But I also prefer NOT having to surrender my personal info on a damned "shopper-card" application, that can be used not only by the store in question to track my purchases but they of course give that info to many other people too. I have nothing to hide, but why should I have "Big Brother" follow me around while I'm shopping for food?

This comment shows your paranoia that everyone is trying to sell your personal info. You don't even have to put your address or email on the application. Just your name and can even tie it to any phone number you choose so you don't even have to carry the card around. I like my purchases being tracked because I get coupons all the time for items I buy and coupons for free items and free gas rewards. BTW, the store I shop at is remodeled and is nicer than Publix in looks and service.
