@oreannekraft Tails of lizards, ears of swine, Chicken gizzards soaked in brine, On your feet, bee not afraid, You're the greatest with a blade! Earlier it's: Tails of lizards, ears of swine, Chicken gizzards soaked in brine, Now thy eyes with mine entwine, Thy will is broken, Thou art MINE!
Kaye was brilliant at just about everything - dancer, actor, singer, Master Chef, 747 pilot, even aided his cardiac surgeon friend when doing heart operations etc etc
Poor Rathbone, a good fencer, but always destined to be defeated by the "hero" of the picture, whether it's Errol Flynn or Danny Kaye. Even so, Basil looks pretty good for 63!

I had to order this one on DVD just so I'd have a copy for my future offspring. The look on Ravenhurst's face when Giacamo's skill level keeps changing from total amateur to genius fencer is hilarious.
this is one of the best scenes in the entire film! i watched it for the first time in about 5 years last night and i thought "why the crud did we put off watching this movie for five years?" it was even funnier than i remembered it! the top 3 best scenes in this movie are: 1.Swordfight 2. Pellet with the poison 3.snapping scene in Gwendolyn's chambers.
This movie deserves a remake but who would be good enough to match the performances of Kaye/Rathbone and the other great actors in this movie? This really was a special mix of people, everyone fit their roles just perfectly.
In fact Rathbone was a champion fencer but even he said that Danny Kaye was so skilled in mimicry that he was his equal after only 3 days lessons. He was replaced by the ferncing choreographer cos he couldn't keep up with Kaye as he was 63 at the time.
How on earth were they able to film this without just cracking up? It would be impossible for me.

Tears of lizzard, ears of swine
??? kicked and guessed and soaked in brian ???
On your feet, you are not afraid.

@MrBazza86 Danny Kayewas one of the most talented men to ever grace the screen, ever! No one like him, at all and never will be.

Do you think that bit where he drops his sword and just starts screaming and waving his arms around was improvised?

The part with the candles was a nod to Basil Rathbone's earlier movie, The Mark of Zorro, where he and Tyrone Power did the same maneuver.

Rathbone claimed that this was the only duel he ever enjoyed losing on film.

Wait, did you just call Angela Lansbury a bitch? Is that even possible to do without terrible instant karmic retribution?

Oh my gosh, not only is this hilarious, but also one of the coolest movie swordfights ever.
If you want to see Basil Rathbone at the top of his fencing game, look up the duel from "The Mark of Zorro". He's fantastic in it.

Yep....the great Ralph Faulkner himself. Kaye was excellent in stage combat.

@G285LNY fencing moves have showed! Steps, attacks, riposts etc. I'm a fencer too. :) Bloody fine fencing. :) Plus Danny is the fun of it. :)

@G285LNY That, and although Danny Kaye didn't have fencing experience, he had incredible natural agility and reflexes which helped make up for it.
