  • Is that a 6 string bass? I think even Ross Perot was too hip for this stuff. I find it strangely soothing, though. I'm not ashamed...

  • This music -- believe it or not -- has French words to it, sung by Petula Clark at watch?v=ejjo99agOtQ

  • Opiates anybody?

  • Mary Lou Metzger isn't laughing because she notices that Sandi has forgotten to sing. She's not even looking at Sandi. Mary Lou smiles as big as a house *all the time* and it is so annoying. She will smile and crack her cheeks even when singing. Even today, she smiles like a prat during the PBS Welk rebroadcasts.

  • They are faking to a playback of the studio recording. Sandi forgets to sing the second part of the chorus (note Mary Lou's laughter). What fell on the floor at around 1:13 came from Buddy Merrill's guitar. Both harpsichordist Bob Ralston and Merrill pretend not to notice. Then Welk arrives, tells Buddy he has done a good job, Buddy is grateful. Lawrence adds the zinger -- "especially when that white thing fell off" -- and Welk, Merrill, and Ralston have a good laugh.

  • this makes me want to kill myself

  • looks like something falls from the harpsichordist's head

  • Wow! "Calcutta"! I love this song! I have a fantasy that a DJ will play it at some dance somewhere and no DJ ever has a copy of it, either on CD or digitally, when I request it at weddings, etc. I am bringing my own CD next time. Gotta show the young 'uns how to dance--and I'm only 40 and this song rocks!

  • Calcutta was a Billboard No. 1 Hit in 1961 for two weeks and Welk's first big hit. Ironically, Welk himself did not like the tune and it was recorded with his musical director George Cates conducting. There are other Welk versions of this song on Youtube, showing Frank Scott as harpsichordist and the Lennon sisters as part of the choir.

  • A great Welkian number. I love Salli Flynn, Sandy Griffiths, Mary Lo Metzger, and Gail Farrell singing and clapping in this one. I wish I could remember the name of that tune! I don't get why you call this "crazed dope fiends" Welk ladies don't use drugs!

  • The song is Calcutta...and it really rocks!

  • But some of the older dancers did use drugs, they called it Geritol. -:)
