  • so demondogg55 how did you end up with his autopsy pics anyway? They were sealed a long time ago and kept locked away from the public.

  • pretty heavy accident here.... can't believe he survived this horror crash and died at daytona 01 from maybe half the impact

  • this wreck was one of the reasons they called him 'swervin ervin'.

    RIP DALE

  • Kinda strange that Sterlin was part of this crash and also part of the crash that killed Big E.

  • I agree with MortifiedPenguin275 this crash was WAY worse thin his 01 Daytona crash he should have died in this one(not trying to be a dick)but this was WAY worse.........and NMO the best guys we have in a post Dale Sr nascar is Kyle Bush and Tony stewart(yes Tony is an asshole and that's why I don't like him but that guy can drive)and as for Kyle.....I like him I like his driving and his passion to(would have loved to see Dale Sr and Kyle race together)

  • Your calling Tony the ass hole? LMFAO!!!! At the Dream 100 this year Tony signed countless autographs, while alot of drivers were getting in the "zone" for the race Tony was out signing autographs. Kyle Busch on the other hand..... Every time I have seen him it's like he sticks his nose up whenever someone asks him for an autograph.

  • yes I'm calling him an asshole Ive ben watching him seance his Rockie back before he won his presses brickyard 400 he would throw a fit because he didn't win like the 2002 brickyard he crashed and then the official went over to help him and Tony is all jerking around and was like pushing the guy(and I believe at that same race he push a reporter he's a spoiled brat(well you could say that about alot of those guys really)but Tony is a fucking dick and that's why I don't like him

  • I agree with you slay and kyle busch is the new Earnhardt. He is so much more talented than the others the way he has nerve and drives the car in much deeper than anyone else. Look at his record of top 2's in all divisions amazing. When the car are equal its no contest. Your right about tony as well. Great driver but he was a dick. He had a bad case of "little man's disease". He stil does but he is trying to clean up his act to attract sponsors for his future teams.

  • amen.......FINELLY someone who See's how it is man you are right I like Kyle9not enough to buy his murch or anything)but I like him that kid can fucking drive

  • I always thought this was Earnhardt's worst wreck ever even more than the one at pocono years earlier. This lick was much harder than the one that killed him. Why did he survive? simple. THE SEAT BELT HELD. True he was busted up but the seat belt held. This thing that killed him at daytona was the seat belt let go and his chest hit the stern wheel. That would kill you in a passenger car at 30mph if your seat belt broke and you hit the stern wheel with your chest and chin. sabatoge maybe?

  • His chest didn't hit anything and it was proved the seatbelt breaking wasn't the cause of his death. He died BECAUSE the seatbelt held just long enough after he hit, and his head shot forward(like when you get whiplash) and his brainstem sepperated from his brain aka basial skull fracture.

  • 4Tracer i saw the incar pictures on the net and the damm stern wheel was bent from the impact of his chest. Also their were pics of the broken seat belt so stuff it about chit you know nothing about. The inside rumors were that it was sobotage but no way nascar could let it be known that dale passed that way. The gay france/hendrick/born rich drivers/fixed racing politics has ruined racing. Rick hendrix leukemia dissapeared after his presidential pardon for bribing honda officials u idiot.

  • I'm the idiot? LMFAO..... They had to cut the damn belts to get him out of the car!!! Trust me, I know exactly what happened, I have read the autopsy reports a couple of times.

  • Also the autopsy pictures clearly show a huge hole/gash in his chin area. You dont get that from a basal skull fracture. He got it from massive impact with the stern wheel. I want to state for the record Earnhardt was the greatest of his generation and in the top 3 of all time maybe the best ever. I didnt want to get graphic but i think the racing community was done a misjustice for the cover up.

  • Yes, his chin had struck the steering wheel. But that is what causes a basial skull fracture fyi.

After researching a bit more, I have found out that there was a part in the seatbelt that did in fact break, but was not the cause of the death because it was the lap belt, not the shoulder harness. The Earnhardt case was far from covered up, it was just that the media eventually got tired of a regular southern man(not the driver but the man) getting the attention he deserved.

  • That's fascinating considering that the autopsy reports have been sealed by a Volusia County judge.

  • No they haven't, they seald the autopsy photos and the audio....

The autopsy was allowed to be released. They can't hold the report, because it is a public record.

  • I was there and I thought he was dead.

  • Notice 3:10 when Earnhardt is flipping and something, possibly a tire comes off and goes directly under the #5 of Terry Labonte's car and stays hooked until the car came to a hault. Never did notice that until looking at it in slow motion.. Poor Terry made it threw the damn thing and the only thing he couldn't avoid was debris lol.

  • I don't want to sound rude, but he should have died from THIS.

  • Earnhardt was one tough son of a bitch. I don't think that there is a single NASCAR fan who doesn't miss him.

  • As far as attitude, Dale Earnhardt was as tough as they came. Back when he drove the #2 he flipped, broke his leg, walked away and raced the next week. Then this. It's a shame he died. No driver will ever have the mix of talent, sheer force of will and cool confidence in a stock car that Dale had. Especially that confidence. He knew he was the best and he was.

  • What the hell was Ernie Irvin thinking?

  • the same thing ward was thinking 2 years later--its eery how similar the crashes are

  • Without any help on the outside, you can sometimes get a sidedraft and hang on by cutting close to the inside line. However there is a very high chance of contact as shown in this instance.

  • its weird that dale survived this but not the 2001 crash?

  • ino right

  • The sad part of this crash was that that particular #4 Morgan McClure Chevy was his best super speedway car, that thing was a beast... but One-Eye Irvan destroyed that car and many others in this wreck.

  • Remember who drove the 4 car from 1990 to mid-'93? Swervin Irvan... Actually they won a bunch of superspeedway races back then...

  • it's amazing how he survived this, but then died in the 500 in an accident that looked much less severe than this one.

  • in 2001, he wasnt wearing the proper safety devices. He chose not to.

  • Dale Raced the next week, even with a broken sternum. He was the best ever. Never will there be another race car driver like Dale.

  • He did...for seven laps at Indianapolis where he had used 2 of his 5 test sessions for that year. He came back a week after that at watkins glen and won the pole and led before being over taken in the latter part of the race. So your got dang right that there will NEVER be another race car driver in nascar quite like Dale Earnhardt.

  • but didint dale die how was he walking after the crash

  • nope that was 2001 daytona 500 turns 3 and 4

  • the main thing about the 2001 crash is dale hit the wall HEAD ON, complete right angle to the wall, square head on, most of his speed here continued down the track and not into the wall. DEF looks alot worse though.

  • that could have very well been his last; I thought for sure that crash would kill him. obviously, I was wrong. Too bad he didn't make it in the '01 Daytona R.I.P Dale.

  • It always gets to me..this looks worse than THE CRASH

  • yeah but at Daytona he wasnt wearing the HANZ device.

  • wasnt wearing it here either

  • did anyone notice that it looked like earnhardt picked up 20 mph when he turned sideways?

  • anyone notice the Tire going in front of Labontes Car

  • I think it actually got stuck under his car until he gets to turn 1

  • No well if It got under his car he couldnt have gone. Although i think i know what you mean because it lifted his front tires up and couldnt turn. then it just kinda slipped out his front bumper

  • i feel like this is eerily( if thats how you spell it) similar to neil bonnet. bad accident in talladega, and then they got killed in daytona( or was it talladega for bonnet?) even though bonnets was the next year after he went into the catchfence and this was 5 before dales got killed, theres something that reminds me of bonnet

  • that's very true it was as you say

  • it was Daytona that Bonnett died at.

  • did anyone notice that ever bad wreck dale is in starling mmarlin is invloved

  • I never noticed this before, but watch Terry Labonte's car hit the debris!!!

  • Looks like a tire. But yeah sort of funny how it goes under the front of the car.

  • I had forgotten about that, too. He ended up on a wheel and tire.

  • that was alot harder hit then daytona

  • Not even close. The car was still moving pretty fast after it bounced off the wall. Heck, Marlin probably took a harder hit in the wall! The scarier parts was certainly the secondary hits he took (something I have not seen since). There have been several crashes similar to this since (Bill Elliott in 1998, Scott Riggs in 2005 come to mind).

  • Both this wreck and Bill Elliott wreck in 98 happened because somebody got on the apron and lost control. I remember Ward Burton was the culprit in that wreck

  • i wished that he walked away from the 2001 DAYTONA 500 but as we all know, he didn't. it's still hard today. 8 years have gone by and you still get that big feeling that he's still here but he's not?! it hurts. it hurts real bad! another thing is that if it wasn't for treasa messing things up like she did maybe jr. would still be at DEI. but he's with a totally different team and he's doing a hell of alot better without treasa!

  • that onboard of marlin is brutal.

  • TO ALL !!! i dont know who was in the cars then but the 28 touched the 4 and it hit the 3 all the blame falls on the 28 story finished!!!!

  • Ernie Irvan was in the 28 back then, and yes he was to blame. He made a career out of causing wrecks like that, after all his nickname was Swirvin Irvin.

  • Dale Earnhardt made a career out of causing wrecks as well!

  • if you look marlin came down on ervin. stop triying to kill the earnhardts

  • marlin's the one who killed earnhardt, but if kenny schrader wasn't on the outside of dale, he would've hit the wall at a 45 degree angle instead of a 90 degree angle and would still be walking today

  • c'mon! no one "killed' Earnhardt! it was a racing accident, and you cannot place the blame on anyone!

  • soooooooo youre blaming ken scharder for racing

    dumbass

  • no. i'm not blaming anyone

  • I really would like to know what the fuck Irvan was thinking. He had like close to half a car under Marlin and still decided that he wanted to "get in behind Marlin". Its no wonder why he was never a good driver.

  • marlin came down on irvan. stop trashing irvan for no reason he would have won the '94 championship over earnhardt had he not gotten hurt

  • Looked like his initial hit here was much worse than his fatal hit at Daytona.

  • believe me, it was

  • Good ole' Swervin Irvan.

  • if someone can find a video of any big one from the 90's without Mark Martin being involved in the wreck please let me know lol

i do feel sorry for him, he gets cought up in every one

  • one of the big ones from the 94 spring race at dega, or the big one from either 93 race at dega

  • Irvan get booed big time the following week at Indy...I was there

  • that wasn't Irvan, it was Sterlin Marlin. Get ur facts straight ha

  • Irvan was in the 28

  • Irvin hit Marlin into Dale

  • on my next crash comp.!

  • They would meet again 5 years later...

  • Not true the hans device existed in formula racing, it just wasn't required yet

  • if Dale hadnt been so stubborn and worn the HANS device he would still be here

  • There was only one driver (Jeff Burton) who was wearing the HANS device in the 2001 Dayona 500, so it wasn't just Dale.

  • Also, the HANS device was relatively new, and wasn't mandated in NASCAR after the death of Blaise Alexander from ARCA.

  • how could dale walk away from this but he didnt in 2001 the wreck at daytona i was there and he died but he walked away from this ewas the wrose wreck of his life

  • I agree. Daytona was a simple nose tap (and I do mean "tap" as far as you can get it at 200 mph) and slide, and not even head on. This one almost destroyed the car after a hard head, spin, on and later a T-Bone.

I guess luck has so much to do with it.

  • no theres already to many night races as it is...we dont need anymore night races.

  • ken squier was a great commentator

  • should bring him back, Jerry Punch stinks.

  • vury true

  • If you look at how Earnhardt bounces off the wall on this, it looks exactly like the way that Michael McDowell bounced off the wall at Texas. Earnhardt just didn't proceed to barrel-roll down the track

  • You'd think that if any crash was gonna kill him, this would be it. Just brings back the mystical argument that there was some sort of situation with Dale's belt at Daytona.

  • #3 will always be #1. tough man...miss ya dale...

  • how did daytona kill him? Head on into a wall at 190? wtf? rip big E

  • Rusty Wallace made contact with Sterling Marlin, who made contact with Sterling, which got into Earnhardt, another car forced Earnhardt up right into the wall. Which is just a concidence since Ernie Irvan actually caused this wreck and Marlin was just a victim.

  • this is probably the most gruesome crash ive ever seen

  • this wreck is the reason nascar added the 'earnhardt bar', center vertical bar in the middle of the windshield.

  • Ernie Irvan is the record holder for most wrecks caused.

  • anwser: yes it did, the race did end due to darkness.

  • This crash happened on lap 118 and the race ended on lap 129, did the race end because it got too dark?

  • It had rained earlier in the day, and thus the race was running later than it already would have, and this wreck only exacerbated things. If I remember correctly, most of the race wasn't shown live because they were out of their time slot and CBS didn't continue the coverage, choosing instead to show it on tape. I could be wrong though, it's been a long time now.

  • This is only my opinion, but Talladega needs to have lights.

  • I agree with you 100%.

  • I think that's an opinion shared by many. An Autumn Monday night race at 'Dega - up against MNF - would be the bomb, and I'm sure many would agree. I know it's gonna happen eventually, as more and more night racing is added to the schedule.

  • There are some video games that have night racing at Talladega, which looks really cool, and is a good way to promote a track to add lights.

  • the tire under labonte's car was stuck, and he would've made it thru the wreck too. but when the tire rolled under the car, something broke and caused him to crah in the inside of turn 1.

  • Pause at 3:10.Terry Labontes car[the one near Dale Earnhart's rear end}hits a tire

  • Ouch I remember watching this Dx. If not for this wreck he wouldv'e won the championship, and probably 1997 too.

  • i remember how this race was rain delayed so long that ABC decided not to show it till Monday (in jacksonville FL). found out about the earnhardt wreck by watching RPM2night.

  • CBS actually. Never got to watch it in the CINCINNATI area.

  • That was the hardest hit that ive ever seen

  • same thing as bill eilott in the 1998 diehard 500

  • Also very similar to Scott Riggs's 2005 crash.

  • Now thats the racing I remember.

  • Earnhardt also gets hit in pretty much the same spot that pressely hits him at by Derrick Cope a few seconds earlier. Like I said you can see a HUGE dent on the left side of the roof where Earnhardt sat so he was fortunate to survive this... If I remember correctly Earnhardt sustain some broken ribs, fractured clavical, i think he broke his wrist but i dont know off hand exactly every injury he sustaind but to get out and waive to the crowd after that... WOW!

  • Broke his sternum and collarbone. He had a bunch of injuries after this crash. But Dale Earnhardt "One Tough Customer" is still true, regardless if he passed or not. He was the original "Grit your teeth and buckle down" racer. And he went out the next week and got the pole at Watkins Glen! Damn straight.

  • Dale Earnhardt almost died in this wreck. when hes sliding on his side, he gets slammed into by Robert Pressely in the roof and since he was sliding on the driver side, that majority of the impact went into where Earnhardt is sitting on the driver side portion of the roof first and because Earnhardt sat so low in his seat he avoided alot of the force and impact from Pressely who was at doin about 185 mph you can see when the car comes to rest that the whole left side of the roof is caved in

  • took his belts off early??? get a life idiots.

  • He might have been a redneck but that redneck was smarter then you. I don't see getting rich after being born poor. He's one of the smartest and greatest man ever to walk this earth only 2ed to Jesus. Plus he did'nt loosen his seat belt nore was it was a seat belt failer. He was'nt wearing the HANS neck system, it had nothing to do with the seat belt. It was just time for him to go God thought it was time and he had a great life. A lot better then yours silverstannggt2007.

  • if you dont agree that dale sr took off his belts early like im sure he did for 20+ years of racing then your an idiot. nascar has safety regulations that have to be followed, his seat belts couldnt have been "faulty" you jackasss

  • You are the idiot. The seat belt was in fact not working properly. How stupid do you think Earnhardt was? Only people like you wouldn't wear a seatbelt going 190 miles per hour.

  • rock on

  • NO. He died from a crash in the 2001 Daytona 500 From Basal Skull Fracture in turn 4.

  • are you a freakin moron? Obviously you dont need to be watching this because you have not a clue what's going on.

  • Dont know what race your watching, Swirvin' Irvan caused that one

  • when i look back on this comment i regret it

dale ans sterling were the best, i did not mean to be offencive

  • I don't know how he survived that. He hit the wall head on!

  • yeah, but he didnt come to an almost complete stop, like in Daytona the roll-over disipated the impact

  • It was just too much like 2001 at Daytona.

  • he was by no means a candy ass, he was one of the toughest racers of all time, i am a gordon fan (go ahead, make your stupid comments, but he is one of the best of all time) but dale sr was a great driver and it wasnt the crash that killed him, it was the fact that he took off his seat belts early to get to victory lane to see his teamate/son, if you dont believe that than you are an idiot

  • Im not gonna make a stupid comment, Gordon is one of the best of all time, I just dont like him but thats another topic....but about him taking off his seatbelt?????, his seat belt tore, it would be almost impossible to tear if it wasnt pulled tot by his body

  • why the hell would he take off his seatbelt at fricken 190 mph?? he wouldnt make that stupid of a decision.

  • ahah you have no proof of that how can you call us idiots... lol iv read they official reviews and seen the pictures from inside the car after they crash, they seatbelt was faulty, i seen about 5 pictures of a torn seat belt with alot of blood on it, and i read the list of injury's he had.. 1 was internal decapitation .. i would have hate to been ken Shrader that day and have to see that..

  • Your right, the pictures tell it all really.

DW has actually recently spoken about what Kenny saw that day (based off what kenny told him). I can not even begin to think or really ever want to think what that was like for him.

  • Whoa, where is that story? Id love to read that.

  • Not sure if your replying to me or not but since it told me you did... It was an interview for ESPN Ultimate NASCAR. I can't remember which one it was but you can try to look for that.

  • you are about the only perspn on Youtube that actually KNOWS the truth of how he died. I know a first respnder that was on the scene of the crash. His belts were simply laying there, open, unbuckled. He was torn up real bad down on the floor (I'll spare the gory details). HE traditionally un-did his belts during red flags (which this race had).. he never buckled it back up.

  • I also knew about the seatbelts... sort of, lol. I thought he didn't mount them right since that's what I heard. At any rate I've posted in several videos that his lap belt broke but no one seems to believe it. The wreck was not among the hardest hits ever so you had to know something didn't happen the way it should.

  • Finally somone knows that the lap-belt did break. That was still a hard impact but the broken lap-belt caused the fatal injuries and not because he didnt wear a HANS device, it wouldnt of saved him. And about this crash is it just me or would he had won his 8th title in either 96' or even 97?.

  • Well I'm not actually saying for sure whether the lap belt broke from not wearing it right, or if he loosened the belts, but there was a clear picture of a broken belt.

  • well just from common sense the belts had to be pulled tot for them to snap. but yeah the pictures to clearly show a torn belts

  • Dude, what the hell is tot?

  • lol sorry I may not me spelling it right but it means pulled tightly or strecthed tightly

  • lol it's taught.

  • lol thanks....thats why Im still in school lol

  • are you stupid? You need to take a look at the report that they did and see the bloody broken lap belts. Why the hell would he not be finished the race yet and take his belts off? People like you are why NASCAR fans get a bad rap.

  • Wild how he walks away from this but dies in a crash much more simpler looking than this at Daytona. It was obviously just his time.

  • The Same Year when Craven flipped over in turn 1. Wow:o

  • Another classic move by the one-eyed Irvan, kind of reminds me of the 1992 Daytona 500 when he took out almost half of the field racing for the lead.

  • Don't forget the wreck Irvan caused at Darlington in 1990 that effectively ended Neil Bonnett's career. For those of you who don't know, about half-way through the race Irvan was 10 laps down and racing leader Ken Schrader on a restart. Irvan lost it in the Infamous Turn 4 (now turn 2) and took out nearly half the field.

  • naww marlin didn't flip over...earnhardt definaltey wasent a bitch i bet you people who say he is prolly spend all your time eating and cant even fit inside of a racecar

  • Try to race even just 1 lap with what Earnhardt had injury wise, then lets see who is crying like a little bitch.

  • Lets see u break your collar-bone then two week later put a car on the pole @ Watkins Glen

  • after this wreck they added another bar to the rollcage running down the center of the windshield because dale's roof got pushed down when pressely hit him. they call it the earnhardt bar

  • Did Marlin also flip over? At 2:07 it looks like Marlin's car is upside down...

  • No, he isn't. Look again.

  • I miss the way it was back when NASCAR was on espn. I like the fox commentators, but i dont like all the stuff at the top of the screen. They should go back to that square at the top left.

  • espn now does busch series races

  • Me too, plus they would replay it at 2 or 3am so I could catch what I missed.

  • But ESPN kinda does stuff the way Fox and NBC have been doing things, so its not how it was pre-2001. But I like Jerry Punch in the booth.

  • i know the seat belt broke and i didnt mean anything by what i said.. i just meant that this one LOOKED a lot worse

  • i cant believe that he didnt die in that crash but did in the daytona 500 this one looked WAYYY worse. NASCAR lost its BEST in my opinion.. it will never be the same

  • I can't believe so many people say the same thing when there's the simple explanation that his seat belt broke at Daytona.

  • that hit was a lot like the hit that killed him

  • who raced the 3 car the next week?

  • Earnhardt started the next race, the Brickyard 400, but Mike Skinner relieved him very early on. But Dale did go the distance a week later at Watkins Glen.

  • Didnt he also win the pole at Watkins Glen. Earnhardt was as tough as nails

  • Yeah he broke the (then) track record with a broken collarbone. Unbelievable, I think its on youtube somewhere...search dale earnhardt watkins glen.

  • Look up at topow's post.

  • Yeah that trioval can be rough.

  • And that's also about the same area that Rusty Wallace had his flip in '93.

  • idont care what hubler jubler numbers and axies and angles and centrifical forces you throw, he had to be pulling more g's then at daytona, he was goin faster, in a worse part of track, strait into the wall

  • His seat belt failed at Daytona, though.

  • This is a harder impact but the angle did'nt force all the energy into the center of the car he hit the right front quarter panel. But man Sterling Marlin AGAIN! He almost killed hime twice. But man I don't blame him for his death, Earnhardt got lose at daytona and sterling didn't have .00100 seconds reaction time (thought nobody does) man still can't belive he is dead...

  • This wreck wasn't Marlin's fault, either! Irvan slid up into him, which made him slide into Earnardt.

  • The injuries were a broken collar bone, broken shoulder blade, fractured sternum and possibly a bruised heart. He actually started the race the following week, but was replaced by future teammate Mike Skinner.

  • Thank god for the development of the SAFER barrier.
