  • I'm sorry, did this imbseal just said it's better to drive then a Lamborghini???

    .....HAHAHAHAHHAA!

  • A really good concept. I think the front wheels should be brought inside the width of cockpit. this will make the car more compact (with lesser impression on ground). Secondly it should have hybrd option, in case of low battery.

  • @ParamLowe You would narrow the track? But it would handle worse. There is a series hybrid version

  • You buy the Aptera car you will NEVER have to buy another car until 2050 !! It is that futuristic !

  • It gets good mileage, but I don't think the safety rating would be very high.

  • we need a new electric model t revolution

  • Wrong! Batteries (the "lesser tyranny") block massive non-fuel-motor prod. I have just built Frontal air turbines, which cause vibrations reliably to generate electronically sufficient for 100km/p/h (two 3000w 48v mag-drives in rear) - self-propelled light commuter cars (plastic-framed), that need no fuel-motors OR batteries. Most of you (including Young) are MANY YEARS BEHIND! Aptera was CUTTING EDGE - two years ago! Pivo2 - last year.

  • For a two & one half passenger vehicle it has excellent design & engineering, safety features exceed all automotive safety standards, very good efficiency , very good comfort features, excellent handling & really fun to drive. I am on the list for two.

  • great looking car keep up the good work.

did u see the lincvolt car neil young the singer is trying to build?i'm betting the possibility of a 100 mpg 1959 lincoln could be done.i thank neil young for putting his money time and life into this.

he needs our support as much as the world needs his right now i think.

    check out his car here

    lincvolt

  • Neat! Does the techno music come with the car, or is that just what you guys at popmech listen to

  • you can have your choice...comes equipped with XM satellite radio,

  • Na endlich, ein Auto bei dem man mal nachgedacht hat was die Leute brauchen, und kein Auto für die Tester der Autozeitschriften. Ich würde (werde) mir nur ein Auto kaufen das zukunftsicher ist.

  • This thing sure is ugly. why not 4 wheel?????

  • too inefficient

  • Seems that the Aptera has more in common with a helicopter frame then a car!

  • if u get hit by a truck in this ur dead point blank -_-

  • and yet we have bicycles, skateboards, scooters, motorcycles, golf carts all on the road.

    what was your point again?

  • Comment removed

  • It's made of carbon composites 10x's stronger than steel, the stuff Indy cars are made of. You'd be thrown, but it would roll and hold up better than a normal car.

  • yea and it has a roll cage built in it

  • If you get hit by a truck in anything but another truck or semi for that matter your dead. So maybe we should all drive trucks.... Idiot

  • He's is saying 4 wheels is better than 3. He never suggested driving trucks, he suggested 4 wheels is better than 3. Idiot. Oh and no your not automaticaly dead if you get hit by a truck.

  • but 4 wheels aren't better than 3. this car has crumple zones, made of carbon composites that airplanes are made out of, has a roll cage.

this car is safer than 90% of the fiberglass 4 wheeled death trap out there.

  • i want it!!! it looks so coool!!

  • Very Cool Design, but im not sure about it being really light, and being a 2 passenger car

  • Safe? It has 3 wheels, on American roads it's super unsafe. I apreciat that your doing something, but that thing is not safe.

  • At first I thought the same thing, but you have to admit you are ten times safer than some one on a motorcycle right?

  • Of course it's safer than motorcycle. It's also safer than a bicycle. But it's not any of those. It's a car. It's trying to compare itself to other cars, and make itself better. I don't care how advanced it is it has three wheels which is not safe at least on American roads.

  • Uh three wheels is pretty balanced. Dipshit.

  • Lol go back to watching your animate, 3 wheels is no mach for a car with 4 wheels when it comes to safety, performance, and efficiency when it comes to driving, as much as you don't like it.

  • > Lol go back to watching your animate, 3 wheels is no mach

    > for a car with 4 wheels when it comes to safety, performance,

    > and efficiency when it comes to driving, as much as you

    > don't like it.

You failed dynamics. Or would have, if you ever took the course.

That's OK, because most car "designers" have too, which is why 90% of the vehicles on the road would have less drag being driven backwards than forwards.

  • How many of the 90% would be dead by now on their 3 wheelers? If it's true what you say and it would produce less drag then it is more energy efficient. It's still very very significantly less safe, and it's performance is significantly worse. Even if it had 4 wheels but the ones that turn were in the back would it be more safe or less safe? Why do you think 99% of cars are made the other way? Every car maker failed dynamics? I think your missing something here.

  • > How many of the 90% would be dead by now on their 3 wheelers?

Um, none? I give up. Is this a riddle?

If you want a safe car, drive 30 MPH instead. That would reduce traffic fatalities in car collisions to near 0.

Or you can drive a car that is 50 by 50 feet, and all crumple zones, that gets 0.15 miles to the gallon and has a usable compartment space of 100 cubic feet.

Since safety is your over-riding concern and all.

A 3 wheeled vehicle is no less or more safe than a 30 wheeled one.

  • Why would I want to drive 30mph? I can drive faster than that. My argument is not that 4 wheeled cars are super safe or absolutley safe. My argument is that 4 wheeled cars are significantly safer than 3 wheeled cars, and is a better choice. The rest of your comment is just fantasy world.

  • > Why would I want to drive 30mph?

I thought you were a total painty- waist about safety?

The reason a light vehicle is "unsafe" is because idiots drive around tanks, which are also unsafe, and if you happen to be hit by one in a light car, you're dead.

It's heavy pieces of shit vehicles that made the roads unsafe. In a crash with a stationary object, a heavy vehicle is a lot less safe to be in than a lighter one.

  • How about you stick to the argument of whether a 4 wheeled car is safer than 3 wheeled. Your changing the subject to a completely different topic.

  • Where is this "4 wheeled cars are safer than 3 wheeled" notion coming from? Road and Track has studied this, and found that tapole-configuration (two wheels forward) trikes are just as safe as four wheelers. And they have a faster yaw response time, too.

  • Where is the "4 wheeled cars r safer than 3 wheeled" notion coming from? Are u kidding me? Where is that notion coming from? How about science? Asking the most dumbest questions ever. It doesn't get more obvious than this. Think how stable is a 3 wheeled car on the road vs 4 wheeled. 4 wheeled car touches road in 4 different spots. Therefore it has beter friction with the road and is more stable. EVERYONE READING, IN THE SEARCH FIELD TYPE IN "MR BEAN IN GARAGE" AND U WILL C HOW SAFE 3 WHEELS R.

  • Sorry, physics doesn't work that way. First off, what determines rollover resistance is center of gravity and wheelbase, not friction (actually traction). Second, traction doesn't increase with the number of wheels - you get a larger contact but less force per unit area. Third, as mentioned, *Road and Track has studied this*.

You can make an unstable three wheeler. You can also make an unstable 4 wheeler (see ATVs). What matters is center of gravity and front track width, not wheel count.

  • Oh, and for your further reading: go to google, type in "1982 road and track three wheel", and hit "I'm feeling lucky". They have an excerpt from the Road and Track article.

  • If efficiency is your issue with 3-wheeled vehicles, you do have a valid point. However while 3-wheel design has an increased front profile, it also removes the contact drag from a fourth non-drive wheel.

Efficiency balance is tipped in the favor of 3 wheeled design for the Aptera's purposes, as it allows for the aerodynamically ideal teardrop shape of the vehicle.

99% of cars are made the way they are because of 2 reasons: "that's just how cars are made" and innovation costs money.

    I passed.

  • looks like a helicopter

  • Decent car.. but

I would like to see crash tests on this Sperm Vehicle

  • If they come out before venture one get's there act together then I'll probably buy one.

  • im going to try to Drift this Shit

  • I am sure this electric car is going to be great on snow.

  • I WANT ONE!

  • I wonder how this car handles in the snow?

  • I wonder who would drive this car in the snow, LOL! Should put skis on the front and a track on the back, and have a enclosed snowmobile - awesome!

  • you should give it away on wheel of fortune to make it mainstream!

  • excellent markinting tactic

  • The Fed should divert part of those Detroit big 3 bailout funds into this company to prompt it production line so the cost could be drop based on mass productions roll out.

  • Nice job!!

    GREETINGS...

  • Electric Generator, instead of gas-motor generator on your hibrid, along with a few roof solar panels to feed the E-gen (see Nisson "Based" on KanDoo Be-Bop at Paris auto show), & you have a real FUEL-LESS infinite range (or Fuel-Free as Nisson has it) people transport! If you don't like Solar-Cell limits - use outside charging (now ANY plug-in for 12v system!), & get your 300mi WITHOUT ANY GAS! Take the last step dummies & YOU could be FIRST in REAL TRANSPORT REVOLUTION!

  • not a production vehicle available in the US

  • he said its very roomy inside but what about the trunk he didnt mention it, is there even a trunk lol.

  • Yes there is, a sideways opening hatchback, check out the great pics on Aptera's Flickr page

  • in addition to a small seat in back that can fit an infant's car seat. If this back seat is removed, it converts into cargo space large enough to fit, according to the company, either 15 bags of groceries or two full-sized golf bags.
