  • But that doesn't allow you to control RPM speed .

  • parts 0:32 and 1:32 were the best!

  • Excellent video. See my channel electric motor new design. It is very original model of electric motor (it has no accelerating coil, special phase-shifting devices and condensers).

  • man, you'll need a hell of a laser

  • that music is probably what the cd would sound like xD

  • penis

  • thats nice. if only they made cd's magnet proof

  • is that copper wire???.... if yes... hw the f**k does the magnet atract that :S

  • @Silvermist234

The main stand is copper-coated steel rod as used in gas welding. The battery becomes magnetic and sticks to it. There is a copper wire wrapped around the welding rod that acts as a brush against the magnet.

  • @MrfixitRick hmmmmm

  • @MrfixitRick what if you put another magnet as a base on the bottom to control the swinging effect from the cd...

  • @jacktheripper0194

That could work. Although I kinda like the swingin' CD...;)

Why not try it? It's fun playing with magnets!

  • this music has potential, but its all out of sinc...

  • @coatduck

Think of it as a hung over sally anne steampunk street band from another dimension and it should start to make sense.

  • wtf is this music

  • Civilization: Rewrite history in History's Greatest Strateg........Oh just forget it!

  • the music made my day

  • now I can make CD-player

  • Finally, Time to test my MUTE button!!! :D

  • this music keeps telling me to murder my family...

  • @Dudemag

That seems to happen to some folks.

    To those families...sorry about that!

The only cure is to join a nunnery.

  • Don't you think it's kinda a bad design? It looks to me like the positive and negative sides of the battery are in circuit, making contact with each other through a conductor. If that's the case, the battery will short circuit and possibly become hazardous.

  • @ADAMZUPANCIC

I use the most powerful NiMH AA battery (the Duracell 2650 MaH rechargeable), and I have never had battery trouble in thousands of experiments.

However, the several amps draw on the battery can be enough to heat up the battery and wires. Folks should be aware that some batteries with some motor setups, may overheat and be dangerous.

  • @MrfixitRick IF THE BATTERY GETS LOW, THE SPEED MAY DECREASE.....

  • You are so cool

  • this is retarded.

  • this music is lovely what is it's name?

  • @1001Lai

The name of this original song is, oddly enough, "Oddity3".

It is available for download (along with its brother and sister, "Oddity" and "Oddity2" and others), on my "mrfixitrick" iDisk Public Folder under Mrfixitrick's Original Music.

  • I love dat music.

  • does the magnet have to be neodymium?

  • @KateKateKate22

This experiment requires a neodymium magnet. I got it out of a shake-type flashlight, or they can be ordered online.

  • @MrfixitRick can i use a simple magnet ??

  • @888spartans

It has to be a powerful neodymium magnet for this experiment to work.

  • yup thats how cavmen used to listen to music but then thomas edison invented the walkman.

  • ahhhhhhhh theres the mute button much better

  • this would be awesome if you could get it to stabilize. like, a really minimalist cd player kind of thing. very awesome.

  • did u get this recording from SARCAN ?

  • i got teh same disk out of mac addict..

  • music perfectly fits to the accuracy of your brilliant units work ^_^

  • What's the rpm on that?

  • @XxgrowthxspirtxX

The rpm can range from a couple of hundred to about a thousand rpm with this setup.

  • does music even come out???

  • @elibetvalencia1

No, the music does not come from this CD. I made my own funky music to go with the funky setup.

  • @elibetvalencia1 ... There's not even a laser in this setup >.>

  • @elibetvalencia1 Yes it does.

  • Your cool , but this music is disgusting no offense...

  • Cool music! Where can I get the whole album? :D

  • @Kapucins

Folks can download more of my funky home-brewed tunes at my iDisk public folder.

Macs users select menu "Go", then "iDisk", then"Other User's Public Folder". Use "mrfixitrick" as username, no password needed.

PC users, figure it out or e-mail me.

  • Now I fell like banging my head on the table :| ...

  • Loved the song

  • I thought the music came from the disk.

  • Pity that there are no stabilizers - the disc is oscillating up and down so the motor can't be used for CD reading :)

  • Sounds like something from There Will Be Blood

  • Cool...

did you make the music? pretty unusual!

  • @bedaidazak

Thanks..."unusual' is one of the nicer comments about this particular music of mine!

  • @MrfixitRick I am sure if the CD was spinning a bit smoother, the music would sound less unusual ;-)

  • wtf??? creapy music o.0

  • the music looks like the music we played in grade 1to 6 xylophone that fish thing ect xD

  • Thumbs up if you Muted the "Music" at 0:4

  • @theAngelofhevn

Haha, but then you miss the really good part...:)

  • @MrfixitRick wich good part? sorry i think i missed it.

  • @Dbmisteriou

You may have to listen to it several times to get it. ;)

  • Ooh! Civ 4! :)

  • MUSIC IS AWFUL -a-

  • this music is mindrape!

  • That's my favourite song! ;)

  • Oddly entertaining. I first thought the music was from an old 78RPM acetate that was skipping! Yet another use for neodymium magnets.

  • i need some help maybe you could clear this out for me; whenever i try to start the engine i get a " please insert cd in rom drive" and resetting the drive is a pain in the but with the wires put this way, please help im desperate.

  • @transdetendal

I'd check to see whether you may have mis-read the "please insert cd in bum drive" instruction. That may be the cause of your pain in that area.

  • @MrfixitRick ha ha yes i miss read the rticle you wrote it acsuly sead it cant read it yet , DAMN my quik buyng hart ,he he he oh well , it was cheap .

  • Love the music. Wonderful.

  • @madamerotten

Folks either love this music or hate it...it's a strange phenomenon!

I took a chance with using it, and it still gets strong comments, three years later!

  • cant continue to watch this video it feels like im at the circus.

  • Have you considered selling this music to the CIA? This was worse than waterboarding.

  • Hate the music.. Glad for the mute button..

  • coolest thing I seen all week. Thanks..from Vancouver BC

  • stupid, and just terrible NOISE..

  • This guy must be drunk

  • in this video you can hear that people how like the game civilizilation have in everything bad taste

  • That fucking music made me sick..like car sick..I'm going to vomit and shit..like seriously, I think I'm going to throw up. Cause it's like being out at sea with big big waves and your eating too many marshmellows at the same time. Damn, I mean like really sick, I'm not just saying it, I'm serious. I think I just tasted some vomit on my mouth. Haha if you read this whole thing you're fucking stupid.

  • @petefader

Haha, it's ok buddy, some like being in a big sea, and others, well, get seasick.

I guess for folks who are landlubbers, it's advised to turn off the audio on this movie.

The music is a parody of what a hung-over sally ann steampunk street band might sound like the morning after. It was recorded in one take with me playing all instruments at once.

  • @petefader i really like your writing skills :P

  • @petefader do you know who says it he is it soooo you are fucking stupid

  • @blewzguitar shorting out the battery makes a high current. So thats stupid saying it's a fraud go back to school before giving a comment. Or first learn about electro magnetics on ahh blewzguitars?

  • not bad

  • @blewzguitar

The BS is in your head. Get a grip on yourself and google homopolar motor.

  • yups its a homopolar motor

  • @blewzguitar this vid is not fake absolutly u r a sick man.

  • @blewzguitar Are you fucking retarded

  • @blewzguitar Wow, children are amazing in their ignorance to the world around them. You must be quite young to never have built or to have seen a simple homopolar motor before. This is just one of many variations of that motor. You simply need a battery, a wire (sold core works best) and a magnet (Neodymium/Rare Earth works best). You can set it up so the battery stays put and just the wire spins also. There doesn't always have to be a 'mechanism' you can see to cause things to move.

  • @blewzguitar And you are a jealous little kid.

  • holy shit. who ever wrote this song has a special place in hell reserved for him.

  • can u play records like that? lol

  • Nooo, not the Civilization 4 disk! Ah..

  • its a beautiful DIY. As a minor fix for the shaking i would suggest a U shaped wire attached to the lower end of the "engine" :) just to keep it a bit more balanced.

  • world worst cd-player

  • civ 4 :D

  • i think there will be alot of skipping though lol

  • Awesome music <3

  • LOL at all the fuck wits that actually think this thing works or is playing the music, how fucking stupid can you get

  • still need work .. the cd is nearly not skiping hahahaha

  • I love this music, it reminds me of John Cage :)

  • plzzzzzzzz tell me steps to make it

    urgent

  • interesting music production lol

  • does hi played :DD??

  • that song sounds awesome

  • were can I that song I can't find it anyware

  • @moron726

I recorded it myself. I call it "Oddity3" from the Sally Ann Steampunk Band (me!).

I can send it or upload it to folks who would like it. It's a 8 meg apple lossless or a 16 meg aiff file. Message me.

  • @moron726 Just load the wrong soundbank for a midi file. :D

  • Ya need moar power!

  • Some one should sell these as kits. Market them as New Age Dynamic Sculptures(NADS tm). It will go well with the music.

  • @Nomoreidsleft

Perhaps that someone could be you!! Feel free to borrow this idea...

  • It would work better as a record player :P

  • haha this is mini gramophone

  • Awesome machine! But the music makes me wanna kill myself! Freekin' scary music! xD

  • @Menkalo

Some folks do have an adverse response to my eclectic music. My advice is to keep calm, don't keep sharp weapons in the house, and make sure you remember the magic numbers for the 911 help line....

    Then crank it way up!

  • lol i actually liked the music i thought it was funny :D

  • @armegeddon11

It's amazing to see the variety of reactions to this music.

Some like it...and some like it to stop!

  • @MrfixitRick lol

  • I don't know why but this made me laugh really hard.

But this is a cool simple idea.

  • @darkshiv

Thank-you. I have achieved my objective!

It basically is a cool, simple idea that makes folks laugh...

Once folks get beyond their sometimes negative responses to the silly music, that's what I hope they can see!

  • the music is sucky but the thing is AWESOME OMG! nice work

  • yeah i hate that game too........

  • How long will it keep spin, any ideas?

  • @trailkeeper

It will spin for 5 to 10 minutes.

  • @MrfixitRick Ok, I guess the current must be about half and amp or so then.

  • @trailkeeper

That's about right for amps on this design. Some homopolar motors can draw up to 8 amps or so...hard on batteries!! I use a heavy-duty 2650 MAh Duracell and they can get real hot at times.

  • @trailkeeper I could be a bit off now that I think about it. It does depend on any resistance and oxides blocking current flow too I guess. But if the battery drained in 1 hour , the current would then be 2.6A about, so things would have to be calculated around that.

  • As I can get that magnet?

  • @sk8malaka

This neodymium magnet came out of a shake-type flashlight. It's about 5/8 inch.

  • @sk8malaka

Magnets can be ordered online from K&J Magnetics (see "more info" for the link)

  • @MrfixitRick please turn off the music for the sake of the viewers

  • @stevealigheri

There is a really cool feature on your computer called the volume control if you have a problem with that!

  • @MrfixitRick dude the highest rated comment on this video is made by womm8 and the comment's about how terrible the song is.

  • @stevealigheri

Go through the comments and you will find some folks who appreciate the music. If you don't, you know what to do...move on and find something more mainstream!

  • i personally hate the music, its extremely annoying

  • @RYDERkN

So far, about 80% of folks are very annoyed, and about 20% love it and want more. I can live with that. Until I get death threats, that is!!

  • @MrfixitRickSee i like structure to music, i was distracted by the lack of audible methodic beats but i would appreciate the in a sense DIY instrument if there was a structure and it got more climactic, just a thought...

It eventally falls into a beat but there is no dominant melody

  • @RYDERkN

Yes, the trick is that there was no beat machine or background drums to keep beat, and the entire thing was done in one take on a computer keyboard acting as a synth. No overdubbing, all live real time sound. One man band...me!

Like improvised jazz, ya gotta learn to like it??

  • @RYDERkN

Thanks for your comments. I understand what you are saying.

  • maybe put some plastic arms around the base of the magnet so it stays more centered? Just an idea, it looks like its wobbling a bit too much

  • @salleens7

Thanks for the idea. I try to keep the apparatus as basic and simple as possible...at least it kind of wobbles to the music!

  • @MrfixitRick ya thats true. Maybe ill try making one and see what I can do

  • @salleens7

i highly recommend playing with supermagnets!

  • Trippy song. (in a good way) it would be hard to play D&D or any other roleplaying game listening to that tho. oh and about the video all you need is the world's simplest lazer/led to read off the cd. plug that into simple speakers and you have a very simple cd player.

  • Where can i down load song, i need it for a custom map in crysis wars.

  • @EliteXOspartaOX

Do you have a favourite upload site? I don't have a place to put it. It's 17 meg. Let me know where to send.

Or, you could just download the whole video and use just the audio part of it.

  • Damn man, that music was perfect with the vid..

Im sitting here with a big grin after watching ur vid. GJ ;)

  • can you use any type of magnet or it has to be specificly that type??

  • @kamixaki

Generally, I say it must be a strong neodymium magnet. Especially for this experiment. But really, all you need is a strong magnetic field. For example, I have made other homopolar motors run on the back of a large bass speaker placed on it's face.

  • Oh! wow no need speaker? Amazing!!!!

    lol

    Just kidding

    Good job!

  • your band sucks ass

  • the magnet will delete the data on the cd

  • your band is GREAT.

  • @CSPhysics

    Glad you enjoy the music!

Some folks are apparently of the opposite opinion...;)

  • what the hell is that.. a cd dancing..fuck you

  • so annoying

  • watching this and listening to the gnarly music is enough to send anybody to an insane asylum. All that talent wasted on building useless trinkets.

  • what's the title of the song pls ?

  • @l6ST11

That song I call "Oddity 3" by the Sally Ann Steampunk Band, who is me.

  • @MrfixitRick

thnx, i've been looking for that one song that represents my life.

    I found it :)

  • As the title says it's a Simple CD Player Motor. It's not a CD Player god damnit, it's a motor xD

  • why is it spinning clockwise?

how can you determine that movement?

    are the tracks backwards?

  • :) how ingenious

not so accurate, but at least funny

  • Don't CDs have to spin at a faster rate to be read from to maintain a streaming sound? Otherwise you'd have to buffer the music meaning your simple motor just made a CD player more complicated and take longer to play different tracks. Plus lets no forget that is not a stable platform to read from meaning jumpy music. Also Thumbs down for the music choice for this video, its terrible.

  • :) muy bueno

  • well anyone who thinks the music is coming from the cd isnt the smartest of a person. there is no laser, lens, or speaker system. therefore, there is no way to hear sound files from the disc. well just saying...a cd doesnt just magically play when it spins.

  • @0VintageGamer0

    Mine does. :3

  • COOOOL!!! how would you reverse the rotation??

  • can you show us how to make a car from a spoon & match box?

  • wow

  • do people really believe in this. . .? XD

  • watch it on mute and its pretty good

  • ahaha that music

  • haha pretty cool but the sound is gay

  • btw. the sound is crap³

  • neat-o

  • Where will the sound come from there are no speakers .

  • @tommessage

The sound comes from my computer, which is playing a song I recorded.

  • idiot.
