Damn, could I know where you got this footage ? I would love to see this show... If I understand correctly they also played Mekanik in the same session ? (see videos by theinsectmachine666 , it's the same stage right ? ) So anyway, if you remember where you got this, I'd be happy man, that would be a nice archive to add to my collection.
Vander was an interesting bird. On one hand a relatively fearless and gifted, if somewhat unpolished native talent. On the other a grandstanding parade major, more about the drumming as dance/performance art than profound explorations of the universe of rhythm. I've loved and hated him for 30 years now. Go figure.
The final correction is IS, not WAS. Magma is even now on their 40th anniversary tour, playing completely new music (seach "Felicite Thosz"), and though the 60-yr-old Vander has long ago left soloing behind, he's still the drummer, as well as composer, vocalist and soul of Magma.
I don't think it's grandstanding in any way. It's actually sometimes slightly embarrassing to hear Vander wail and screech in his vocals, or grimace during the music, and it's a similar outpouring of everything he feels within him in his drum solos. I can see how it might appear that way superficially--but this guy is for real.
I guess that is unschooled/unpolished, and I myself sometimes wonder if Vander avoids regular beats because he can't keep to them. But I respect the outpouring of energy in his drums and his vocals. He puts himself out there, and holds nothing back.
Maybe it helps to understand the way Vander takes his music as one with his entire being. He's not a man performing on the drums, he expresses the drums with his entire being--face, movements and gestures. It's why there are so many outbursts, musically unnecessary motions and vocal snippets in his drum solos (much like Keith Jarrett on the piano, I might add.)
As a hardcore Magma fan, I take offence at some of these comments, which strike me as off the mark in places, though I think I also understand well where you may be coming from with them.

Okay, so this dude is good...but not THAT good. No offense, it's just not up to the standard that it could be. Still talented, just slightly overrated imo.
Hey, I have a right to my own opinion. I just thought it was going to be different. It's not like I said, "oh man, fuck this stupid gay shit, blahblahblah". I just stated that while it was good, I didn't think it was particularly mind-blowing. I'll bet a lot of stuff I like you would think is just 'pretty good' and not amazing like I think, Open your mind, friend, chill out.

Nr 1 drummer in rock. Imagine Hendrix still alive around 1975, playing with Vander and Top - aaaargh! Would give "power trio" a whole new meaning, huh?
He's doing a frikking drum solo with his left hand only - it's frightening. WEll done.

@djcrowbar this was back in his early days, when he took out his sociopathic rage on a drum kit.
