Very reminiscent of the Unforgettable Fire days this - bassline perhaps a little too close to Bad in some ways. Great song, but sounds too much like the U2 of old, which is perhaps why it was cut. I doubt it will be on the new album.
That's back when they were good, since AB they haven't had an album with songs as good as Bad, that was an amazing song live. Since Achtung Baby they have been falling off this is actually pretty good by comparison I think...
Totally agree! "Mercy" is like "Bad" ...very anthemic and hopeful! U2 and Oasis both have some amazing B-sides that could be an A-side...how many more great songs like this do they have left in them? Hopefully, they can squeeze hit after hit...
Mercy was cut from the album, but they may decide to finish it at some point and there's a chance (though slim) that it may find it's way on to the next album. The three you mention were officially released as part of the 'unreleased and rare' part of the Complete U2, but Mercy wasn't- it has never been intentionally released by the band.
@buzzkill27 You never know. I recall them saying that the melody for City of Blinding Lights was originally conceived around the time of Pop but was never finished. Smile is good, Flower Child and Love You Like Mad though in my mind were a bit cliche and not up to normal standard of U2. They sounded unfinished to me. I do love Mercy though :)
"A Celebration" was the 'B' side of "Trash trampoline and the Party Girl" which was a single released on vinyl between "War" and "October." I don't know about the other song.
i just want to say, that , this song, its the best song i heard from this guys, U2 should put this on the next album, because its so beautifull and it touch every single emotion on the haert and the brain, awesome
Excellent song and even better video. I love the non concert clips especially the one with the Pope at 4:02. He finally took his shades off. I can't wait to here this live, album in '08 tour in '09. Great video my friend!
Great, great song. I hope it's on the next album too. It really grows on you after you listen to it several times. Since they wrote this around the same time as Miracle Drug, it doesn't surprise me that there might be some similarity. I think some songs are born from bits and pieces of others...a note here or a chord progression there. Can't wait for the next album.
I love the song and at the same time part of this song seems to be be very close to "Miracle Drug". Start at 3:43 of Mercy and about 1:56 of Miracle Drug and tell me what you think.
If only that were true. This needs to be released. They should release a rarities album with A Celebration and all the other tracks they left off their albums.
it was 'leaked' about two years ago- has not been officially released- U2 have been quoted as saying there may be a reworked version of it on their next album. you're welcome- what do you think?
i used to like U2 but now i dont even think that they know what COEXIST means.
Just think you cant believe that stupidity

There are a few songs that were cut from albums that made it on later ones e.g. If God Would Send His Angels.

I plan on getting a mastered version someday from the $100 boxset of HTDAAB that U2 will release in 15 years or so :)

This song is too good to be a b-side, if it is on their next album, I kinda wish I hadn't heard it until they had the final version.
