Overdrive is just a kind of distortion among a few. You will find various websites which describe how each method works. Try Google. It's too much to explain it with 500 letters. ;o)
@wwwPepeMusicDE hello, im looking for a distortion that i cant find, is the rise against bassist Joe Principe, i cant find his distortion, can you help me?
I am not familiar with "Rise Against", so I don't know what the bassist uses. Maybe he used a very expensive "boutique" pedal, maybe something cheap. There are so many distortion pedals for guitar out there that can be used for bass as well. Maybe he used a special amp and cranked it up to the maximum. There are some bass forums in the web, maybe you should search them and give it a try there. I can't help at the moment.
@wwwPepeMusicDE i read that he uses 2 chanels, one clean, one distortioned, but ive been in a concert with similar efects and i was this overdrive pedal
I'm in doubt on what to buy, shall I go for a EHX Bass Muff Pi, the ODB-3 or for an MXR El Grande Bass Fuzz? Or just stay and use my Boss DS2 (modded for bass)?
Everything I play in my demos are own melody lines I record on the fly. If anything has similarities to existing songs, then it's mostly coincidence.
With bass guitar you can get huge distortion that can be suitable for heavy metal. But if another guitarist wants to add his power chords to it, it might sound terrible. It's rather recommendable for a bass player freak out alongside with the drummer.
If you want to use the ODB-3 with a normal electric guitar, it might sound terrible as well. I couldn't get a decent sound out of it, but other guitarists swear by it. Try it out for yourself!
Okay. The ODB-3 has a wet/dry knob that regulates the amount of distortion signal over the clean signal. This is a very important feature, because the original bass sound should still be present. Most distortion pedals don't have this feature, thus resulting in very muddy sounds when used with bass. You can experiment with other distortion pedals not specially designed for bass (BOSS HM-2 or SD-2), but the best results are those with the original signal alongside with the distortion.
To split your signal, you can use adaptors (split the signal, one jack into the distortion pedal, reunite the signals afterwards) or better a unit like the BOSS LS-2 "Line Selector" which is a very clever pedal that can be used for different occasions. With products like the LS-2 you can do the wet/dry thing like the ODB-3 does.
Another pedal that is designed for bass is the Ibanez Phat Hed Bass Overdrive. Normally I don't like the newer Ibanez pedals, but this one is worth a try!
@wwwPepeMusicDE Hey, so I've been playing bass for about 1 year so I don't know all of the technical stuff. My set-up is Orange Crush 50BXT -> ODB-3 -> Epiphone EB-0. How do you propose I get the more heavy metal feel with what I have now?
I hope you are playing with a few band mates. Let the guitarists do the metal distortion job! Bass distortion doesn't automatically mean "Heavy Metal". I know a few nice songs that are far away from being metal, but an overdriven bass fits very good there, because the electric guitar ISN'T distorted. If you distort every instrument, you'll get nothing but pure mud!
@wwwPepeMusicDE Okay sure bro, oi I have been learning a lot of muse over the past 6 months so is there any good settings with the ODB-3 or any other pieces of equipment (other effects) that I can use to enhance the distortion to pretty much imitate that of Christopher Wolstenholme?
@wwwPepeMusicDE I've used it on an electric guitar and it just takes some fine tuning really. I really had to dial in a tone to get that high gain distortion i was looking for. I pretty much did it just to experiment and it came out sounding pretty good in my opinion
My pedal has just suddenly stopped working. It's not had any water, drop or any form of physical damage. Any suggestions as to what may have caused this?
Send your request to the Bossarea Forum (bossarea[dot]com/forum) with a few pics of the insides. It could have several causes, so please define what it does and what it does not do at the moment (i.e.: does it let the bypass sound pass through, when connected and powered?, does the check diode light up when engaged?, etc.).
You will be asked to register, but it's worth it. No spam or commercials, just great guys with lots of experience there!
Thanks for the video man! I had been considering buying this pedal for a while, and this video (and your EQ settings, which I may just steal for my own uses :D) convinced me that this was the pedal for me.
Well, seven months ago a French user asked for the same part! It's something I played on the fly and isn't based on a song - like every bit I play in my demos.
I tried to write the melody down on paper back then, at least parts of it that should make it easy for you to understand how to play the rest of it. You can find it here:
Sure, it cannot harm anything! Every bass pedal can be used with a guitar as well and vice versa. Try it out if you like the sound. I didn't like the ODB-3 with my guitar, though!
@wwwPepeMusicDE yup.. it works pretty.. I was just searching the features of this pedal and I came across with this video and I thought it was really for bass only. I think it works well. thank you so much for clarifying. keep those videos coming!
It's not necessary because there are something like nineteen other demos of the same pedal where they only use the effect they're demonstrating. I suggest you folks check those out instead.
Of course your amp sounds different! That's why I don't use an amp for my bass and guitar demo videos. An amp alters the original signal (good amps in a good way).
I want to supply all of you with almost unaltered demo sounds that you can run through your own amp to see how it will sound with your setup. In my opinion this is more meaningful than beautiful demos through an Ampeg or a Mesa Boogie or whatsoever.
The cable that I plugged in above the "Check thing" is a 9V power adaptor. The "Check"-LED simply indicates if your pedal is on or off and if your battery (if you use one) is still good.
Well then. I was considering buying one of these, and I was quite discouraged by a video I just watched. This, however, has sealed my decision. I'm buying it on Thursday.
Well, it's just an old and bad bass guitar by the brand with the three crossed tuning forks, whose guitars I absolutely not like at all. But this one is my only bass since I haven't found the right one for me yet - although I'm working in a music shop!! The search goes on and on... :o(
If money was no problem I had a custom built Fender or an Alembic. ;o)
but I would split the lines so I had one going to my amp and another going the mixer.. but I guess I'm pretty set for fold back.. cause when we play on stage.. I'm set up right next to the 18inc sub :D..
Cool video! Can you say to me what is the melody which you play in 1:34? Thank you beforehand. (and having grieved for poor English me... I am French!)
Thanks for your interest! It hadn't bothered me if you had asked me in French. Though I do not really speak French I can decipher most of it. And I've come across much worse English than yours! ;o)
I tried to write the melody down on paper, at least parts of it that should make it easy for you to understand how to play the rest of it. You can find it here:
say if I was playing a Passive Wired bass, through this pedal then into a DI box (varying between a clean and distorted). would that work?.. like a kind of .. Geddy Lee sound..
It's worth a try! But if you want to stand on a stage or in a session room to play bass guitar, use a bass amp or you won't hear yourself when the others start to play! ;o)
Cool thankyou... yeah I have the amp sorted.. I'm currently playing through a Zoom B2 IU. the multi effects pedal and I'm using the three pronged jack to go straight into the mixer and the 6.5mm output to go into my amp as fold back.. the problem is that the mixer doesn't seem to handle my pedal very well because I'm always in the yellow or red... and I'm not liking the Zoom much.. so I thought if I just got this and a Dunlop Cry baby I would be set.
As you can see in the very first picture and in the video explanation text I didn't use an amp or a preamp at all! It's the dry and original signal, enriched by a Marshall Supervibe Chorus (only to make the sound spacious), a delay and a reverb pedal. I want to put sounds here that are almost unaltered. If you want to know how your bass amp will sound with the overdrive pedal, just send my demo sounds into its input! ;o)
my friend bought it just for posering..now he fucking pisses me off ..
