say awesome 'cause they love you...and its hard to improve when they're afraid to tell the truth. Keep on Liane! you do indeed have a gift.
1)You don't like posting songs not up to your standards because people say 'awesome' when you think it isn't?
Or,2)you're sick of the generic 'awesome' and would like comments that have more depth because you work hard on your songs and want more recognition than that?
Whichever it is, Liane, I'm here to say that the combo of your melodic voice, superb songwriting skills, and the way you strum on your guitar make your songs worth the listen.
I agree about the whole criticism thing. It's nice to hear that people like your songs, but if they're just saying it to be nice then that's not helping you at all.
And since I'm never going to have to see you in person to have an awkward meeting, I'll be honest from now on. But I like to think I have been for the most part anyways.
I do adore you Liane. If you want critiques of your music I am always up for doing that. As a musician I totally know what you mean. Why bother putting music out if you're just going to get "oh that's nice!" every time and no real response.
Speaking of which I happen to know there's already a song titled Home by Michael Buble. And i know that's not really an issue cause plenty of songs have the same title, but maybe just something to think about. :)
No no, that's exactly what you should do, don't feel bad about it. If you feel a piece isn't ready for to put out there, you should definitely refine it until it satisfies you. It's why anyone anywhere plays music, or performs any sort of art, for them to enjoy. Us enjoying it is just an added bonus.
Liane! I saw you at the Wizard Rock festival and my friend and I wanted to come meet you, but you looked occupied with some friends at the time. I'll be at the Paper Towns release party...looking forward to meeting you there!
Well I just wanted to say, that I do enjoy your music. And I do think it's awesome. But if it's not (and not just with your songs, but with videos in general) if I don't wanna praise it, I won't comment on it. Also, you have my support with whatever you wanna do =)
your music is amazing. "on and on" is probably one of my favorites.. you may not think all of your music is the best but you're probably your toughest critic. some one will always like it.
I love Rosh Hashana! But I miss my Social Studies Test. :-/ Ah well, such as life.
I agree with you not putting a song out for the wrong reasons though. I hope that when this song is finished and ready you will be really proud of yourself. :)
I can never figure out what the squiggles are behind you on your wall. Is that wall paper or something you painted?
I feel really guilty admitting this but a lot of times I skip the music when you or one of the other girls are performing. I don't know much about music and while music can mean a lot to other people for myself I rarely "really" connect with a song. Sorry!
haha!! i loveeee a chorus line. omgomg, i'm sooo mad that I didn't go to the nyc wizard rock fest! I live pretty close to new york and I could have gone, but something had to come up. (please don't "that's what she said") lolol. but I might see you during the Johns book tour in new york!!!!!! YAYYYYYY
i mean everything i've seen you sing... i've loved it. no lie. sometimes you're songs are heartbreaking and make me cry, but i mean that means it's still awesome because it made me feel something. idk when i like something i tell you. if i didn't i would tell you.
To be honest, I fastforward through your songs. I like them, but I'm not on youtube to listen to music. I'm more interested in what you have to say in a conversational medium.
Usually if I'm not particularly excited about a song you do (or anybody), I just don't comment. Sometimes I'll comment if I have something specific to say if I can think of a helpful critique, but usually absence means 'eh, not so much' :D
I hate when people do that with stuff I write, and I would be the same if I wrote music. It's so frustrating to constantly get the feedback of "That was awesome! I love it!" when you know there is better, and there is always room to improve on everything. I hate that feeling so much.
I honestly really do love your music. Your voice is amazing, and I just love listening to your music... and I'm not just saying this to make you feel better or worse (it's however you take it)... I say I love your music because I really do.
As for your songs, I love 'Your Girl' It stood out for me by far the most. Some people are open and honest about your songs, you may just have to look out for those people.
I'll certainly try and give more useful information in my comments from now on.

Well, here's how you can understand my rating system.
If it's okay, good but not great, I'll say "That was awesome!" just because you made it and everything you make is awesome.
If the song is great, I'll probably say somthing more prolific and less generic about it.
