I grew up with him. I was his neighbor for 5-6 years, and I went to school with him as well (he was a senior in high school when I was a freshman). And I always knew him as a mentally unbalanced bully. He used to hit people, threaten them, call them unspeakable words, etc. We grew up in a fairly liberal city and he was always attacking the beliefs of many. However, his "outing", to me, was a good thing, as maybe his repression of his own sexuality was the cause for his extreme behavior.
To the narrow people that compare this man to African-Americans or Jews-- When was an African American or Jew ever raised to believe that they were not what they were? Taken to churches or synagogues every week to be told that person they are is less than others. While the plight of these people is tremendous, it does not compare. They are apples and oranges.
Amen, and thank you. I have had the pleasure of working with Tyler before on conservative projects and I can say that he is an amazing, principled conservative. Who really cares what his orientation is? Live and let live.
Notice that in any other community these people would not get a pass. If a young Black man was discovered to be a webmaster for David Duke, would African-Americans embrace him? What about an 18-year-old tender young Jewish boy campaigning for and volunteering as a personal assistant to Louis Farrakhan? Would he be protected by other Jews?
I ONLY believe in OUTING when a Gay person works with ANTI-Gay sources....sorry, it's now become a DOG eat DOG world....and if it was up to the heteros, we'd be extinct..or executed. ..at 46yr old..Im effing sick of this BS..religious right crap.....at 18yr old..he's old enought to fight in war.....While I generally agree with you..The last 6yrs have shown what the GOP thinks of US....I say SHOW NO MERCY!
People are misunderstanding this story. Tyler Whitney is very much accepted within his Republican circle. Tancredo couldn't be happier. Don't you realize that Mary Cheney's parents fully embraced her when she came out at 17? And she went on to campaign for Bush/Cheney and call others "sons-of-bitches" for even mentioning that she is a lesbian.
The Cheney family was denounced by the likes of Rush Limbaugh. The theocracy wing of the Republican party doesn't currently accept the gay lifestyle as valid. Ever hear of the definition of marriage amendments being passed in many states? It's meant to discriminate against the gay community. I don't see what's so surprising about self-hating people who work to destroy their own rights and identity.
To be fussy for a moment, the "gay lifestyle" is a misnomer. Being gay is a caused by genetics, as far as the latest science is concerned, so there is not really a "lifestyle choice" involved. The assumptions behind that phrase create an automatic obstacle to acceptance whenever it is used.
I don't think you understand that there are many gay Republicans like Tyler who are proud to work for men like Tancredo. They will tell you in private that the "gay militant agenda" sickens them and they want to stop those who seek "special rights". I have talked to gay Republcians who insist that homosexuality is a horrible example to set for kids and that's why they fight against gay marriage.
What you call the gay militant agenda (Hannity talking points) is also called civil rights. Your party isn't big on the idea. That's why the GOP is mainly composed of just White people. Gays, latinos, blacks, asians, native-americans aren't really welcomed by your party. Most people under 35 understand this. Being gay is like being right-handed to a younger generation.
Most likely Tyler will never speak about it to the press. That has been the case of most gay Republicans who have worked for politicians all the way from Trent Lott, Jessie Helms, Bob Dornan, and so many others. Find the most extremely homophobic politician and I guarantee there will be a gay boy working directly under him.
Why do people keep calling this an 'outing'? Hello? Tyler already came out to his friends and family almost two months ago. The only reason it is coming up now is because his Republican friend Sylvester posted about it on his Conservative blog.
I'm not speaking for "us"... I'm giving my opinion, just like all the individuals who have already spoken on the issue. Moderate Dem= Tempered approaches.
i think you need to relax ......and maybe stop speaking for us.....mod-dem....look that one up .....anti woman, anti immigration, anti civil liberites, anti gay .....are you an uncle tom ..matt

How about the Mainstream GLBT Treatment of Gay Republicans? I think they're probably treated worse by other gays than straight people.
