He said where's my cigarette ! smoking was very common and acceptable back then, notice the relaxed atmosphere, such a wonderful band I have always enjoyed listening to them, thanks very much for posting this it brings back such wonderful memories!!
My hearing's not that great, but is it possible that he's saying "where's my signal at"? Maybe there was a temporary problem, like a shortage with an amp or guitar pickup? I'm probably wrong, but it does seem unlikely that a band member about to start up a live studio set would be trying to "light one up" seconds before the beginning of a song?
America, Esp. Bunnell, had the ability to write melodies and hooks (both in song structure and riffs) that made for songs that were immediately catchy and lingered in your mind, despite the lyrics being often obtuse and seeming random.
Thanks WingMan (Crawlers MG, Phoenix AZ) for sending this link to me... I needed to hear some good music this morning... I appreciate you thinking about me brother... -TinMan - Crawlers MG...
Some of the stuff that is out there these day's will never have the life that song's that America put out. These guys played and lived rock which later became classic rock.
I have many albums of America now counting their very newest album and I have to admit and say that these guys are the most Awesome band ever to come from the 70's what the music buisness is like today is just really awful now songs like this are real rock n roll which is what I love the most and I truely mean it
Yeshua, You chose the things that the world considers foolish to confound the wise so that the chalice would remain safe inside the least likely of sinners. In this same fashion it is NOT the well churched & self righteous who hold the key, it is the one the world views as a scumbag who will be admitted to the sacred sanctuary. Worthy is he who thinks on a level entirely apart from all others, apppears selfish, yet would lay down his life to protect another. YHWH it is for him that I now beg.
I was surprised, I thought he was just a guitarist waiting for everybody to prepare and suddenly after that awesome play he just went to the mic and sang, I was like, wtf, so he's the lead. lol
@able506 I just checked it out after checking this video, that's where I was taken by surprise that they all sang. Very nice. I used to listen to this when I was a kid, had this album/cd in my parent's collection.
It is a pity Dan Peak´s death. It has put an end in any chance of having these three awesome musicians back making music (I mean REAL music, not the ones we unfortunately have to listen to these days...)
what an amazing intro for such a most amazing song! gives me the chills! Tin Man is a masterpiece.lovely lead vocals and voices harmony of all of the boys!
young, beautiful and talented. RIP Dan. thanks for the beauty. a grandma fan.
I can not remember how many times I heard this song in my Dad's car on AM radio going to pick-up my mom from work. How I hated the big powerlines on our way there
WOW, I was still in diapers during these recording; however, I remember them fondly. Things seemed so simple back then and in a sense for a child they were. I don't think they were so simple for my parent but they never made it seem otherwise. Major just chill music. Thanks for posting these classic and endearing clips.
This songf has been in my head for about a week now after visiting my dr's office and he had on easy listening music on in the wating room. I'm 50 now and was a little young to enjoy America back in the day but i'm loving them now. Thia ans most of there hits are going straight to my ipod.
the guitars are 5 stars as well as the bass, yes, great bassline.5star band. they are the total package! Dan was lovely. what a gentle soul. God bless you Dan.
All the best Dewey and Gerry. a 60 yr old fan. peace.
What beautiful music they made whether they were in studio or live, they always sounded great! America lives on forever thru the music they created . Amazing !!!
I love this song!1972 or 1973 coming home from a trip with my nina and nino. almost home now on a nice summer day while this song was on the radio. being 13 years old life was peaceful then!
Great music, horrible guitars. As to why musicans back then felt the need to change from glorious Gibson and Martin to plastic Ovation had to be the result of heavy, heavy drug use.
I used to sing to this way back high school there is a group of musician thought me how it is a wonderful experience i rally loved this song with guitar. :)
This was just one of the many great tunes by America. My understanding is that all 3 (Bunnell, Beckley, and Peek) met in England as all three of their fathers were in the military at the time there. As stated, just one of many of their awesome songs. Check out other tunes in this session...Ventura Highway is outstanding!
anyone that says this is a terrible session is freakin nuts. this song was never played as good as this one was. the guitar riff at the beginning is very nice, northern california sinsimillia music.
@Baritone45 There's no such thing as a "worst session" or "lousy session" with America, all their sessions are great 'cause they're a great band! BTW, who are you to call this a lousy session? Think you can do better, huh? xD

another classic soul rock group love their sound and style real music will always sound as good as it did when u first heard it thank you for sharing ur greatness
@mmoneysell2 maybe because he wasn't actually in the band but a session guy who was nonetheless probably paid pretty well for the gig, just like the drummer. stop looking for something that isn't there.
The argument is that of closeup shots of the African-American bass player.....not about how much money he was paid.....or being a member of the band. Did you ever see them live in concert.....maybe not , because you are blind and can't see what was partially omitted in the video. That is the question!
@mmoneysell2 calvin samuels was a very well-respected and highly sought after bass player. but as he was not a member of america, why would you expect closeups of him? and if i had seen them in concert at the time i would have certainly been focused on the guys who wrote and sang the songs and probably not paying so much attention to the rhythm section. does that make me racist? no. it is merely circumstantial that samuels was black.
If he was a "very well-respected and highly sought after bass player", why not a closeup shot of him and the drummer. It's about highlighting contributions that great artists have made regardless of their skin color, unless you don't believe that. One must pay attention to the whole by increasing their peripheral vision.
@mmoneysell2 thank you for conceeding my point, aristotle. so you are just upset they didn't give more shots of the guys NOT in the band, regardless of skin color, instead of the guys who actually wrote and sang the song to begin with? if the white drummer wasn't show as much either, it kind of make your racism claim moot, does it not? if this were a video of the mamas and papas would you be equally pissed they didn't show more of drummer eddie ho? or would that be another example of racism?
