According to Wikipedia, under "Tributes to Michael Hutchence":
"Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins wrote 'Shame' on their 2 June 1998 album, 'Adore'".
I hadn't heard that before... Can anyone out there substantiate that fact; that Billy wrote this for the recently (at the time, of course) deceased singer of INXS?
Wow, I've heard a lot of versions of this song, but this is amazing. I guaruntee noone else out there could come up with a song like this. It's absolutely gorgeous. Thanks BC.
Adore just shows how credible Billy Corgan really is. He could've rode the MASSIVE success of MCIS and churned out similar stuff for another few years, but no. The Pumpkins were constantly evolving and thank god for us that the next evolution was the Adore era.
This era is when I discovered the Pumpkins, I didnt even know they were a rock band before this!
I think it's a shame that people forget this era of the band. James' ebow takes the song to a whole new level, and even though Jimmy is missed, the three percussionists are cool.
esta version en vivo suena mucho más trágica q la del disco, impresionante cancion con un sentimiento derramado a mas no poder, simplemente excelente!!!
A real "shame" (though not too surprising) that their best, most sophisticated, deepest, darkest, most elegant album (Adore) be the album that started their slow descent...considered a failure, even though it still sold nearly 2 million and received some critical acclaim. One of the best albums ever, and Shame is one of its most powerful songs, and all of the songs were even better, witness this video and the one for For Martha (my GOD)...
My favorite Pumpkins song... the fact that this album didn't just proves that people are stupid, rather than proving Corgan lost his inspiration after Mellon Collie (like the lame-o critics with no ears say).
@3lectric15 hellz yes. they don't deserve to have ears!! no that's not fair...
my mum heard me playing Shame too loudly in my bedroom in 1998. She knocked loud on the door and said: "Turn it down, this is Sh-Sh-Sh-Sh-Sh-Shit!" to the tune. I was simultaneously amused and insulted.
@nicholsjoshua15 what d'you want, a medal? I don't care about what your mum had to do, like clinging on to her youth by listening to her sons music. buzz off.
I have always listened to Led Zeppelin, The Bee Gees, David Bowie and The Jefferson Airplane that doesn't mean I'm trying to act old before my time. Good music and good taste are timeless, a song like this transcends age, race, and religion.
Wow, I'm so glad to hear someone say that! This is truly the best Pumpkins song ever. It is an absolutely timeless classic, and it has never ceased having the same overwhelming effect on me every listen. Every note, melody and part is amazing!
Wow...that was a wonderful performance of that song:) Where is this performance from? I really think Adore is going to prove to be as timeless of an album as the rest of the Pumpkin's great albums.

Mellon Collie is their signature album, but Adore is so great, so gloomy and has a unique sound. Smashing Pumpkins, icons of the 90's.

i agree that album is such a master piece. but so many masterpiece are not popular anyway. you can not expect a mass success with such deep songs.
music is still supposed to be an "entertainment"...

I think Iha's best work can be found on the Adore album, IMHO: he makes the guitar sound like something else on practically every song.

screw it... this should have been the first single off of Adore and recorded with more swirly distortion in the chorus like this version.
