all in all why is this game so insanely difficult? surely the programmers cannot have purposefuly made it that that way? is it down to lack of testing the game once it had been programmed?
@wozyh They made it super hard so that people would keep pumping quarters into the machine as a get rich quick scheme. It backfired and they pulled the GIII arcade cabinets out of the arcades, so they're quite the treat to find nowadays.
So when you get hit with the final boss's fireball, it will always send you to the Gradius stage first and then the Life Force/Salamander stage second? Or is it just random which stage it sends you to?
@Seahawk0027 Interesting. I tried this too and was sent to the evil Salamander stage...not sure which fireball i got hit by tho...i'll take your word for it! lol
While it is true you get so few points, Japanese players have actually exploited that loop to get ridiculous scores without having to face the punishing high loops.
In fact, I recall that Gamest Magazine DQ'd a lot of insanely high scores because of this. You can make about 380,000 points in an hour doing Gradius, almost doubling your score.
The PS2 and PSP ports made it so you could only visit the secret levels once.
@CobaltiSickle The SNES version is different from the arcade version (which appears on the PS2 in the game "bundle" Gradius III & IV). The version you are seeing in this video I believe is from the PS2 arcade version. Not sure what happens if you are hit by the final boss' fireball in the SNES version...but I would suspect instant death would occur. lol
The reason is that the video encoder tends to mask out tiny single dots of color on every other frame.
This isn't a problem when the video runs at 60fps, but Youtube likes to pull the framerate down to 30 or lower by deleting frames, creating the blink effect.
You can see this effect on others things in my other videos, various stars and lights blink as they move.
I remember running Gradius once and then, the second time through, the projectile outright killed me instead of sending me back.
(This was on the JP version via MAME, I never tried it in the PS2 version...)

Stage 4 also has a bonus stage, on the Super NES version.

I think these 'bonus' stages are actually punishment for getting hit by Bacterion's attack.

It's better than dying, you at least have a chance to survive and not lose a life.

I can't tell you how many stupid deaths those jumpy 360° bullet-spamming hellspawn have caused me.

I believe the top always sends you to Salamander, the bottom sends you to Gradius, and the middle one is random.

@3up3up3up I have this game on my Super Nintendo, do both these levels appear, in the same way?

@farmerjohn2689 Hmm. Two possiblities. I will either have fun on bonus levels or be a nominee for a RageToon.

Don't do it, you'll die. The SNES version has its own bonus stages hidden in stage 2, 3, 5, and 7.

The Golem's eye comes out higher than it is in Salamander.
Also the song is called Poison of Snak

@shalpp I thought the Salamander Stage 1 theme was called "Power of Anger".

It is
I'm talking about the boss theme though
shalpp 1 year ago
@shalpp Sorry about that. I'm not sure about the name of the boss theme.... I think you're right (or at least you're close)

Why does Golem's eye siezureifically flash? Other than that, thanks for the video, I've always wanted to see the Secret Stages in High Quality.
