I have an Ibm aptiva also it's got an amd K6 processor and I have windows xp installed with 64mb of ram and it has a brand new 40gb hard drive.
I have kept this thing in action for a long time.
Mine was made in 97 also.
Are you running windows 98 on that thing?
I have xp on mine

@crazysteig About HDD failure,do you have an new HDD and Windows 98 SE (or not SE)?You can do that and install on the new hdd the Windows 98 again!
Hint:When asking for missing files,click browse (IF EXISTING there)then select the cd-rom drive thet contains Win98 setup files. :D
