"just as the piece was reaching a crescendo" and "picked up where he left off" - both totally wrong, and could have been easily confirmed by reading any of the actual eyewitness accounts. the reason Gilbert stopped it was because it was during the last minutes of Mahler 9, which are quiet and serene. he then went back to an earlier point so that the piece could die out like it's supposed to. nice reporting.
One time my cellphone went off in a cinema and I was so embarrassed, I usually turn off my phone (in fact, most of the time my phone is on silent anyway) but I had just forgotten. But this example is ridiculous - 6 minutes!? I do actually think they should always ask to have phones turned off so that people don't have the excuse of forgetting. Because sometimes we do.
Just like harrasing, litering or disturbing the public order is penalty by law. Anoying cell phones in public places, cinemas, concerts should be enough for jail or huge fines.... PLEASE GIVE A THUMBS UP TO THIS COMMENT!!!!
@broadwaymike92 No my friend it is NOT annoying, cell phones ringing in Theatres are a completely lack of respect and civism. You should respect the rights of others to enjoy the event by turning off you device BEFORE entering the facility. Some people should start to understand that their "Apple life" has to be off in a public event or area like this.
Why is there no video of the interruption? Is it a legal fear of the phone's owner to file a suit for breaking into some bad understood privacy? We should be able to see the guy for people to learn what not to do when attending concerts and similar events. Shame on him.
As an actor myself, Cell Phones during a performance is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo annoying!! I can't count how many shows I've seen and done people forget to turn off their cell phones!!
The most recent cell phones will always ring their alarms - no matter whether they're tuned off or have run out of battery. If you've got iPhones or other modern cell phones, do not forget to turn all the alarms off during concerts.
Having an alarm ringing during a show happened to me once because I had never had a cell phone that turned itself on!!! Fortunately enough, it was vibrating in my pocket and I stopped the alarm immediately after I realized it was mine. It was awfully embarrassing.

I know this conductor. He's a f***ing diva. I am not surprised.

@Ysacoelfua The f*** diva is the person who thinks they can get away without turning off his/her phone during a concert.

don't know why concert hallls don't install electronic devices that block all wireless signals. many libraries in asian countries do.

I can't imagine that how the sound of iPhone interrupts the ending of Mahler IX...and the conductor interrupts the concert!
