The tale of 18 days is pure legend. The real history of the genesis of this opera is persuadingly accounted by Pietro Buscaroli, La morte di Mozart (Mozart's death). A book that probably never a German or Anglosaxon reader will have translated, so that German and anglosaxon musicologists can carry on their lazy theories (like about Bach. Buscaroli has written a fundamental Bach's biography as well).
It's odd how many critics, Blom and Einstein for example - have pointed out Mozart's supposed indifference to Tito. A masterpiece in cold stone, I think it has been called. Yet it stirs the emotions! I recall my astonishment when I first heard this opera, the Davis version on Philips with Janet Baker. Heavenly music.
This is nice, but you'd think for a finale there could be a bit more visual action. Even on stage, the this would be a bit dull. Now, don't get me wrong, the music is great. I'm only taking about the director.
La Clemenza was Mozart's last opera. Legend has it that he wrote it in only ten days from the time he received the commission. We are also very glad that La Clemenza has found a place here on YouTube. It is a testament to the genius of a man who only three months after its performance would be dead at 35.
Mozart interrupted work on the Magic Flute in May of 1791 to compose La Clemenza di Tito and did complete the Magic Flute when he returned to Vienna after the coronation of Leopold in mid September, 1791. In any event La Clemenza was Mozart's last opera seria and his last commissioned work before his death in December of 1791.
Where is the introduction to the final (the best part of the whole opera)?

The style of La Clemenza is very, very different from the style of The Magic Flute
despite both operas were composed almost at the same time, summer-autumn 1791.
I find this fact amazing. Different subject-matters do not explain sufficiently a so drastic change in style, in my opinion.

I agree. It is probably my favorite opera next to Die Zauberflote.

Close, but Tito was more likely written in 18 days, also the last opera completed by WAM was Magic Flute.

Agreed, this is an amazing opera and I don't see why LA Opera doesn't do it!
