Try autocross or solo racing or Gymkhana once you will forget about drag racing and straight line racing and best of all you will have the most fun you ever had in your life is your mentality your abilities and your car.
If you are going to compare you must compare based on same price level same year close as possible otherwise would be unfair. Both are on same price level with a difference of $2k.Also with a difference of .02 between them i don't see Elise losing all that races you mention. You said it yourself you have not tested the limitations of your truck and lets hope you never had to.I rather drive a car that is an overkill handling in case i need to.
not only that you talking about racing just take in consideration you use the highway regularly there is always the moron that changes lanes without looking thru the mirrors, the occasional biker that came out of nowhere, the occasional raccoon in the middle of your lane waiting to blow, the idiot that won't let you change lanes and your exit is next, the the semi that just moved right in front of you lifting millions of rocks (there goes the paint)as you can see is not all about racing.
@maximusprr In all of the situations you described, there's nothing wrong with a minivan. Almost nobody is ever going to use the full handling potential of their vehicle, even if they're driving a pickup truck. I have a pickup truck (a Dakota R/T if you're interested), and it can lane-change hard enough to hurt passengers, without breaking a sweat. Doesn't roll, doesn't slide around, no drama.
As for the Elise, I was referring to the common, N-A Elise. The SC is a proper beast.
What Top Gear will never tell you about live rear axles, is that they are actually better at putting power to the ground in a straight line. Because as the car accelerates, the rear suspension compresses. In a car with independent suspension, this creates increased negative camber, reducing the tires' contact with the road. Live axles keep the tires straight and hooked. The live axle only becomes a problem over bumps in turns, where a bump to one tire will affect the other.
@JETZcorp The thing is European are most used to racetracks with curbs, turns, hills, even jumps not drag racing in fact the way to really test a car abilities is not in straight line because you don't drive in straight line all the time. And that is an area where many European cars and some Japanese excel. If you ever driven E30M3 you know what 'm talking about.Sure he proves that by modding you can accomplish some improvement but many European cars can do that out of the assembly line.
@maximusprr You can definitely tell which cars came from which geographical area. Because in America, if you want to go drag racing it'll cost you about $20 or so and you're in for the day. A track day on a road course is something like $100/hour. The vast majority of the roads are straight, because you're either in a suburban grid, or on the freeway which goes straight from city-to-city. Buy a Lotus Elise in America, and you'll lose about ten races just getting to the nearest twisty road.
@JETZcorp you don't have to go that far as twisty roads to know which is better a simple change of lanes in aggressive angle in the wrong car could spell disaster

@rorschach775 You are seriously misinformed. Every car company rates their cars based on flywheel horsepower. They ALL will make less horsepower at the wheels, which is what a dyno measures. That means ALL car companies are liars in your book.

Typical TG review of an American car. That car can wipe the floor with the M3 even with the live axle if you know how to drive. I wonder, do they drag out the rolling road for every european car they review? Not a chance.
@VirtualSuperSoldier So true, I can't give your comment enough of a thumbs up. No matter the American car, they find something wrong with it. The problem with the Ford GT.....you can't open the doors when parked next to another car. I wanted to throw my remote at the TV when they said that.

You do know dyno's find the power at the wheels, that is less than the power at the engine or flywheel and that's where they get the numbers for the "500" from.
@TheSkilltrain the 500 in the name GT500 has nothing to do with the horsepower rating. Carrol Shelby picked 500 cause it was higher then any other number currently being used as a car name at the time. the GT350 was named for the number of feet or steps (depending on the day the story is being told) between Carrol Shelby's office and the building where the cars were being built. BTW: GT350s are small block v8s (289). GT500s are big block v8s (427/428/429).
@MichaelHeadland It gets old after everyone in the world does it all the time, then relies on our relief efforts for their next meal and our military to protect them
Another problem, they tested the HP at the wheels when the manufacturers measure at the crank. ANY car you dyno (not "rolling road", wtf is that shit) will have less hp on a dyno than what the manufacturer says.
Back in the day, the big 3 actually underrated the HP rating of their cars for insurance purposes, i.e. they say the car made 350 when it actually made 390.
@LamboK28992 very true, as it is still being done today. many engines were under rated for insurance reasons (and in many cases is still done today). the 67 427 corvette was rated at 435hp, but the dyno sheet cut off 1500RPM before redline to hide the real horsepower peak. A good example today is the new 2013 Shelby GT500 is under rated at 650hp. in actuality it make 670hp.
@CamaroAmx Chevorlet is famous for under rating the horsepower on the camaro and firebird so it won't be too close to the corvette. the 93 Z28 was rated at 275hp. in actuality it made nearly 300hp. but since the corvette was rated around 335hp, GM fudged the number for the camaro/firebird so it be so close to the Vette. It is an unwritten rule at GM that no other car can be faster or have more power then the corvette. which is part of the reason the Buick GNX was only produced for 1 year.
Everyone knows clarkson is a secret wannabe American who just bashes them because he is covering up his own inferiority complex. Like how people who are hiding the fact they are gay often say all this shit about hating gays. For fucks sake, clarkson's favorite car is the Ford GT, he has bought two of them.
what's that test of horse power? don't you need a proper room with injection of air in the turbo, and for the cooling stuff to get a more correct value???
screw anyone from this show, I am American, and if I ever run into anyone from this show I would take great pride in beating them till the cops pull me off. I would do the world a great favor by killing them...They are to the U.K. what the K.K.K. is to America, racist idiots who spread hate around the world...next time Clarkson shows up in America he better have a lot of bodyguards or he will be killed
@CHKDISBRK If that is a "Standard American Comment" there is most likely a reason for it, don't you think? You must be one of the weak minded Brits that actually listen to him and agree with what he says even though you have never been here or met any Americans....same as the KKK that dislike black people they have never met...CLARKSON THE U.K.K.K. LEADER
So the Mustang isn't an M3, it was design to be an "every man's" sport car. Jeremy is always going on how the USA builds "rubbish" sport cars. First he has a bias which we all know, second like I said it was built for everyone. It's incrediblly easy to tune the car to get WAY more out of the car then what you can when you buy it on the show room floor. It was designed that way. I can buy a base Mustang and over time MAKE it a GT500 by buying all the extra parts. Not everyone has the 40K to start
The 2012 Mustang with solid rear axel is a very good handling car. Go ahead and read the magazine ratings, they were very impressed with it's road handling.
BTW my all stock 2004 Mustang GT is the best hadling and most powerfull car that I have ever driven. I trust in it road races into and through the curves.
Americans, will always build worser cars then Europeans.
But I don't hate American cars because they are just so fucking fun to drive. Europeans are more serious though when it comes to Car building. SO FAR.
I turned away from BBB top gear and started watching american top gear. the huge dif is that american cars have to be regulated so much that its totaly not fair. also we are being put up against supercars that cost 300k plus. look at our zr1. 100k and will almost eat anything in its path.
i like top gear but when are they gong to realize american car makers make cars that AMERICANS want not wat pompas britts like. ford did put a independent axle in the terminator and the mustang world went ape shit! they were pron to axle failer and they cost to much to make as strong as a good ol fab 9. all these new cars dont take a driver to drive with the stability control, tcs, abs, bla bla bla. give me a car that u can turn it off and it takes skill 2 get it around the track
it's my understanding that dynos measure wheel horse power and flywheel horse power... so 447whp is actually pretty good concidering mechanical loss of 15-18%
@alamrisa They are. They know a lot about cars, but their program is not for car reviews, but a hilarious show that doesn't make much sense. I love it.
What i don't like is people without personality that take what they say as completely true and spread their (Not so true/close to reality) word all around the internet.
Has Hammond lost his mind? Wheel horsepower is a lot different from engine horsepower, which is what manufacturers advertise. Commonly known fact. Come on man, dont try to play down the 500 horses.
They should have mentioned that any car will read a lower horsepower on a dyno (rolling road) than it's factory rating. Factories rate cars at brake or crank horsepower measured directly at the engine crankshaft and a dyno reads horsepower transmitted from the engine through the transmission, driveshaft, differential, axles and tires. Horsepower is lost through heat and friction at each step.
@AdangerousRETARD This is simple. On the road do you use power direct from the engine OR it have to go trough the crankshaft, differential and wheels? Easy?
@ardvark84 no car manufacturer does this they list the horsepower of the ENGINE! that is the standard, if they list the horsepower at the wheel they say "whp" not "hp." you are now a smarter human being. you're welcome
@AdangerousRETARD Every mecanical component brings friction and loss of power. Engine itself has a lot of friction as you know. It should be "whp" and the fact that it isn't doesn't mean that this is right.
Everybody thinks Muscle cars are ONLY good in strait lines. This one is, yes. But new models and different muscle cars are not only good in strait lines any more. They were in the past. Just check the Nürburgring times for different American cars and you will realize they beat a lot of cars that are a lot more expensive then they are...but yes this car at this year model is a death trap. The Newer model is a lot better. And to everybody says its a cheap interior...seriously? If you're racing yo
Tenho um mustang azul 1969, nunca me separei deste carro, é uma obra de arte, mas nao mantenho o meu original, ele tem 950 hp de força e é uma atração no meu estado, MT
galoon, yes there are curves and turns on many roads, but to drive on a public highway in such a manner that you can appreciate the difference in independent rear suspension and a solid axle would be irresponsible. The mustang is designed to handle well and have plenty of acceleration which can be enjoyed. My objection is the Top Gear folks proclaiming the mustang as terrible because it is not designed for a road course race track but rather for enjoyment on the public highways.
@Janeconnerallen Yes what you say is corect however, on the assumption of smooth roads. If the roads are bumpy and potholed (as they often are in many countries e.g. Australia and the UK) your ride, as well as your grip will be poorer, made even worse if it is wet. This will cause issues during driving sessions as well as in emergency situations.
HELLO6761- I see in the video that they measure the HP using a mobile dyno. The car rear wheels are turning the dyno so I assume that is where it was measured
The engine's horsepower is advertised as BHP not HP at the rear wheels. These guys on Top Gear are being a bit dishonest. I know they have a bias against American cars so what else should be expect.
@Janeconnerallen I don't think that 447 horsepower is at the rear wheels, since an F10 BMW M5 with a rated 560bhp makes 444bhp at the wheels which translates to 573bhp at the crankshaft.
@10243612B The figures are from an article on 'worldcarfans' a tuning company tested the M5 on the dyno. I just find it strange that a car with 60 less hp has virtually the same at the wheels.
@10243612B The figures are from an article on the website 'worldcarfans'. I just find it strange that a car producing 60 more bhp than the Shelby has the same power at the wheels.
The evaluation is just silly. The Mustang is a street car, not a formula race car. The roads in the US are 99% straight and nobody in their right ming would try to corner at the limit of adhesion. The fact that it has a solid axle is a " so what" factor because there is no place it is going to really matter. The car should have been evaluated in the environment that it will be used in.
@Janeconnerallen I don't know about everywhere else, but in my part of the US there are plenty of turns. All SCCA race courses have turns, too--and here especially is where a solid rear axle will be a handicap to any driver who chooses a Mustang to race. If the car had been evaluated in the environment it's used in every day, who'd be able to tell the difference in cornering between it and a Toyota Prius?
i love so many people here keep on saying stuff against top gear when really, lets face it, they are probably a lot more experienced and better at judging this car than 99% of the people commenting here are ;) I mean come on please, they evaluate cars for living and you really hate on them for making one or two mistakes? ... fucking children. If you are so much better become an engineer and develop cars. If this ford would be so good more people would buy it
@shittalker1989 Top Gear is as scripted as Jersey Shores. Entertaining no doubt but Top Gear is to automotive journalism as Jeffrey Dahmer is to fine dinning!
@abuhamza360 Top Gear just follows a script that's written by non car dudes to be as dramatic (if not biased) as possible. Facts would just get in the way of that but if you want a show that's real, watch MotorWeek and such. They're boring as hell but this just proves you can't have it both ways. Real is boring.
If Hamster just said "LOOK IT SAYS 500 HP AND REALLY HAS... UH, 500 HP" <----That's not a show anyone wants to see. What would be dramatic about that?
@shittalker1989 Dude, top gear is great fun, but they are not a reliable source, come on, a bad quality jaguar "has character" and a good american car "isn't enough" while they compare them to cars 100k more expensive? They're a comedy program about cars, but not car reviewers.
@machone7I Look I agree to some degree, but some people here keep on writing facts which make absolutely no sense. Its a great show and the car is not that great and yes, they do talk a lot of non sense, but not everything is wrong ;)
@shittalker1989 Of course, they do a lot of great things. They make a great program, overall. As an example, Fifth Gear is more reliable for car reviews but it's just boring. The problem is too many people think that what they say is 100% true, and repeat it once and once again all over the internet.
@TeknoPL hahahahaha you gotta be kidding right? Are you really comparing a Ford Gt500 with super sport cars, each with prices on average 2-3 times higher than the ford? Allright, so first of all not many people have the kind of money to buy supersport cars and additonally a pagani is not known for its level of comfort. The cars you listed except maybe porsche or in some instances lamborghini, are not 'every day cars'. Please tell me you werent serious
@shittalker1989 I was serious, in fact I was hoping you weren't while typing that last sentence about ford. There is something called potential owned by gt500 and thus this car certainly can't be called 'every day car' but well, it doesn't have to be someone's liking.
@TeknoPL when i said everyday car, i was talking about suspension, gear box, weight, technology, engine, etc. Obviously the ford isnt an everyday car, but compared to a pagani it is ;)
@shittalker1989 Yea I know manufacturers I've listed produce supercars, not casual cars, and supercars have nothing to do with this ford, but either way I wouldn't call shelby an everyday car, it.. just.. shouldn't.. do.. that.. :p
@Expendablexxxx what ever you think cock sucker my friend has a mustang. And it has over 200000 miles on It I think you are just jelus because you have a shot box Toyota and mommy and daddy won't let you get a real car

You do know dyno's find the power at the wheels, that is less than the power at the engine or flywheel and that's where they get the numbers for the "500" from.
TheSkilltrain 1 week ago
@TheSkilltrain the 500 in the name GT500 has nothing to do with the horsepower rating. Carrol Shelby picked 500 cause it was higher then any other number currently being used as a car name at the time. the GT350 was named for the number of feet or steps (depending on the day the story is being told) between Carrol Shelby's office and the building where the cars were being built. BTW: GT350s are small block v8s (289). GT500s are big block v8s (427/428/429).

LamboK28992 1 week ago
@LamboK28992 very true, as it is still being done today. many engines were under rated for insurance reasons (and in many cases is still done today). the 67 427 corvette was rated at 435hp, but the dyno sheet cut off 1500RPM before redline to hide the real horsepower peak. A good example today is the new 2013 Shelby GT500 is under rated at 650hp. in actuality it make 670hp.
CamaroAmx 1 week ago
@CamaroAmx Chevorlet is famous for under rating the horsepower on the camaro and firebird so it won't be too close to the corvette. the 93 Z28 was rated at 275hp. in actuality it made nearly 300hp. but since the corvette was rated around 335hp, GM fudged the number for the camaro/firebird so it be so close to the Vette. It is an unwritten rule at GM that no other car can be faster or have more power then the corvette. which is part of the reason the Buick GNX was only produced for 1 year.

Not everyone has the 40K to start

it's my understanding that dynos measure wheel horse power and flywheel horse power... so 447whp is actually pretty good concidering mechanical loss of 15-18%

@alamrisa So how is 447 whp is "pretty good" when it should be 464-470 with 15-18% mechanical loss?
ExRussian86 1 week ago
@ExRussian86 dude do the math (.15)(500) then substract from 500 = 425whp given that it's actually 15% loss and not higher

500hp - 10.6%loss = 447 whp

koropaniwladca 2 weeks ago
They should have mentioned that any car will read a lower horsepower on a dyno (rolling road) than it's factory rating. Factories rate cars at brake or crank horsepower measured directly at the engine crankshaft and a dyno reads horsepower transmitted from the engine through the transmission, driveshaft, differential, axles and tires. Horsepower is lost through heat and friction at each step.
damrak1969 2 weeks ago
@damrak1969 there is typically a 15% loss in power from the crankshaft to the wheels so it makes 500hp at the crank EASY
AdangerousRETARD 2 weeks ago
@AdangerousRETARD This is simple. On the road do you use power direct from the engine OR it have to go trough the crankshaft, differential and wheels? Easy?
ardvark84 1 week ago
@ardvark84 no car manufacturer does this they list the horsepower of the ENGINE! that is the standard, if they list the horsepower at the wheel they say "whp" not "hp." you are now a smarter human being. you're welcome
AdangerousRETARD 1 week ago
@AdangerousRETARD Every mecanical component brings friction and loss of power. Engine itself has a lot of friction as you know. It should be "whp" and the fact that it isn't doesn't mean that this is right.

galoon, yes there are curves and turns on many roads, but to drive on a public highway in such a manner that you can appreciate the difference in independent rear suspension and a solid axle would be irresponsible. The mustang is designed to handle well and have plenty of acceleration which can be enjoyed. My objection is the Top Gear folks proclaiming the mustang as terrible because it is not designed for a road course race track but rather for enjoyment on the public highways.
Janeconnerallen 2 weeks ago
@Janeconnerallen Yes what you say is corect however, on the assumption of smooth roads. If the roads are bumpy and potholed (as they often are in many countries e.g. Australia and the UK) your ride, as well as your grip will be poorer, made even worse if it is wet. This will cause issues during driving sessions as well as in emergency situations.

HELLO6761- I see in the video that they measure the HP using a mobile dyno. The car rear wheels are turning the dyno so I assume that is where it was measured
Janeconnerallen 3 weeks ago
The engine's horsepower is advertised as BHP not HP at the rear wheels. These guys on Top Gear are being a bit dishonest. I know they have a bias against American cars so what else should be expect.
Janeconnerallen 3 weeks ago
@Janeconnerallen I don't think that 447 horsepower is at the rear wheels, since an F10 BMW M5 with a rated 560bhp makes 444bhp at the wheels which translates to 573bhp at the crankshaft.
Hello6761 3 weeks ago
@Hello6761 Shelby's do put 447 to the tire, these ones do. New one makes a lot more power than this

@10243612B The figures are from an article on 'worldcarfans' a tuning company tested the M5 on the dyno. I just find it strange that a car with 60 less hp has virtually the same at the wheels.

Hello6761 3 weeks ago
The evaluation is just silly. The Mustang is a street car, not a formula race car. The roads in the US are 99% straight and nobody in their right ming would try to corner at the limit of adhesion. The fact that it has a solid axle is a " so what" factor because there is no place it is going to really matter. The car should have been evaluated in the environment that it will be used in.
Janeconnerallen 3 weeks ago
@Janeconnerallen I don't know about everywhere else, but in my part of the US there are plenty of turns. All SCCA race courses have turns, too--and here especially is where a solid rear axle will be a handicap to any driver who chooses a Mustang to race. If the car had been evaluated in the environment it's used in every day, who'd be able to tell the difference in cornering between it and a Toyota Prius?
galoon 3 weeks ago
i love so many people here keep on saying stuff against top gear when really, lets face it, they are probably a lot more experienced and better at judging this car than 99% of the people commenting here are ;) I mean come on please, they evaluate cars for living and you really hate on them for making one or two mistakes? ... fucking children.
What would be dramatic about that?
acs4llc 1 week ago
@shittalker1989 Dude, top gear is great fun, but they are not a reliable source, come on, a bad quality jaguar "has character" and a good american car "isn't enough" while they compare them to cars 100k more expensive? They're a comedy program about cars, but not car reviewers.

@shittalker1989 Of course, they do a lot of great things. They make a great program, overall. As an example, Fifth Gear is more reliable for car reviews but it's just boring. Please tell me you werent serious
shittalker1989 1 week ago
@shittalker1989 I was serious, in fact I was hoping you weren't while typing that last sentence about ford. There is something called potential owned by gt500 and thus this car certainly can't be called 'every day car' but well, it doesn't have to be someone's liking.
