in a deisel and hybrid comparison, fuel economy and performance plus drivability should be factors. if the bimmer had the most power, most fun to drive, and one of the best suvs they have ever driven, then y is it 4th.
Yeah right, that crappy Lexus is better than the BMW? My brother has the 2010 RX350 and it's a piece of shit compared to all the others here. I drive an LX470 and I see Lexus's newer models are not as good. The RX is slow and very BORING to drive. So if you have come to the point in your life where you don't aspire for anything interesting, RX it is!
This is a load of crap. The complaints he had for the X5 had only to do with the way it was equipped. Here's some advice, don't get the sports package w/ 19" wheels if you're going offroading in the North Pole. Plus, it does have a backup camera available. As far as the idrive goes, fine, but 4th place? It significantly outperforms every other car in the comparison and still manages to be more fuel efficient than the other diesels. Plus the eco-credit drops $4.5K. C'mon guys.
I'd take the BMW and the Mercedes-Benz diesels for the functional interior. I think the BMW is better looking than that of the Mercedes-Benz. I also like the fuel economy of the two diesels. I'd love to see the Lexus and the VW go head to head.
It doesn't cost $65K today with the 4500 bmw eco credit and a $1800 fed tax credit. I'm driving one off the lot with sport pkg, leather, 20" wheels, etc for under $50K. And if you can't back up an SUV, you might need driving lessons.

Look, man. If you're going to talk about the cars, then talk about the cars. I also feel like they largely wrote off the BMW despite its obvious superiority in diesel fuel economy, torque, and road-driving experience. But if you're going to be a spineless inarticulate racist instigator then --pardon my french-- but you can go fuck yourself. You disgust me.

theres a video of a cummins starting in cold weather w/ 1.3 million on it. I know this isnt a cummins, but BMWs have really good longevity. could this last as long? and diesels are almost always more reliable. if you do the maintenance.
Thank U Thank U for bringing these diesels... keep them coming and we Americans have to start welcoming and loving them, just like what the Europeans do.. I hope these diesels can sell more here in the US so they can initiate the increeeedibly fuel-efficient diesel sales here. Cheers!
When they say the x5 is "not capable" they just spend half the video saying it was the best SUV on the road so they must be referring to off road or are they contradicting themselves?and WTF why he is going on about a lack of tech i mean there different spec in different countries but in Australia it has a back up camera, navagation+idrive,TV function and voice control, memory for seats, mirrors and steering wheel, parking function for mirrors, front+rear sensors, bmw professional radio, bixenons ect
Weird, you say the x5 came in last due to the lack of technology like navigation, but you show the iDrive system with navigation in the video and you even select it on camera. It's in a technology optional package, but they definitely offer it.
I have the 335D here in Europe. Power figures here are 286hp and 580NM. What's wrong with the diesel in US? Or is there some other reasons for that gap between EU and US in this matter?
personally i like gasoline engines but diesel engines are good too, especially the 250 CDI from mercedes. 200 hp, 500 nm, does 45 mpg (54 in british mpg).
the touareg is the worst SUV ever in the "consumer reports" and i believe it: my dad sold his Touareg 2.5TDi cuz the engines and the electric problems was unsustainable and he was totally desperate, lol
And it's ironic that BMW and Mercedes are being criticized left and right for not being high-tech enough, because very few years ago Benz and BMW were getting criticized for being too overly complex and sophisticated with their COMMAND and i-drive units. Now theyre not high-tech enough?? These stupid editors are just too damn hard to satisfy.
Maybe it's the offerings. Take the Lexus for example, the remote touch is Lexus' first proprietary, but it comes with a longer list of advanced features- standard. While you get iDrive or COMMAND also standard, you don't quite get the same amount of advanced features. iDrive is still confusing to me, but it's getting there.
The fact that the improvement of the engine is important is why BMW got 47 International of the Year Awards, the most out of any brand, and why BMW is behind Lexus and Mercedes in technology, yet more comfortable, ergonomic, more performing, and somewhat more fuel efficient than the Lexus. About being "high-tech", those editors are just spoiled; no wonder the US is in a recession and so much in debt.
I dont think bmw is behind lexus in technology anyway ... this is motortrend and all american review are biaised ... i think they like toyota and american cars way too much
@4MATICbenz Just looking at the German cars before Lexus emerged, we can tell that MB and BMW (also, Audi and VW) are kind of RELUCTANT to implement these electronics (causing its reliability to go down), and would WANT to depend on structural mechanics. This consumer desire to have the latest gagetry is just getting so CRAZY!!
@unknownunknowns , im not sure if i can agree about the part where you mentioned the Euros are reluctant to implement new electronic goodies. Back in the early 2000s and late 1990s, Benz and Bimmer were pioneers in advanced electronic technology innovation. That explains WHY their cars of that period also had the lowest reliability scores. Nobody else was experimenting in the field.
@4MATICbenz I guess "reluctant" is a 'harsh' word but I think we can agree that the "futuristic" Lexus LS in 1990 did force them to implement advanced tech. I mean if they didn't then ppl will think of those cars as 'overpriced' since they would focus on power seats and less on the structure. Nonetheless, cars should try to use as less electronics with more quality.
God , who cares about high-tech gizmos and gadgets!?! I cant believe the BMW and Merc came in the last two spots b/c they werent high tech enough. Being less high-tech makes them more functional and easy-to-operate. Besides, they both seem to offer plenty of features anyway. Also the Bimmer and Merc seemed to deliver better driving characteristics, and in my opinion are far superior in terms of sporty SUV-like looks. But hey, we all have different opinions....
Thus, we want to get more out of less. We want to reduce the gadgets without the sacrifice of fuel economy, comfort, and performance. It's the mechanics (which still need to be reduced) that is the FOUNDATION of the car, while the electronics just "helps" it. So, what if the electronics FAIL?! For example, I'm more concerned about if the seats comfortable than whether they are powered. I think a VW Golf is more of a luxury car over a Lexus. As long there's improvement, that's what I care about.
Also, the thing that needs to be focused for improvment of the car's fuel consumption, comfort, safety, and performance the most is the engine, the heaviest. It is the one that does the consumption. If we can reduce the weight and size of the engine without the sacrifice of horsepower, torque, and durability, then pretty much there is less work for improving the transmission, the brakes, suspension, etc. and fewer implications of the electronics.
@4MATICbenz Since you mentioned "driving characteristics", I hear people talking about it less and more on gizmos. They, for example, compare an E-class to a Hyundai and think the Hyundai is a "bargain" because of its gizmos but that's all they care about. What good are those airbags if the passenger comparment is crushed or the ESC on the Lexus GX when it almost rolls over?
@4MATICbenz "Nobody else was experimenting in the field." The reason can lie in Germany's curvy roads as well as the AUTOBAHN, especially, which has forced them to innovate faster. In fact that's why those companies lobby the German government to not put a speed limit.
Stop fucking calling these cars SUV's, Where is the Utility side of these cars? It's not i could put all my tools in it and drive onto a building site, everyone would laugh. And the sports side, it's not like it's a fucking performance vehicle!
man, i never said lexus's were reliable and actually Gm's are very Unreliable, in fact they make it so unreliable so that people will have to buy new cars again.
it's not the best handling of the group, the bmw is. anyway, the only time japanese cars turn out to be good is when they copy european cars. lexus was actually caught taking apart an m3 when building the is-f, and guess what? it's still shit! nissan did it with the gt-r, and i wouldn't be surprised if lexus did it with the x5 for the rx.
why would you want a car that can only be good by copying? even if the germans are a little worse, at least they did it on their own...
wtf do you know about copying, coolerdude44. you do the same thing a lot of bloody americans do: accuse the japanese of copying and then kis german ass...germans hate americans more than anyone else.
and talking about copying, its no coincidence that the big 3 american beggar companies are releasing new cars that look just like lexus/acura/infiniti. buick designmanager even admitted that they are trying to be like lexus with the buick enclave.
RX 450h comes up second behind the Touareg, mostly because of the RXs lack of offroad & towing capacity, but Id say this is a very positive showing for the new Lexus model.
Basically it's too much like a car or this group....
Why are there suddenly more diesels? At least it seams like there are. Jeep is coming out with a diesel Grand Cherokee and Liberty and Honda is coming out with a Diesel Pilot and Odyssey.
because diesel is the best choice. they are far more reliable than hybrids, and emit less over time due to the clean way they are built. they get great gas mileage, i'm surprised we americans didn't catch on sooner.
Not so true anymore. As the development of diesel engines goes further and deeper, they become expensive to maintain. Millions of stupid sensors, filters and so on.
do you know what you're talking about? they might be slightly more expensive than the more primitive diesels, but they're still way cheaper than normal engines, and thousands cheaper to run than a hybrid.
han šin šunšan...f......g CHINAMAN doesnt no anything about cars!!!! GO BACK TO CHINA!!!! Every other car journalist says that the BMW x5 is the best 4x4 in the world!!! han šin šunšan...
these all look more like crossovers rather than suv's. Where are the good cars like the escalade and my personal favorite the lincoln navigator. I know i know but its an acquired taste with its benefits.
Does anybody know how high are the selling numbers of normal diesel cars in the USA??? I'm from Europe and I was quite suprised to see those 3 SUVs fitted with a diesel engine. I always thought that the Americans have diesels only in trucks and that they never buy them in ordinary cars.
i live in los angeles and its hard to find a diseel car in u.s , this is just a show , the government plan this, they want us to burn a gas , exampel 2005 S banz the gas mileg for europ is 27city 34 highway , but in u.s same car you can get 17 city , itsnt it wierd ?
do you now how long left to we finish oil ? the earth start making oil from many many million years a go ,we start using it for max 300 years ?and while we using earth dosnt stop making oil! government's scientist's r saying the oil is almost down but did u know we are 88 million years far from that ?
These cars have very insignificant sales numbers, in large part because very high diesel prices even out the running costs. There are nearly no diesel cars in America, and very, very few diesel trucks. Most large ones are even gas V8s. Hope that answers your question.
Oh you also may want to know though that diesels are the 'tougher' engine here in America, which I believe is the opposite in Europe.
Oh, now I see. Part 3 wasn't available last time I watched that comparison, but I knew the Cobalt SS won by lap time.
Anyway, It's not just Motortrend's crew who like GTI. It was the TopGear's car of the year, Clarkson likes it. Fifth Gear said it is the greatest combination of refinment and sportiness. Power isn't everything. It's just the best all rounder in terms of solidity because it doesn't compromise other things for the purpose of lap times.
i dont wanna sound dumb here, but i think a porche cayenne deserves a spot here, and a range rover too. there both in the luxury suv department no? and i think range rover can be diesel if im not mistaken. anyways if im wrong im wrong no biggie - i hope lexus wins
I would totally agree with you there and not forgetting to mention Audi's Q7. But I think they are only testing these since they are new to the market perhaps?
they really did a great job on the styling of the new RX. The first time I saw it, I hated it but it really grew on me. Too bad it doesn't drive as well as it looks.
Very biased.

malbert34 2 years ago 2
yeah bud thats why it would rape all of those pieces, they dont want to compare a good car to a pile of dog shit
bikeamerica 2 years ago
Rape, yeah right, it would probably fall apart.
malbert34 2 years ago 2
yeah thats why my friend has a lexus suv wit 100,00 miles on it and its falling apart. every gm car ive ever had has lasted to a min of 220,000 miles
bikeamerica 2 years ago
man, i never said lexus's were reliable and actually Gm's are very Unreliable, in fact they make it so unreliable so that people will have to buy new cars again.
malbert34 2 years ago 2
Really? The last GM car I owned totally gave up at 87,000 miles...
banstaman 2 years ago
Lexus RX 450h had the quickest 0-60 @ 6.4s, 0.3s faster than the X5 and more than 1.4s faster than the Touareg.
Lexus FTW.

who cares? it handles like a boat.
coolerdude44 2 years ago
It's the best handing of the group.....your point?
None of them were made to be sports cars. If your looking 4 something sporty...your looking in the wrong category.
Toyota4Life 2 years ago
it's not the best handling of the group, the bmw is. anyway, the only time japanese cars turn out to be good is when they copy european cars. lexus was actually caught taking apart an m3 when building the is-f, and guess what? it's still shit! nissan did it with the gt-r, and i wouldn't be surprised if lexus did it with the x5 for the rx.
why would you want a car that can only be good by copying? even if the germans are a little worse, at least they did it on their own...
coolerdude44 2 years ago
wtf do you know about copying, coolerdude44. you do the same thing a lot of bloody americans do: accuse the japanese of copying and then kis german ass...germans hate americans more than anyone else.
and talking about copying, its no coincidence that the big 3 american beggar companies are releasing new cars that look just like lexus/acura/infiniti. buick designmanager even admitted that they are trying to be like lexus with the buick enclave.
even bmw copied from mercedes...
lavakava 2 years ago
dude, the French hate Americans the most, not the Germans.
malbert34 2 years ago
RX 450h comes up second behind the Touareg, mostly because of the RXs lack of offroad & towing capacity, but Id say this is a very positive showing for the new Lexus model.
Basically it's too much like a car or this group....
Lexus FTW

Why are there suddenly more diesels? At least it seams like there are. Jeep is coming out with a diesel Grand Cherokee and Liberty and Honda is coming out with a Diesel Pilot and Odyssey.
gp40mc 2 years ago
because diesel is the best choice. they are far more reliable than hybrids, and emit less over time due to the clean way they are built. they get great gas mileage, i'm surprised we americans didn't catch on sooner.
coolerdude44 2 years ago
Me too. Europe's had them forever.
gp40mc 2 years ago
Not so true anymore. As the development of diesel engines goes further and deeper, they become expensive to maintain. Millions of stupid sensors, filters and so on.
DaimlerAGbenzPower 2 years ago 2
do you know what you're talking about? they might be slightly more expensive than the more primitive diesels, but they're still way cheaper than normal engines, and thousands cheaper to run than a hybrid.
coolerdude44 2 years ago
Compared to what, the hybrids? you have to be kidding me.
bmtimv 2 years ago
Because its a clean fuel.

these all look more like crossovers rather than suv's.

Tommy493 3 years ago
i live in los angeles and its hard to find a diseel car in u.s , this is just a show , the government plan this, they want us to burn a gas , exampel 2005 S banz the gas mileg for europ is 27city 34 highway , but in u.s same car you can get 17 city , itsnt it wierd ?
mustflyhigher 3 years ago
It is, but I was mostly surprised by the US spec Smart. It is truly a gas guzzler.
But there have been plenty of weird affairs in the history and not just in America. For example:
1. In 80ties, Citroen developed an engine capable of 1litre per 100km, not sure how much mpg is it exactly. But where is it?
2. Saab developed special fuel saving transmission. But they were taken over GM right after and it disappeared.
3. GM killed electric vehicle, twice.

do you now how long left to we finish oil ? the earth start making oil from many many million years a go ,we start using it for max 300 years ?and while we using earth dosnt stop making oil! government's scientist's r saying the oil is almost down but did u know we are 88 million years far from that ?
mustflyhigher 3 years ago
The US gallon is .83 gallons per Imperial gallon, which they use everywhere in Europe.
bg1379 3 years ago
These cars have very insignificant sales numbers, in large part because very high diesel prices even out the running costs. There are nearly no diesel cars in America, and very, very few diesel trucks. Most large ones are even gas V8s. Hope that answers your question.
Oh you also may want to know though that diesels are the 'tougher' engine here in America, which I believe is the opposite in Europe.

Rear of the new Lexus RX looks too much like the new Mazda 6's rear.

let me guess... THE VW WINS!!
motortrend sold out to vw. anything on a comp test will lose if there's a vw in the test.
i'm embarassed for you motortrend
NATEandtheMONKEY 3 years ago
Like what vid?
sspope 3 years ago
I've seen all tests here on Ytube and they never tested any VW.
sspope 3 years ago
Part 1: Sport Compact Car Comparison.
search that. watch all parts. this is common for motortrend(on the web)
they have tested lots of vw's?
NATEandtheMONKEY 3 years ago
I thought the Cobalt SS won.
sspope 3 years ago
Oh, now I see. Part 3 wasn't available last time I watched that comparison, but I knew the Cobalt SS won by lap time.
Anyway, It's not just Motortrend's crew who like GTI. It was the TopGear's car of the year, Clarkson likes it. Fifth Gear said it is the greatest combination of refinment and sportiness. Power isn't everything. It's just the best all rounder in terms of solidity because it doesn't compromise other things for the purpose of lap times.
sspope 3 years ago
And it will probably remain on top until Ford Focus RS arrives. But then new GTI-R will come. Let's wait and see.

i dont wanna sound dumb here, but i think a porche cayenne deserves a spot here, and a range rover too. there both in the luxury suv department no? and i think range rover can be diesel if im not mistaken. anyways if im wrong im wrong no biggie - i hope lexus wins
Ji99i3 3 years ago
I would totally agree with you there and not forgetting to mention Audi's Q7. But I think they are only testing these since they are new to the market perhaps?

Porsche Cayenne deserves nothing because it's a hideous thing. Uglier than that Lexus!!

Lexus has somewhat weird styling, so I think the VW might win.

they really did a great job on the styling of the new RX. The first time I saw it, I hated it but it really grew on me. Too bad it doesn't drive as well as it looks.
