It does seem like the guy driving the XR was only using about half throttle and he even went slower each time. Both good bikes but the XR driver didn't seem to ride it right.
It would appear that the person riding the XR650 is not very skilled in the sand yet.
My advice is to learn how to double clutch, choose a gear that keep the back tire spinning. Never let the engine lug. And for Gods Sake let the air out of your rear tire. Your making us good XR650 riders look bad!
Several reasons I would guess; The DRZ had a much better/faster run at the hill, Rider skills, the XR is quite a bit heavier and the torque of the XR is actually working against it going up a dune. A light Motocross bike would shred the DRZ up that dune. That would be my guess'es anyway...
@BikeMeAustin Fairly good guess mate, and the other thing that didnt help was his rear tyre was badly worn and he had bugger all traction.He normally would have sailed up there no problems.

Use the Perelli MT21 tire, a REAL ON/OFF ROAD TIRE, Its 10% street legal. I use it becuase its rated for 100 plus MPH as ive had other tires that claim to be off road come apart on me at high speeds,

Yeah TOO much power for crappy tires. If it doesn't have a larger tire with the right tread to compensate for the extra weight/power ofcourse it will dig a trench. I ride a cr500 and have lost to many a 450 riders but only where my traction is limited. On the tarmac and hard packed surfaces They will keep up until I hit 3rd gear and then i'm gone. An uncorked and well tuned xr650 will hang with my 500 on the street no worries
@bandguy360 U R Incorrect- Had a POS KLR650, then XR650L then DRZ400s (intake cam, 3x3 airbox mod & thin base gasket + full Yosh exhaust). DRZ kicked both their ass as an all around dual sport. Big bikes obviousley could pound 65MPH & Honda did have nice plush suspension but power wise DRZ run circles around both. Was even too lazy to get a dirt bike to take to Colorado, so took DRZ & made a couple 11,000' climbs with KTM buddies all off-road. DRZ is best under $2,500 'working mans' bike IMHO!

My XR600R that I have now doesn't have as much power as an XR650, but if you listen to that video, it sounds like he never rev's it up. The XR's are known for their low-end torque, but when properly tuned, they rev out well too. Looks like something I would have hit in about 3rd gear and roosted right over.

Ok all you Youtube know-alls There is no good or bad in this clip The XR was mine and The DRZ destructuses we have riden thousands of kms together and we always have fun. The pure grunt of the XR was always fun to have but when you drop it or stall it in the boggy dunes i start wishin for that electric leg on the DRZ. wow, bunch of ignants on this site, horsepower doesn't matter. yes the rear wheel may be bad, but also look the XR650 is a freaking tank, its heavy and all that torque can be its downfall as well.
It may be a 650 but its the XR650L which means it dosent have the Honda factory Hop-Up Kit, THIS 650 in the video prob has about 45-47 hp. The Hop-Up Kit is what gave the 650 the 60hp every knows about, the difference is astronomical when comparing the bikes. Keep that thing on the street where it belongs, the XR650R would tear the face off that hill.
If you look closely you will see this bike has radiators which means its a 650R not a 650L and it doesn't matter if it had 40 hp or 100hp when the back tyre is spinning so bad because it has no knobs on it.Wheel spin = loss of forward momentum which ultimately will stop you.The DRZ400 which had a good tyre and only has about 40 hp flew up the hill because it wasnt spinning the shit out the tyre
Hey super it was my bike dude it was a 99 XR650r she had a near bald knobby on but shit it was fun trying to get that tank up the hill even falling off. I did tear that hill apart on more than one ocasion. The hill is infact very steep for the last 80 meters and the vid just dont seem to do it justice. I can see why people say rider error but thats cool too - to each there own . I had a ball with Destructus that day and still do when we ride and he got his revenge on me with this clip :) PEACE

The DRZ400 is not the winner, the rider of the 400 is the winner. The 650 rider sucks ass. The bike IS unbeatable if the rider isn't an amateur trying to climb a sand hill in 1st gear.
On viewing the footage it is blatantly obvious that the XR is acumbersome unweildy peice of antiquated ag equipment. it struggles pathetically to ungracefully and very unsuccessfully climb a dune that the DRZ makes look effortless and elegant at the same time. No wonder the Xr range is being scrapped with such lack lustre performances as that!!! I've seen that very same XR with a decent tyre fitted rip up that dune in 2nd-3rd gear no probs (type 'XR650 Honda Sand dune hillclimb' to see it).

wow, bunch of ignants on this site, horsepower doesn't matter. yes the rear wheel may be bad, but also look the XR650 is a freaking tank, its heavy and all that torque can be its downfall as well.

It may be a 650 but its the XR650L which means it dosent have the Honda factory Hop-Up Kit, THIS 650 in the video prob has about 45-47 hp. The Hop-Up Kit is what gave the 650 the 60hp every knows about, the difference is astronomical when comparing the bikes. Keep that thing on the street where it belongs, the XR650R would tear the face off that hill.

If you look closely you will see this bike has radiators which means its a 650R not a 650L and it doesn't matter if it had 40 hp or 100hp when the back tyre is spinning so bad because it has no knobs on it.Wheel spin = loss of forward momentum which ultimately will stop you.The DRZ400 which had a good tyre and only has about 40 hp flew up the hill because it wasnt spinning the shit out the tyre

Hey super it was my bike dude it was a 99 XR650r she had a near bald knobby on but shit it was fun trying to get that tank up the hill even falling off. I did tear that hill apart on more than one ocasion. The hill is infact very steep for the last 80 meters and the vid just dont seem to do it justice. I can see why people say rider error but thats cool too - to each there own . I had a ball with Destructus that day and still do when we ride and he got his revenge on me with this clip :) PEACE

I did the same thing.......While learning to ride the BRP (Big Red Pig) Now I am halfway decent at climbing have yet to stall or not make it And I ride some almost vertical sand dunes Lost control once and she jumped out from under me lol thats about it! But this video is like me taking my 7 yr old putting him in front of a hill and telling him to hold the gas Dont worry about downshifting son you can make it!

Well oldbinasslick finally someone has seen the light and converted to the truth, guessing your "crib" area, a drz400 would be a hoot for a drive bye or just to meet with your homeys . Button start has been standard here for over 20 years which puts the xr650 in the vintage machinery era so it could hold some point of interest as a laugh , which reminds me of a cut down xr used as a pigs hide hair removal which a course 8 inch circular belt being the main addition.

On viewing the footage it is blatantly obvious that the XR is acumbersome unweildy peice of antiquated ag equipment. it struggles pathetically to ungracefully and very unsuccessfully climb a dune that the DRZ makes look effortless and elegant at the same time. No wonder the Xr range is being scrapped with such lack lustre performances as that!!! Oh and they are such a fugly looking thing to boot, to think I was considering purchasing such a rotund bohemeth over the mighty DRZ!!!!!
