it has everything to do with it, fluidity of movement is what made them competitive games and thats the piece it took from quake! what you call "heavy modification" are just animations and textures and shit, essentially when youre playing counterstrike and you press W to go forward, youre using the original quake engine to change the game

counterstrike is a patched up quake with its own models weapons and rules

Just because something copied CS (assuming that premise is true) does mean it is easier or takes less practice than CS. For all we know, they could copy CS and make it more complicated and harder. @BigPWilly123 the gameplay is a phenomena - the map maker uses a square grid (and cubes) but the player can turn in 360* so when the engine interprets player input onto the map it works very hard. the result is a very potentially comfortable control experience and in turn extreme depth of skill. parameters of the game like movement speed can be manipulated with skill and a hairs distance can make the difference between a win/loss and that win can be just a pickup game or a teams prize money
