Very reminiscent of the Unforgettable Fire days this - bassline perhaps a little too close to Bad in some ways. Great song, but sounds too much like the U2 of old, which is perhaps why it was cut. I doubt it will be on the new album.

That's back when they were good, since AB they haven't had an album with songs as good as Bad, that was an amazing song live. Since Achtung Baby they have been falling off this is actually pretty good by comparison I think...

Totally agree! "Mercy" is like "Bad" ...very anthemic and hopeful! U2 and Oasis both have some amazing B-sides that could be an A-side...how many more great songs like this do they have left in them? Hopefully, they can squeeze hit after hit...

Mercy was cut from the album, but they may decide to finish it at some point and there's a chance (though slim) that it may find it's way on to the next album. The three you mention were officially released as part of the 'unreleased and rare' part of the Complete U2, but Mercy wasn't- it has never been intentionally released by the band.

@buzzkill27 You never know. I recall them saying that the melody for City of Blinding Lights was originally conceived around the time of Pop but was never finished. Smile is good, Flower Child and Love You Like Mad though in my mind were a bit cliche and not up to normal standard of U2. They sounded unfinished to me. I do love Mercy though :)

Great, great song. I hope it's on the next album too. It really grows on you after you listen to it several times. Since they wrote this around the same time as Miracle Drug, it doesn't surprise me that there might be some similarity. I think some songs are born from bits and pieces of others...a note here or a chord progression there. Can't wait for the next album.
