Any die hard cricket fans would agree that the umpires during this 80-81 series was downright dismal & the Indians got a lot of bad decisions. Gavaskar's a person, if he feels he was genuniely out, he would walk. The reason why he took Chetan Chauhan off the field, was some Aus. player used abusive words to him. Hang on, no need to impugn Gavaskar's sense of fairplay based on that incident...in that same series he walked several times (Bill Lawry mentions it too)...what happened after is him losing it after a tough, confrontational series, and he's said he regrets it (as he should). But back then umpiring was nowhere near as unbiased as it is today, and Lillee had no business gesticulating like that either...Lillee got away with a lot of over the top aggression (verging on abuse) throughout his career.

The whole series, confrontations, umpiring bias is all well documented. Knowing the man's track record and the simple matter that he walked throughout the series, I'm willing to take his word on that. You may feel free to disagree.

And his calling Aussies "poor sports" is a completely separate issue. Let's not confuse Gavaskar the player with Gavaskar the commentator.

These guys play on friendlier pitches and under more favourable rules. No discredit to them, but they must not be compared to players who played in that era. A Border, a Richards, a Sunny, a Vishy, a Crowe, a Gower or a Chappell is worth his weight in gold; never mind the runs, average and other statistics.
