The book and the movie had different themes. The book told the story from the idea that maybe he was just stupid or crazy to go on such a journey...or maybe he was truly free.

The movie only showed the side that his journey found happiness.

Well he died alone however, his happiness was shared with all those people he had met on the way.

The book takes a more "societal" aspect letting the reader to decide if he might be somewhat insane or just plain stupid to embark on such an adventure or if he found what he was looking for and discovered true happiness.
