The Western Orthodox church saw this as an opportunity to reunite with the Eastern Orthodox from the Great Schism of 1054, so the Pope sent in the Crusaders to beat back the Muslims. Once the fighting had ended, the Eastern Orthodox told the Pope that they never asked for their help and refuse to reunite with the Western Orthodox.

Whats interesting is that for the Western Orthodox it was the religious motive, for the Byzantine army it was political, for the Muslims it was both political and religious (since Islam is the only system that must be both political and religious), and for the Eastern Orthodox it was neither. Just wanted to detail the record deeper. hahaha

Secondary, the info from a couple University students that are majoring in world history and are on the path to become history instructors. Third, info from the net and random sources. It's interesting how Western Orthodox became America's Christianity, hated among non-believers and protected. Contrast that..

@Lopikus8 Um.....I stand to HEAVILY correct you in that I for one I've discussed this with a history teacher and several college students that are getting ready to obtain their master degree in world history and all of them confirm that there is a "Western Orthodox." The Eastern Greek Orthodox has a flowchart/diagram of a time line that explicitly shows the Western Orthodox that was created in 1054. You should research more and state facts here and not just your opinion. :)

I actually have a diagram/flowchart that an Eastern Greek Orthodox bishop gave to me that charts out the history of the EO and WO, the Great Schism and how the WO maintains that it was the EO that rebelled and not the other way around. I bring all this up because it is all new to me and I've spent the last 30 years listening to the secularists/atheists beat their war drum against Christians and I had to agree with them. Now there are distinctions to be made.

@macasmunchys You may be seeking a "secular" source to confirm. Wiki gives just a pinch of it on their Crusades page in the "After the First Crusade" section. In Eastern Orthodox the subject wasn't so light as it is with "secularists." To the EO it was huge because the Pope told the EO that their rebellion would be forgiven if they reunited with the Western Orthodox but it was the WO that split away from the EO. EO is the first undivided church started by Jesus's brother James.

At the time the christians took power of the Roman Empire socierty itself was already vastly converted.
