It's great that you have noted NOT to eat the White Croaker caught off this pier! However, it's important to know that white croaker isnot the only fish contaminated off the Southern California coast. The other Do Not Consume fish are: Barracuda, Black Croaoker, Barred Sand Bass and Topsmelt To learn how to protect your health and about fish contamination check out pvsfish.org
catch these with a sabiki rig. Use a bit off mackerel or any baitfish to catch them easier. Cast out a little past the fish and reel in slowly. I have gotten 3 mac's on one cast. Tons of fun on a nice summer day
@AzianPurzwation - It appears he is using a medium action rod. When I used to go to the pier I used an Ugly Stick rated 6-12 pounds (light) and 8 lb test mono. It works for the smaller mackerel. On the boats I would go as light as I could without having everyone else get upset: 8-15 lbs medium action Ugly Stick and 10 or 12 pound test line. Worked well with Calico's. If Barracuda were around I would use a 20-30 pound test mono leader, small swivel, and 15 lb test line with 10-17 Ugly Stick.
Try Hermosa Beach Pier or Manhattan Beach Pier for halibut. Oceanside Pier is even better about an hour and a half south (off 5 South just north of San Diego), remember to catch and use live bait. Good luck.
Fishing 5am in the morning is good all year long. Fishing at 5pm is okay during the summer. Use some fresh cut bait or buy inexpensive shrimp, clams, etc. from fish market the day before you go.

@MegaEggyman - use cut squid or shrimp. buy at Seafood City before you go, it is much cheaper in grocery store than on pier.
