put the skin head for and hour or two on the sun, then put then on a shadow spot for the skin head to cool down, then moistere them with some skin lotion, and tune them up, it should improve the skin, and the ringing when your playing live it won´t even notice, is normal to have a little
The head isn't seated evenly on the shell. I have heard of this problem, though have not experienced it personally on my Luis Conte model congas. I did have this problem on an LP quinto once and the remedy was to remove the head, wet it til semi-soft and re-install it, paying close attention to tightening all the lugs evenly. Another problem could be if the upper rim of the shell is uneven, you could sand it down, but I'd recommend taking it to a shop if you're not an experienced woodworker.
I have to teach a teenager some conga slapping techniques. This will be perfect for him to get started rather than just pounding! It's not just how hard you hit it, iis it?
NOTHING should ever kill your desire to play! Though, I know it's a bummer to buy something you aren't happy with. I own the Luis C. Trio, and replaced all 3 of them with Remo Crmplck Symtry heads. MAJOR difference. On the plus side, the conga sounds like a beauty... the Quinto is OUT OF HAND. Conguero friends who play on "higher" quality drums can't get enough of the quitno. On the down side, the Tumba has MAJOR overtone's, but can be fixed with cheap muting solution on the skin. Hope it helps
I've Meinl Marathon Classic set. They have same "problem" in less extend than yours though. I think all "beginners series" have the same problem let them be LP Aspire,Pearl primero,Mainl headliners or whatever (sub 300-350 euro). If you notice the "pro" series of Meinl has a rubber between the metal base of the tuning lungs and the shell. Perhaps it is for eliminating that overtones. I've played also on LP Patato, LP Galaxy, Pearl Elite and tried Meinl Pro; none excibited such metallic overtones
I have the same drum and the same ring.Even with the head and all the hardware off it is still there when i tap it.A high D like a harmonic. The shell has that resonance and since there are others with the same problem, it must be a design flaw.I'll try to trade them in for a nicer set once I learn how to play better.
There really should be a factory recall of those drums.
@gimmeagig once u learn how to play better and at least practice rudiments an hour a day ur congas will sound better trust me that and consider putting some remo heads ;)
you should check if the shell is even. If its not, bring them back to your dealer and buy more reasonable brand congas.
I personally prefer lp's but they aren't available officially in your country, Germany, Austria may be the nearest to you. Same with toca. Pearls can be bought at
I've heard of that guy and his amazing congas. But it takes quite some time to get them (up to 2 yrs as I've heard) and they're approx 750 usd, right? Plus I dont live in USA, but in the Czech Rep. So if I want to start any time soon, I have to go with some other brand...
I would not recommend a quinto either. If your going to play popular music (salsa) etc then stick to conga/tumba size if you want 3 drums i would say 2 congas and a tumba some also opt for a conga and 2 tumbas. Quinto is another beast and is mostly used in rumbas etc.
What it is dude! That's a shame that this meatl ringing has killed your passion for wanting to learn congas. But I once had a pair of mountain top percussion congas and let me tell you I would have rather played on pots than that crap, but I learned that its not the drum that sucks its just the head that was being used. I recommend that you shop around and try out a differnt head, maybe an Evans synthetic head its kills the drumover tone and is easier to play on than Remo fiberskyn head(Nuskyn)
Well, it sure hasnt killed my passion as a dancer:) I cannot fit Evans due to Traditional Tuning Rim (cuban style). I'll se what I can do, but I'm just sick of finding and trying new "this and that approach". If i was working instead, I could have bought 3 new congas. I either sell it or more likely throw it out of the window. I just hate the fact i spend 300 uds for that crap.
i bought a used pair of lp timbales and had a similar problem. i learned that a lot of the ringing was caused by the acoustics of the room. Ive seen moved over to congas. Love that congas much better. Worst case scenerio replace the drum, dont let your passion die out, i recently joined a salsa band and its well worth the practice and always have someone to teach you new stuff and post on youtube alot
Hello, a friend has a full set of Fiberglass Patato series LP's, He hot glued a few pieces of soft foam inside the shell and controled his overtones that way. I have a set of Toca Custom Deluxe 10,11,11.75,12.5,13 Ive use stock heads, Evans, and Remo heads. I love my Tocas I now use Nuskyns because I gig alot and hate tuning up on stage between songs. The synth heads hold their tuning, and my sound is consistent for the whole gig.
Wow, I've never heard of soft foam inside conga. Where execatly did he glue it? How large were the pieces? I only tried to soak the skin to make it fit better and it improved a sound a little. I'm also giong to try to put bee wax on the edge under the skin as i was recommended. I'll post some clip, thank you for your comment.
I used to have these congas. They suck. I recently bought the LP Classic Congas Natural wood with chrome hardware. 100x better. THe LP congas are about twice as much. If you can afford the LP Classics, get them. The Meinl Luis Conte signature models have a metallic ring to them unless you are Luis Conte.
Can't agree with you more. I'll see what I can buy. We have crazy prizes here. I payed equivalent of 370usd for that crap. I'll travel to germany to check out what they have in thomann store, 'cause here, they sell LP's Giovani Palladium series quinto for 1450 usd (course conversion). I've heard some Meinl pro series and half sounded nice, half was ringing the same way like L. Conte's! Mario
It sound like it's pretty tight, I would back it off 1/4 turn all the way around. I know times are tuff but look in to a 11" Quinto If you like loud slaps, crisp highs and I bet If you tuned down your 11 3/4 conga it would make an excellent 2nd drum and you would have more fun learning two drum rhythms
more than likely it's not the shell something about youre tuning sounds off but it's hard to really tell from a video because of the adiou quality. the factory skins on most mass produced congas are mediocre at best and usually too thin i'm sre a skin replacement with a good quality cow or mule would do wonders for that conga
It's the shell thing i think. I'll up a clip where shell (no skin) exhibiths very simmilar ringing while hit. I'm affraid ringing is in natural frequency spectrum of that particular drum:( I'll try to post some phycical explanation too. thank you for your comment. Mario
Are you playing on carpet? If so try a piece of plywood under. Change rooms too, better yet try outside in the yard. Some times the harmonics of a room will bring out the ring in a drum. Water buffalo and nuskyn heads will have a little ring no matter what.
Yes, I tried all possible rooms, places and surfaces under conga. I've notices that the length of ringing slightly changes with respect to these conditions and weather conditions too. These are buffalo heads for sure. I'll tape one more video with ringing while skin is down... I'm affraid it's the wooden shell problem too.
it's not a tunig problem for sure. I tried that few times. I even soaked the skin a little so it fit the edge perfectly. It rings even with 3.5mm cowhide skin on it.

Take those pieces of junk and donate them to a high school and deduct it from your tax's.
Then buy yourself a set of "REAL DRUMS" made by Matthew Smith ("Ritmo"). He's based in Philly, PA.

I think it's a tuning problem...Try to release completely your skin for about one-two days and then retry to tune it correctly.
My conga is the same of yours and i ear the "ring" only in the "open slap" (probably caused by the armonic of the note).
