You guys should thank U2 and Green Day. They made the song terrible so everyone would appreciate the original more. Someone thinks it's clever. Only one problem with this plan. It worked.
This is the original and best version the Saints are coming. Brilliant album and one of my favourites of all time. This band should have been given more attention because they were truly one of the best punk bands in the late seventies. I am fortunate to have this on vinyl and consider this a piece of fine music of the punk genre.
Covering this is like trying to draw De Vinci dont even attempt it no matter the cause, and how fucking annoying for all of us their at time that grew up with Skids and Big Country to have them not even get credit typical USA mentality change history for youre purpose..Skids song end of, and not to give them credit in first place is a Liberty. ..
I understand what you're getting at. But the flag was put there as part of my effort to show the song's origins, as there was a common misconception that it was originally a U2/Green Day song. Unlike other idiots I have no objection to them covering the song, especially as it was a charity effort to help New Orleans. Also I can't change the flag without changing the clip and so would "lose" over 200,000 views. And I enjoyed your last statement !
A cover is just that a cover..Class five star Scottish energy, passion and aggression in equal amounts from bods that grew up in state schools and schemes....Amazing band.
Calm down, Green Day and U2 didn't write nor steal the song, The Skids originated it and U2 and Green Day covered it, it is actually a complement to The Skids saying their music is brilliant.
U2's guitarist "The Edge" has always been an admirer and influenced by the Skid's guitarist the late Stuart Adamson; who when the Skids broke up went on to form "Big Country".
@2everibodyfeaturinme there is a house in new orleans. they called the rsing sun bit? that wasnt written by green day :L it's from a song called, wouldnt you guess "house of the rising sun." Muse did a covr of it, I cant remember the original.

Oi!!! both versions are fuckin horse shit! thats why there good ya fuckers, now shut up and enjoy the music thats why we clicked on the video in the first goddamn place
And where did you happen to come across this totally false piece of information ? Richard Jobson and Stuart Adamson of the "Skids" wrote this song in 1978. Look up Wikipedia or somewhere if you don't believe me.

You also dont need to fucking comment "But fucking so and so did a better version" it's fucking annoying and then you fucking sit there and fucking argue over it. No, I enjoyed that ! There's nothing like a good swear sometimes. As I've said, I only "censor" comments if it is personal abuse aimed at someone in particular. They can abuse their opinion, but not the individual.

@DelStrainComedy being an original doesn't make it any better as a song, so long as people respect that a cover IS just a cover, then it's fine to like it better.
I could have phrased that better ! But I seem to remember the comment I was reacting to had really annoyed me. But at least it was about the music.

@roddy76to86 I can completely understand your reaction... you like a song, uploaded it to youtube and someone dislikes it! My way of thinking is that greenday and U2 could't produce theire cover without The Skids, and I always enjoyed listening to new modern songs and their older original!
Ok, "stealing" is a word over the top. It looks like I must have been fed up with the previous comment which I can't be bothered looking for. The Green Day/U2 song is a "cover version". And as you say, it was in aid of charity.
@roddy76to86 They recorded their cover in September, 2006 with the proceeds to go to the Hurricane Katrina effort. It was available online for sale, but it didn't really get many downloads. In fact, that was true even after the Super Bowl performance.
I think that Bono's & Billy Joe's hearts were in the right place - but it didn't really pan out. Hopefully, the discography of The Skids got some action because of it.
As you can see from my description I uploaded this song with the big Scottish flag to counter the common misconception that the U2/Green Day version was original. @canadagreenday well to me this noise is what i love and green day haved good version too but well they would do better if they did this song and house of the rising sun apart not mix it
@canadagreenday I knew someone like you that suffered from lack of taste when it came to music. One weekend with The skids, R E M, monks, The konks, The clash and many others made him realize that unlike many bands Like U2 their songs are unique and have meaning. Maybe next time dont try and disrespect a band on their own video. Either keep it to your self or say it to a group that would agree. like on the U2 version. -_- unnecessary rudeness is not needed.
Both versions are awesome. Live or studio, the song is powerful. I do like the contrast between them and the guitar work in the live version only adds more texture and a welcome variation to the song. Thanks for chatting and more would always be welcome....
I mainly prefer the quite recently released live version simply because I've been listening to the original version for 33 years ! Sadly to the best of my knowledge there are no other versions by the Skids of The Saints Are Coming. But if you look at my channel page, YouTube now have a handy "search" facility (for uploads and favourites), so if you simply type in "Skids", a handful of my other Skids uploads should appear, both live and recorded.
Brings the movies back to me. Awesome song, and I mostly hate cover versions as they tend to be cash motivated and not about a quality take on a song. Thanks for this music post!!!
@roddy76to86 Have never heard the covers of this and don't need to ever. Awesome song and damn glad to hear the first and only version that needs heard. Thanks roddy!!
My pleasure. You might want to listen to the Skids playing this song live in 1980 that I've put in the "video responses". It's more raw, but the late, great Stuart Adamson plays some neat variations, bored presumably playing it the same way every time.
My favourite version is the live one by the Skids that I've put in the video response section. RAW ! And Stuart Adamson is fed up playing it the same way for 3 years, and adds some great guitar variations.
But I get tired of "which is better ?" Beauty is in the ear of the beholder.
@elmexicanochilango ok too bad greenday had to group up with u2 and their version still sucks campared to the original version lets look at the diffrence in years back when this band was around they were just starting to accept rock so yeah older bands help pave the way for these bands
@TV1Totoya you're right. greenday only covered the song to make a lot of money but the spirit of this song isn't in the green day version, it's nothing in comparison with the the skids version, which is great!
I agree about the music. But I thought the U2/Green Day version was done for charity, after Hurricane Katrina devestated New Orleans. And the name of the New Orleans American football team is "The Saints".
@chiaroos You do list your occupation as "teenager" (which made me laugh; I have a 15 year old son with Standard Grades looming), so they were rather before your time. All the same it is surprising you haven't heard of them. You can't have met an "oldie" like me who wallows in the nostalgia of the great music of that time. There are a few more "Skids" songs in my uploads if you're interested. One sad fact is their brilliant guitarist Stuart Adamson died in 2001.
Well now people will finally be able to see who REALLY wrote this song. I like Green Day and U2's version better, but this is the original (which most people don't know) and it's pretty good.
That was my main reason for uploading this (with the big Scottish flag !), just so people would know where the song originated from. As for which is best, well that's a matter of personal taste.
My favourite version is the live one by the Skids I've put in as a video response. Really raw, and the great, late Stuart Adamson messes about with the guitar work brilliantly, as he's obviously bored out his skull playing it the same way each time for the previous 3 years.
@johnnybagful Well good for you. That's your opinion. I, personally, PREFER the Green Day and U2 version to this, although this one is still good, and you'll never convince me to think otherwise.
@johnnybagful Unfortunately too many people do like the same things...all that rap and pop shit like *insert shitty pop artist here* and *insert shitty rap artist here* (there are just so many to pick from). It's sad the kind of shit people call music nowadays. But hey that's my opinion and some of them have theirs.
I'm quite ashamed of myself right now. Somehow, after 18 years of existence, this song and band has completely passed me by. Thanks for rectifying my mistake, cheers.
Bullshit about the record companies being in charge now. We have this much shitty pop music in the charts right now not because of the record companies but because of the fucked up taste in music today's majority has.
amen to that. when the old white guys were in charge they still let music like this out. but once everything opened up everything went downhill.
same thing with the fucking movies today. back when the old white guys controlled the studios they had to take risks to stay afloat so they made classics.
now todays movies cater completely to what people want and look what we get?
Your talking nonsense. The hippies, prog. rockers, and executives of the big record companies (the old white guys) in the UK tried everything in their power to suppress punk. The BBC's "Old Grey Whistle Test" played it's first punk song two years late in 1978: junior staff revolt ! The Sex Pistol's "God Save The Queen" was No.1 in 1977, but only got to No.2 as the BBC manipilated the sales figures (this is now admitted), and the NME bottled out completely and had no No.1 !
i'm glad you posted this! i thought it was done for the movie but it's still equally appropriate for the movie. plus uk 70s punk is still the best punk...ever!
The best version is the live performance I put as a video response. Obviously too "raw" for many people, but I think it's great, and the late Stuart Adamson's guitar work is brilliant. Go on, give it a try !
@fearfulcrawdog hey bro us ameicans can be oricks to just saying and ima correct your self for you you ment the someone out of the us and ireland arnt trying to be a prick your welcome peace out
Er, yes ! For charity for New Orleans (whose baseball team are called "The Saints") after Hurricane Katriana. If you look back through the comments you'll see rather a big fuss about which version was is best !
My motivation for uploading the song with a big Scottish flag and a description was to ensure that people would know the song's origins, as many Americans (and others) were under the misapprehension that it was an original U2/Green Day song.
Apologies if I gave that impression, but I did say MANY Americans. I also know that from personal experience, as I lived in America for six months (and went to school there) when I was 12 years old in 1976.
And I got home just in time for the UK punk "explosion". That was a relief !
@roddy76to86 Yeah I'm 15. That's a little bit before my time but I wish I could have been there; and honestly I agree with you there the general population of the US embarrasses me.
yeah i'm just gonna go ahead and say because of the fight that i am from the US and i am a big U2 and greenday fan but there is no fucking way you can say that their version is better remakes 90% of the time are complete shit and if you can say that the skids suck i hope the next time you go to a gay Justin Bieber concert that YOU get hit with the water bottle and Justin can finally get hit by Pubertiy
@roddy76to86 he's a musical fad like the Jonas brothers he's one of the people who little girls go crazy over and block real musicians like breaking benjamin the skids that kind of music it makes me sick knowing real music is almost never noticed anymore he's just a kid that got lucky and thinks he's awesome now it really is sad but i'm glad its just a US thing i guess thankfully other nations aren't on this band wagon
Ok stfu there both badass btw is this the only rock vid on utube where people dont fight about justin bieber

My pleasure. You might want to listen to the Skids playing this song live in 1980 that I've put in the "video responses". It's more raw, but the late, great Stuart Adamson plays some neat variations, bored presumably playing it the same way every time.
roddy76to86 8 months ago
Fuck Green Day...The original is the bulls bollocks!
xgoldlion07x 8 months ago
hey man fuck green day ! this is the original and always will be ! obviously green day agrees too because they covered this song!

roddy76to86 9 months ago 3
@roddy76to86 yes it is. are u a skids fan? u2 and green day's versions better
elmexicanochilango 9 months ago
@elmexicanochilango
My favourite version is the live one by the Skids that I've put in the video response section. RAW ! And Stuart Adamson is fed up playing it the same way for 3 years, and adds some great guitar variations.
But I get tired of "which is better ?" Beauty is in the ear of the beholder.
roddy76to86 9 months ago 3
@elmexicanochilango You are taking the piss.. The original is the best...

@elmexicanochilango green day = no musical talent

@jimi025 are you serious Green day have more awards and are more known around the world they do have talent all the songs are good
elmexicanochilango 8 months ago
@elmexicanochilango ok too bad greenday had to group up with u2 and their version still sucks campared to the original version lets look at the diffrence in years back when this band was around they were just starting to accept rock so yeah older bands help pave the way for these bands

I hate you Green day. You destroy The Skids spirit.

@TV1Totoya
But they've certainly helped this upload's viewing figures !
roddy76to86 9 months ago 2
@TV1Totoya you're right. greenday only covered the song to make a lot of money but the spirit of this song isn't in the green day version, it's nothing in comparison with the the skids version, which is great!
Bieroern 9 months ago
@Bieroern
I agree about the music. But I thought the U2/Green Day version was done for charity, after Hurricane Katrina devestated New Orleans. And the name of the New Orleans American football team is "The Saints".

@muhajong
I sometimes wonder if I've uploaded a song or a film clip !

how is it i live in Dunfermline and NEVER heard of there guys, Awesome!
chiaroos 9 months ago
@chiaroos You do list your occupation as "teenager" (which made me laugh; I have a 15 year old son with Standard Grades looming), so they were rather before your time. All the same it is surprising you haven't heard of them. You can't have met an "oldie" like me who wallows in the nostalgia of the great music of that time. There are a few more "Skids" songs in my uploads if you're interested. One sad fact is their brilliant guitarist Stuart Adamson died in 2001.
roddy76to86 9 months ago
Well now people will finally be able to see who REALLY wrote this song. I like Green Day and U2's version better, but this is the original (which most people don't know) and it's pretty good.
MrKyel17 9 months ago
@MrKyel17
That was my main reason for uploading this (with the big Scottish flag !), just so people would know where the song originated from. As for which is best, well that's a matter of personal taste.
My favourite version is the live one by the Skids I've put in as a video response. Really raw, and the great, late Stuart Adamson messes about with the guitar work brilliantly, as he's obviously bored out his skull playing it the same way each time for the previous 3 years.
roddy76to86 9 months ago
@MrKyel17 i bought this on 12"red vinyl back in the day and its well better than u2/green day
johnnybagful 9 months ago
@johnnybagful Well good for you. That's your opinion. I, personally, PREFER the Green Day and U2 version to this, although this one is still good, and you'll never convince me to think otherwise.
MrKyel17 9 months ago
@MrKyel17 right on mate,i like the u2/green day version aswell,it would be a boring old world if everyone liked the same stuff,wouldnt it
johnnybagful 9 months ago
@johnnybagful Unfortunately too many people do like the same things...all that rap and pop shit like *insert shitty pop artist here* and *insert shitty rap artist here* (there are just so many to pick from). It's sad the kind of shit people call music nowadays. But hey that's my opinion and some of them have theirs.
MrKyel17 9 months ago 2

Have you still got that 12" ? It's probably a collector's item by now.

Bullshit about the record companies being in charge now. We have this much shitty pop music in the charts right now not because of the record companies but because of the fucked up taste in music today's majority has.
ArowanaW 10 months ago 5
@ArowanaW
amen to that. when the old white guys were in charge they still let music like this out. but once everything opened up everything went downhill.
same thing with the fucking movies today. back when the old white guys controlled the studios they had to take risks to stay afloat so they made classics.
now todays movies cater completely to what people want and look what we get?
mattressjedi 9 months ago
@mattressjedi
Your talking nonsense. The hippies, prog. rockers, and executives of the big record companies (the old white guys) in the UK tried everything in their power to suppress punk. The BBC's "Old Grey Whistle Test" played it's first punk song two years late in 1978: junior staff revolt ! The Sex Pistol's "God Save The Queen" was No.1 in 1977, but only got to No.2 as the BBC manipilated the sales figures (this is now admitted), and the NME bottled out completely and had no No.1 !
roddy76to86 9 months ago
i'm glad you posted this! i thought it was done for the movie but it's still equally appropriate for the movie. plus uk 70s punk is still the best punk...ever!

the green day/u2's version is better
MrSocks92 11 months ago
@MrSocks92
The best version is the live performance I put as a video response. Obviously too "raw" for many people, but I think it's great, and the late Stuart Adamson's guitar work is brilliant. Go on, give it a try !
roddy76to86 11 months ago 4
@MrSocks92 frankly I find U2/green day's version much more meaningful ... but this one haves a great charm too mate

greenday and u2 did a version?
soilwork88 11 months ago
@soilwork88
Er, yes ! For charity for New Orleans (whose baseball team are called "The Saints") after Hurricane Katriana. If you look back through the comments you'll see rather a big fuss about which version was is best !
My motivation for uploading the song with a big Scottish flag and a description was to ensure that people would know the song's origins, as many Americans (and others) were under the misapprehension that it was an original U2/Green Day song.
roddy76to86 11 months ago
@roddy76to86 Well I'm American and I knew of this version first. Just know that we're not ALL fat and stupid. (Americans)
Foreman1695 11 months ago
@Foreman1695
Apologies if I gave that impression, but I did say MANY Americans. I also know that from personal experience, as I lived in America for six months (and went to school there) when I was 12 years old in 1976.
And I got home just in time for the UK punk "explosion". That was a relief !
roddy76to86 11 months ago
@roddy76to86 Yeah I'm 15. That's a little bit before my time but I wish I could have been there; and honestly I agree with you there the general population of the US embarrasses me.
Foreman1695 11 months ago
@Foreman1695
that just a myth. Most third world countries' people and many europeans has the same range of knowledge, even worse
the only thing that makes us worse is that we are too reliant upon our government and has lost that independence edge
and its like REALLY embarssing that sarah palin is extremely stupid :DDDDD

yeah i'm just gonna go ahead and say because of the fight that i am from the US and i am a big U2 and greenday fan but there is no fucking way you can say that their version is better remakes 90% of the time are complete shit and if you can say that the skids suck i hope the next time you go to a gay Justin Bieber concert that YOU get hit with the water bottle and Justin can finally get hit by Pubertiy
Fearfulcrawdog 1 year ago 2
@Fearfulcrawdog
Who the hell is Justin Bieber ?
roddy76to86 1 year ago 2
@roddy76to86 he's a musical fad like the Jonas brothers he's one of the people who little girls go crazy over and block real musicians like breaking benjamin the skids that kind of music it makes me sick knowing real music is almost never noticed anymore he's just a kid that got lucky and thinks he's awesome now it really is sad but i'm glad its just a US thing i guess thankfully other nations aren't on this band wagon
