  • Ordinary People is an "extraordinary story" and i believe one on the best movies of the decade. it strikes right to the core of our humanness, and therefore remains rich throughout its plot ..right to it's end. all the main the actors on this film were all superb. esp . Timothy Hutton.. as well as Robert Reford's directing.. I never get tired of it...I can watch over and over again.

  • This film makes you realize and be grateful for what you have.

  • You don't know how right you are.

Actually, you do.... which is why I replied, lol.

  • Mary Tyler Moore's best screen performance, and the best Lead Actress performance of 1980- Moore should have won the Oscar over Sissy Spacek in "Coal Miner's Daughter". Moore did win Best Actress (Drama) from the Golden Globes though.

  • Well, MTM was of course great, but to have denied Sissy Spacek her Oscar as Loretta Lynn would have been as bad as denying Charlize Theron her Oscar as Aileen Wuornos, or Hilary Swank as Teena Brandon/Brandon Teena. Some Oscars are so obvious they cannot be denied. But having said that, Donald Sutherland was embarrassingly robbed of a nomination for this film! Not that he would have had a chance of beating DeNiro. At least they got it right with Timothy Hutton, Robert Redford, and the film.

  • My freaking therapist is a quack and wastes my time. When I tried to end my sessions with her numerous times she was on the edge of tears so I stayed because I felt guilty. I tell her the obvious and she's like, "So how does that make you feel?" Next time i'm gonna say, "How does it make you feel that I feel?"

I had to watch this movie. Conrad came off as a little prick at times. Unfortunately I can relate to this kid.

  • haha mine was the same way.

  • a mile stone,

i count this to the best movies in the entire world.

people always cherish the classics like casablanca and would count them first when talking about good movies (compared to some actual shit) but this kind of movie is a gift to humanity and real art. i love the acting, it's so brilliant, i love the decent way of adding great music, ...

fuck i love everything about it.

  • everyone in this film was great. i saw it agiain after many years. donald sutherland was wonderful in the "i don't know if i luv you anymore scene"

  • Great movie, outstanding performances from all. A must-see.

  • you knew timothy? tell me more. i like him alot

  • GREAT MOVIE SEE IT MANY TIMES.

  • Redford is SO MUCH talented as a director, too.this is his first film he directed a long before the river runs through it.

  • Realistic film. Each character has their own flaws, but the biggest ones lie with the mother who is in denial, and the father who is indecisive. The mother is also a coward because she'd rather run than confront the problem.

I've always liked this saying: lies keep you trapped, the truth sets you free.

  • OMG he's so emo!

  • Conrad is EMO because his brother Buck died, his mother blamed him because Buck was her favorite, and then he tried to kill himself. He is not a "manufactured" EMO like those dip shits you see handing out at IHOP at 3 in tyhe morning wearing white make-up and pooling their penny's to buy and share one soda.

  • and when he was at the MACDONALDS,he was with Jeannien(not for sure my spellings)is Elizabeth McGarban.or his doctors played Judd Hush,i thought.hope everythings now clear for you.↓

  • when conrad tried to talk to was karen(dinah manoff),whose his friend.theyd met while he was hospitalized.she passed away and conrad didnt knew it,just so shocked.her very last word was 【have a merry christwas!】but not sure.

  • how i wonder hes having a better family than i actually have!im truly all alone at home.Ill just ignore marytylor moor mom.shes too anoying in the movie!gosh,i love this movie though.

  • does anyone know who conrad was talking too when he was saying he tried to kill himself in the bathroom ???....I havent seen the movie but Im doing a monlouge and need to find this movie but cant find it, can anyone help me pleasseee????

  • I love the movie and book! All the characters are so realistic, like really ordinary people, you can identify with every one of them. Definitely one of my favorites! ^.^

  • la mejor pelicula... muito obrigado

  • I lost my brother two years ago, and it literally ripped our family apart. We are still trying to put the pieces back together. I have seen this movie years ago, and it touched me than, but now I cannot sit through this movie without it feeling like a punch to the heart. Loosing my brother made this movie even that much more real, more close to me, and it literally breaks me down to tears when I watch this film. This is absolutely one of the most underrated films of all time.

  • I'm sorry for your loss.

    Bless you......big hugs to you.

  • thumbs up for your comment

  • Flipping heck I had never thought about that this film was That profound! All these messages have really made me think about the world!

  • jstow01: Where did you go? Having trouble responding?

  • He's gone back into his cave. Let it lie. Those people huff and puff and pick nits and walk away as soon as the conversation (or life) gets intellectually challenging. You know, 'Nyahh, Nyaah, you're religious and I'm smart.' If jstow01 had read any history he'd know that the finest minds in western civilization - including great scientific minds - have been Christian. But he'd rather remain ignorant and arrogant in his cave of shadows.

  • ahoystella:

I agree with you. I DO UNDERSTAND that people ahve diff. viewpoints, and I agree there are plenty of unintelligent people who believe in God, but.....SO WHAT?

Not only have many of the great thinkers been Christian, but the greater point is that much scientific advancement and "cultural development" took place in Catholic Europe.

  • My "cave of shadows"? Interesting that you're plagiarizing Plato, who predates religon. In any event, you are correct; the brilliant men in Western civ HAVE been Christian, but we're talking about centuries ago, when being Christian was the rule rather than the exception. Those "great scientific minds" that you refer to had no other context than Christianity, as it was the dominant philosophy then. It no longer is now; how many brilliant scientists today are overtly Christian?

  • How on Earth did a conversation about Ordinary People turn into an argument about belief in God?

  • it took me three tries because i kept flipping to the movie when it was half over.

it was excellent. I thought it was lame when i was younger.

  • this movie made me cry... it's so sad!

  • Sad movie that shows a family wrecked from tragedy and the emptiness of secular capts. America.

  • Yes, I'm sure their secularism is what ruined them. Good call.

  • "emptiness of sec. capt. Americ." was being modified by "shows" not by "family wrecked by"

    I should've been more clear.

  • Either way, you're still a religious wacko and you're wrong. This movie has nothing at all to do with religion, secularism or anything similar. You're insane.

  • Hmmm why so bitter?

  • Because you're trying to inject your insanity into a film that has no need for it. If you like god so much, kill yourself; you'll see him much faster.

  • Wow. Harsh tone.

I love GOD, but he's not physical so I'm not going to see him...

Anyway it sounds like you have a lot of emotional pain (especially anger) and have been through a lot in your life. I'm sorry about that.

    Have a good weekend!

  • You're correct in saying you won't see him; you have a better chance of seeing Santa. You should still kill yourself, though. And maybe rewatch Ordinary People. Seems like you didn't get it the first time.

  • "You're correct in saying you won't see him; you have a better chance of seeing Santa. "

Cute line. How long did it take you to come up with that?

"You ...kill yourself...rewatch Ordinary People. Seems ... didn't get it the first time."

I love a secular person denounces religious people, calls them crazy and then tells them to "kill yourself"...how civil.

"And maybe rewatch Ordinary People. Seems like you didn't get it the first time."

I have a much better understanding than you do.

  • It's not a question of civility, it's a question of practicality and efficiency. You really love god so much? Go meet him ASAP...die! At least Islamic fundamentalists actually show some backbone and some dedication. Eat a bullet.

  • "t's not a question of civility, it's a question of practicality and efficiency.'

Wow you really are a sick dog. Maybe we should put you to sleep before you kill someone.

  • Wouldn't that be in god's hands, not yours or mine? Oh, wait....

  • No. We're actually commanded by God to take the life of someone if you know they're going to kill you...let's see where do you fit in?

  • "We"? I'm not commanded by god, or anyone else, to do anything. Just because you're delusional and/or hearing voices, don't lump the rest of us in with your illness.

  • No, I I'm not schizophrenic.

But 2 million people had that "delusion" 3,000 years ago, something which more than half the world believes which places you in the minority.

  • Who cares what happened 3000 years ago? As humans evolve and technology continues to advance, more and more of us are realizing the superiority of science and reason to religion. Sorry, pal; your cult is on the decline. Thank GOD.

  • "As humans evolve and technology continues to advance, more and more of us are realizing the superiority of science and reason to religion."

I'm not sure how they (reason and religion) conflict. Religion is not against scientific advancement.

    1. Belief in God is more rational than not believing in him. (long discussion)

    2. You've been too westernized. There is much in life beyond science and reason. African, Asian and Latin American cultures are diff. than that of European and North Americ.

  • I never said religion is against scientific advancement; religion is rendered obsolete by it. It's no coincidence that the regions you mention, in which religion thrives, are technologically and industrially lagging way behind the West and the "First World" countries. Religion is an outdated hobby.

  • And the more advanced countries are so civilized...heheheheh

Basically the First World countries choose to cut off any memory, history, and ancestral heritage and decide "we have something better". I beg to differ.

The reason why many of these First World countries (mostly Europe)deny God is because it's easier. You can maintain you're arrogance and never have to answer to a Higher Authority. It's a defense to keep the ego intact...it's understandable.

  • I think your home schooling or bible college degree has neglected to teach you the difference between "your" and "you're". Ask god to tutor you.

  • Great move to divert attention from the argument.

Bottom line: You're fully aware that where you live there is no morality. One day being gay is wrong, the next day it's fine. Having adulterous affairs is OK. Do whatever you want. No restrictions. You can basically live like an animal.

Religious people give far more charity and are much more giving.

You're far too arrogant to be subservient to Someone else.

  • Yep, being gay and having adulterous affairs IS fine. Having gay, adulterous affairs is even better! Life in the modern world is fantastic; wish you were here!

  • A fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God.' And boy, does that fool show up on the Internet ALL the time.

  • God is the ultimate goal of searching within yourself.

  • One of the saddest movies.

  • One word... WONDERFULL. I hate Beth and I love Conrad... too simple.

  • Mary Tyler Moore was absolutely riveting in this. To see someone go from their normal typecast of a funny leading lady to such a distant and cold character was a total transformation for Moore. If she had not been up against Sissy Spacek that year she would have won the Oscar.

  • whats the name of that sonong playing throughout this video?

  • The opening song is Canon in D.

The more dramatic song is one I'm not sure about, though it was redone for CHILD'S PLAY if you listen to that theme.

  • uhm NO ONE should remake this movie as ojmccaf1963 suggested, nothing could ever possibly do it justice, it would be a CRIME. The movie won best picture and director and actor for a REASON. It's amazing!!!!

  • What The Fuck,, The Trailer...

Wel if you justed checkt the trailer you don't have to see the movie anymore ;)

    Very Good Movie!

  • simply GREAT

  • how can you possibly make such good films? simply GOOD in every aspect.

  • Mary Tyler Moore deserved an oscar. She gives one of the of most incredible performances I have ever seen. So specific, powerful, subtle, passionate. The way she captures that mother's extreme detachment is fascinating. It is as though Conrad is afraid to feel, but feels too much and becomes even more frightened. Yet Beth was so wounded by Buck's death that it seems as though she simply cannot feel anymore ... and when she does, she denies it and hardens. MTM = perfect

  • AMEN, Mary Tyler Moore is absolutely phenomenal and astounding in this movie! She is incredible, you hate her so much because she becomes her character so flawlessly. She leaves you speechless!

  • It's sooo wonderful to see people remembering this film!! Whenever I hear someone say they haven't seen it, I insist they rent it immediately...they always come to me with tears in their eyes afterwards.

Probably the one, true masterpiece of the 80's.

  • I agree that this film was a masterpiece. But the only one of the 80's? I can't agree to that.

  • This is a wonderful movie and I love the trailer, too!

  • the book is very nice too , i never saw the movie though

  • This is probably the one movie that does the book justice...Grant it...books are always better. It's sooo amazing. You have to love 80's movies...This one most of all.

  • "Can't you see anything accept in terms of how it affects you?"

    "No, neither can you."

    An amazing scene.

  • "And then you come to me and tell me how to be happy"

Yes, extra-ordinary. One of the best dramatic films of the 20th century.

  • I remember sitting in the movie theatre watching this when it came out. At the end, people just sat ... stunned, and you could hear people crying all over the theatre. Never have seen men cry in a theatre before...but I tell you, this movie affected people like I have never seen since. It's disappointing so many people have never even heard of this movie.

  • What is disappointing is that it is no longer 1980 and we have the crappy movies we have today; that's what's disappointing!

  • This movie is gut wrenching. So real and honest.

  • Quite possibly the greatest movie ever made. Incredible acting with a story that speaks to all of us. MTM is simply magnificent. Towards the end there is a scene in which she is packing to leave. In her face you can see so much, and she begins to cry. Then, you can see her harden, regain her composure, and move on. Simply incredible.

  • Ordinary People was filmed on location in Lake Forest, IL, A very expensive, ritzy, upper class suburb 30 miles north of Chicago.

  • man. i can't find this movie anywhere. :(

  • you can buy it on Amazon for like $4.00

  • What a fucking masterpiece. Gives me goosebumps. Redford hit a grand slam homerun with this movie. So did Mary Tyler Moore with her acting.

  • I could not agree more with you lineba20. Has anybody ever made a better movie on their debut than Robert Redford?. I doubt it, & MTM clearly deserved an oscar for her performance.

  • remimds me of something right out of Family Law 101
